Hi all. I have a dedicated monitor (DELL U2913WM) for watching movies. It's fantastic. I have it in a small dedicated desk. I'm looking for good sound quality speakers and while browsing for options I came to the idea of using a sound bar. I'm not talking about the crappy $35 sound bar but a good and very small sound bar that could simulate 5.1 or at least have 3D surround sound. I don't know if you have any suggestion? Also I was thinking about getting something along the line of an iPod speaker (that is one body -not separated- with two speakers on each side) and placing it at the center of the monitor. There is always the possibility of the 2.1 conventional speakers solution. The only requirement is that all the speakers had to be on the desk, I can't have satellite speakers on my back. Much appreciate your suggestions! Thank you!!

dont get a sound bar.

a 2ch setup will provide more directional cues because the speakers will be further apart.

what are your sources and budget?

Source will be the soundcard of my PC and $, being that my main speakers are the Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 and don't want to spend a lot again, is like $200 max. I don't need/want big sound, just quality sound. Thanks!

Check your local craigslist for good used gear.

Easiest thing to do would be to get some good speakers and a t-amp. Set this combo up properly and it will put out some nice 3D sound. I use stereo and it sounds just fine to my sides and rear.
