The sad part about this story? The government wastes so much money that this isn't even shocking anymore. :(

State Department officials spent $630,000 to get more Facebook "likes," prompting employees to complain to a government watchdog that the bureau was "buying fans" in social media, the agency's inspector general says. The department's Bureau of International Information Programs spent the money to increase its "likes" count between 2011 and March 2013.

What this does show is that the IG system works when people actually report the crap they see. One big problem though is that the IGs have had their budgets cut pretty bad too while Congress keeps tasking them with more and more items, which does distract their attention from investigative work like this.

Of course now there will be at least $6M spent by congress investigating Government use of facebook, it always seems to work that way.

With our State Dept, it we would be better off if we defunded it and turned out the lights.

If someone there would ever take responsibility for their screw ups and resign, those investigations wouldn't be necessary.

Unfortunately that's not the way of the world anymore, it's always blame someone else, no one wants to take responsibility for their actions and honestly who could blame them, look at the witch hunt for Paula Deen after telling the truth.
Absolutely hate the direction this country is heading in.

Paula Deen said the truth about what?

Wow. That's amazing. I've given the Fed more than that and I don't like them any better.

I think they wasted their money.

Paula Deen? That was quite a left turn you made there. Paula Deen deserves everything that's happening to her.

I can see how it works.

Paying facebook to do advertisement lets you access a lot of data that facebook hides from users. $600K is cheap compared to spending the time to get court orders subpoenas for user data. A $1000 "Campaign" can let you see what users click on your advertisement with "Keywords" so you can bearing on what people you're look for.

And besides you can't hide "Goverment Spying Program" under Toilet seat covers for $100 a piece. People will catch on. So you put the billing under something so stupid like Facebook and nobody will ever know. Facebook won't tell you how much they spent. They keep how much people spend as hidden as possible.

Paula Deen said the truth about what?

As a 65+ year old white lady from the south, she admitted using the N-word before.
Shocking! She was asked in an interview after some disgruntled former employee(s) had claimed she was a racist. For perspective, she grew up in a time when the south still segregated schools. Cue ex post facto political correctness uproar.

Then she tried to apologize, but ended up being truthful again and getting into even more trouble by Chris Rocking the issue. She apologized by basically saying she never would've referred to any of the people she'd been accused of calling N-words that way, because they were upstanding black professionals that had nothing in common with N-words. Thereby admitting she believes some black people are N-words, and that she is least a casual racist.

Product of a different culture, truly. And that's a good thing. It means we as a society have changed. I do think the judgement and backlash has been too harsh, someone from that pervasively racist background may never be able to entirely let go of their ingrained cultural perspective, the best you can hope for is that they learn and follow societal rules about expressing it (until they eventually die off and allow for genuine progress).

And yet we don't see any uproar over blacks being prejudice against other blacks based on darkness of skin. Gotta love those double standards.

I've had black friends who said they hate "N-words" (not talking about the word itself). Kinda says something doesn't it?

Actually the law suit filed against her is a 3rd party witness to the way her and her brother ran their businesses, pretty hard to sue over the useage of words in this case.

The only thing she said that was the truth is that shes a diabetic, she didnt even want to call her own cooking unhealthy, well grossly unhealthy, until it was made public by her own family.

Plus ive been to her resteraunt, wasnt worth the wait, especially for her butter tray with a pinch of mashed potatoes.

Her punishment isnt too harsh for someone to have a blind eye on how her own flesh and blood treats there employees like crap and is probably more racist then her yet people flock to her aid. People are so stupid sometimes not to mention his restaurant is horrible been there and the food was crap.

Back to the state dept yea they got hosed should have had the chinese hackers on there side to just boost the Like totals would have cost a lot less lol

What's really offensive is that people like you are far more offended by a word than you are by real crimes with real victims:

Per Department of Justice violent crime statistics 2010:

Black males are 21 times more likely to commit a serious assault or murder someone of another race the being assaulted or murdered by someone of a different race.

Are facts racist? I suspect that to you, they are.
