[VC] AMD Radeon HD 9000 Series Launching in October?

What are you talking about? The 4890 and 4870 were AMD's top of the line single GPU's from that generation, the 5770 was a sub $200 budget card, of course the 4890 and 4870 were going to be faster!! And I don't think they were cheaper. The 5770 was released at $160. The 4870 was $299.

By the time 5770 was released both of them were selling below 5770 prices. So you were paying more for less performance.

Why are AMD bothering? A 7970 is fine for 1080p and it's plain as a pikestaff that the next big thing is 4K and even a Titan can only just cope with that.

So your point is to just give Nvidia a monopoly in performance GPU's ? Yeah that's just brilliant ! Just give one manufacturer the entire market will certainly lower prices and accelerate development !

Actually, 1440 is the new 1080

There will be a few more stops until 4k. Like 2k, and 3k.

Until there is sufficient content to consume, and the prices come out of the stratosphere, 4k is a fringe product.

That having been said, a 7970 cant handle even 4 year old games at 60fps with decent AA options enabled.

So yes, there is need of improvements even at 1080.

No, 1440 is not the new 1080, unless you mean for the enthusiasts. It's not going mainstream for quite some time considering your options are $700+ or eBay.

of course for the enthusiets.

What board do you think you are on?

1080 panels were much more than that when they started out.

you can get korean 1440 panels for under $300

Remind me, how much faster is the 780 than the 7970? Not a lot faster, is it? And the 7970 is much cheaper and more than fast enough for 1080p.

Not for 120/144hz.

I wouldn't care if it's 300 bucks and came with 10 free games, until they fix their horrible driver situation they shouldn't even bother.

Monoprice and microcenter sell great 1440p screens for under $400. Even overlord computer sells screens for around $500 which can be OC'ed to 120hz.i definitely think 1440p is the new 1080p

Its fast now, until technology improves which it undoubtedly will and is.

I hope the comparison of the 79790 to the 780 was a joke because there is a pretty big difference just gaming wise. Good enough is barely cutting it 2 years later when in many games your competition is blowing away your best offering by 20-25FPS. If you're trying to compare price points than the 770 still tops the 7970 pretty convincingly.

If/when the HD 9000 series comes out, I'd like [H] to do a comparison test between the HD 9750/9770 or something versus the very-resilient Radeon Pro 9700. :p

Battlefield 4, Highest playable resolution.

Radeon 9700 Pro:

640x480 - noAA - 2xAF. Min: 23fps Max: 37fps AVG: 29fps

DX7 mode.

(But i would love to see a "9700 Pro 2013 edition". ;) )

Ya know, shit I might still have mine lying around somewhere. I'd totally send it to [H] for this!

Somebody else will have to supply the Pentium 4 2.4Ghz Northwood core OC'd to 3.2GHz and Asus P4P800 Deluxe though =P

Just so happens I have these locked away in a heart shaped box.

I held off on spending too much money on a GPU for my build in progress just in case I had to drop a couple hundred on their new cards... Plus Nvidia said they arent releasing any new cards for the rest of the year so no need to wait on them

Anyone have any reports on how much performance can be expected from these cards from reputable sources??

I still have a Radeon 9800 laying around. Maybe I can crossfire them for uber performance?

i had to guess i would say 20% over the 7970. i wouldnt be surprised if it was lower, there isnt a die shrink.

Leaks should be coming in the next few weeks. Looks like the new cards will have a new and improved cooling solution.

Be interesting to see if AMD can finally launch a card with a reference cooler that's quiet. Ever since the x1800xt in 2005 they've just been annoying.

Sounds like this card may be a perfect upgrade for my 2 x 6950's at 2GB each. One card with less power draw and being faster sounds good to me. (I am not that concerned about power draw now but less still is better.)

They just did, the official 7990 has a great cooler on it. Lets hope it makes its way onto these new cards.

That's bull shit, they promised that in the 7xxx series and it never materialized.

I'm confused by this, do you mean specifically Eyefinity? Or just extended desktop functionality? Because I know it can do the latter, but I've never tried the former.

As long as the resolution and refresh match eyefinity works fine. It's why I'm selling my 690 and bought a 7970 to tide me over. I have 3 30" monitors that were all bought over a 5 year period. Nvidia surround blows compared to eyefinity.

How bout PLP triple screen gaming support for once ? Been dying for a gaming card to support the classic setup of 20" + 30" + 20" in games.

Well that's a matter of opinion, its good that its quiet and cools the card, on the negative side just about all the heat is dumped into the case. If NVidia can some out with a cooler like what's on titan or 780 that is quiet and expels the air outside the case I don't see why amd can't.

There were reports of the 7990 cooler warping when run in "quadfire" and the gpu's overheating.

With amd its generally a trade-off, a quiet cooler that doesn't exhaust hot air, or a louder cooler that does. The best of both worlds would be nice.

Maybe they can develop a cooler similar to the "IceQ" blower, HIS uses.

I hope they get their frame metering driver out in front of this and that it has some kind of hardware level solution as well much like the Kepler. I also sincerely hope we are looking at a dead heat between this thing and a 780, should make for some proper price competition (Nvidia have just been out of control on the pricing front with the 780 and Titan).

Agreed on all fronts :)

Just gonna drop this here, from boom @ semiaccurate forums.

Crystal System family, follows the current Solar System family of mobile GPUs.
Beema and Mullins are based on Jaguar
Volcanic Islands is the code name for the upcoming family of discrete gpus. The timing of the talk points strongly to the rumored October launch to coincide with Battlefield 4's release.

This is true, I have no problem hooking up a 23", 30", and 22" and running eyefinity. The resolution will be the lowest common denominator, but it will work.

For single cards I think they are as good as Nvidia now AFAIK. Did you mean crossfire?

Anyways in general I could believe AMD has new cards soon, they seem like in trouble to me with their current lineup (nothing some price cuts cant fix of course)

single amd radeon, tends to be better than Nvidia in framesync.
crossfire have some work to do and the new tech is likely to help along the way there.
