Gigabyte Z77X-UP5-TH LGA 1155 Motherboard Review - Gigabyte’s Z77X-UP5-TH motherboard is chock full of features that allow all kinds of connectivity; dual Thunderbolt support, Bluetooth 4.0, a robust WiFi technology, and nine different SATA connection points. We put it through our usual paces and see how fast and stable it is as well as how it performs when overclocking.

Hehe, yeah, we will have a few more Z87 reviews. Guess I have typed "Z87" enough times in the past couple of months that it is all my fingers know how to type any more.

At least Gigabyte has updated the BIOS and software for the new Z87 boards (about time)! Great review and I'm really looking forward to see a review of a new Z87 Gigabyte board!

Working with the UD5H right now. :)

The GSATA plug is a ASMedia 1061 based port. I'm not sure what the slider is.

Hmm, not to step on any toes, but curiosity lead me to find GSATA and the eSATA plug being controlled by the Marvell 88SE9172 (supporting RAID 0 and RAID 1 configs).

As for the slider, it allows you to switch between the 2 BIOS chips (main and backup).

One thing I miss from these reviews is the customer support aspect, maybe only when a board is faulty does it receive this treatment. I have this board, had to warranty it w/ gigabyte due to faulty bios. While everything went oddly smoothly (they pre-shipped replacement, etc). Gigabytes support and warranty system is a joke and a nightmare. There are so many areas during the process where my return could and should have gone off the tracks. I even took screen shots of one of Gigabytes warranty forms that looks like it was written in Chinese by a 2nd grader, then translated into English by a third grader for the sole purpose of sending it in to [H] a month ago but decided to let it slide. It was comical how bad it was.

I truly feel that I just got unbelievably lucky on my return, and not as the result of an efficient, customer-centric support product and process.

For this reason alone, I would find it hard to put my name and reputation recommending gigabyte to anyone.

That said, I dont game but am a power user otherwise (programming/multiple VM's running/ light vid encoding), and the feature set of this board kicks ass for my VirtuMVP triple monitor / usb3 / thunderbolt / tpm needs.
My one complaint is that this board lacks enough usb2 headers. my cosmos 2 has 4 front usb2 ports which eats up what this board has, I still needed to plug in my wireless nic and my water cooler to usb headers.
Board could have used 2-3 more internal usb2 headers (although not at the cost of the great usb3 options it offers or any of its other port offerings)

No your right, wrong board. I've seen so many lately that they all blur together.

Btw, I'd like to de-lurk for a moment and say thanks for the review and all your many years of awesomeness! I always regard the [H]staff opinions in high esteem. :D

Also to note, this motherboard has been ordered, shipped, and arriving tomorrow. I'm stoked! I placed the order well before your review, but at least you were mostly polite when it came to its flaws :p. I'm usually an Asus fanboy, but my options were somewhat limited this time around since I'm building a hackintosh and wanting a fully supported OS X. I'd recommend this mobo for that reason alone. Cheers!
