i don't want to use it, IM NOT GOING TO USE IT so please stop shoving it down my throat whoever approved the decision to have this show up while i'm reading a random thread

From Kyle - Install the NewZon extension and the suggested redirects will not be shown. Pretty simple answer to your issue since it is so bothersome. Or you could even simply install the Opt Out extension for Chrome or this downloadable one for FireFox.

this is fine as a april fools joke but not now :(

i can ignore the lil green icons but this is just silly!

....but you can just hit the X..... yes but please just kill it off its annoying to see in the first place

There's also the attempted redirecting when you click on Newegg links.

Ironically when I opened up this thread I was greeted by that same pop-over window. Well played Hardforums. :p

Kyle and MajorDomo blatently told someone in another thread to just not come to [H] if it was a problem.

Well played.

I agree its annoying. If I'm not on chrome, or logged on from another ip, I get it. If people had to pay to use hardforum, I am guessing there would be many less members.

i'll guess its a revenue thing and leave it at that since i know a certain admin that doesn't like my opinions

at least the major seems alright so i'll leave it to whoevers in charge :)

It is annoying, but this forum costs money and the alternative could be having an Cheetos (etc. al) advertisement pop up there like a lot of places have done. At least it allows you to instantly close it and not have to stare at it for 15 seconds.

Also, installing NewZon will remove all that as well....

I'm not real sure why everyone is getting so tore up about this. Just install the damn extension. It's pretty handy and it helps support my interwebs home.

I just received the NewZon add as well, within chrome, been using NewZon pre-release.

Chrome Ver. : 28.0.1500.3 dev-m
NewZon Version: 0.73.2

Just saw it about 20 seconds ago going to a Want to Buy thread

The Firefox opt-out add-on was taken down by Mozilla telling us: "Please don't send example add-ons to Mozilla." We are trying to get it re-listed now.

In the meantime, you can download it here: http://s3.amazonaws.com/kbnetworkz/n-opt-out.xpi

Download it, then drag it into your Firefox window to prompt for install.

If you have the opt-out or NewZon installed and enabled and still saw the ad please PM so we can go through all the details and figure out what the problem is.

There is a chance that if you have had your browser open for over 7 days you could have seen the ad again. Let me know if that is the case as well.

Thank you for the opt out add on. I just came here because that popup was finally pushing me over the edge. This is one of the few sites that I have adblock turned off, but ads that popup are just beyond my tolerance.

As for the comments of "Just install it", uh no. I don't just install applications that I have no idea who makes them or for what purpose. I run extremely few addons in FF/Chrome and basically all of them are for blocking tracking/cookies/scripts etc. I prefer having the choice to support the sites like this that I frequent.

The extension was developed by a sister-company to HardOCP that I am half-owner in. It is BD Industries, LLC. So it is fully endorsed by me. We developed it specifically for HardForum.com.

The opt-out does a ping to our server when you open your browser, we record your IP and make sure that IP no longer gets any NewZon ads or marketing pop-overs.

That makes it quite a bit different..had I known that....A forum announcement would of been nice and kept me from being extremely leery of it. With that information I will drop the opt out and actually look at it. I shop both Amazon and newegg quite a bit so it is something that is useful. I just needed to know who was behind it. One question though, Does it give this site any benefit for shopping purchases? Or do I still need to use the links you guys provide?

NewEgg killed off their [H] commissioned link program basically....without any advance notice or warning given to [H], during the busiest shopping time of the year (Black Friday last year). Openly stating they felt getting new customers was more important to them than keeping older clients with accounts of 10s of thousands of dollars of purchases.

NewZon automatically provides a [H] link commission when you click on it's green button on a NewEgg item page.

Tried it out, my skepticism was misplaced. Very nice add on, used it to purchase a new hard drive last night and have done quite a bit of price comparison with it. I like the fact that it shows Prime prices for those of us who are Amazon Prime members.

Kyle is there an option to get the newzon buttons to show but no auto redirect from newegg links?

I think that going out of your way (and making us go out of our way) to punish some particular company reflects poorly on [H]. I don't see sufficient reason for this, and even if there was, I still wouldn't want to get hijacked into it. I didn't publish inflammatory things about my business partners. I've never had a bad experience with newegg and have no reason to suspect a conspiracy. But I have seen a number of inflamed, personalized incidents over the years at [H] which were all unnecessary.

I'm tired of seeing this newzon crap. I don't want to be roped into a personal gripe that has nothing to do with me. I've been a reader for upwards of 10 years, I've cooperated as best i can with using the buying links and ad blocking but.... jeez gimme a break.

And... really?

Kyle and MajorDomo blatently told someone in another thread to just not come to [H] if it was a problem.

I'm particularly sick of it in the Hot Deals section. Make all the excuses you want, but if someone posts a hot deal on Newegg, and by default I'm re-directed to Amazon where that deal is not available(happened multiple times now), you are crippling the point of that subforum.

However, when Kyle's response is "it'll all go away if you just install our personal add-on", I don't expect my comment to hold much weight. Nevertheless, register another long-time user that is fed up.

Both the Opt-out extension and the NewZon extension itself disable the ad on [H] by making a quick asynchronous ping to the NewZon servers when your browser is opened. The only possible way that the ad could appear if you have either of these extensions installed is if somehow your IP address changed in the middle of your browser session; perhaps if you are going through a proxy like Tor, or if your browser is opened for a long period of time and your address dynamically changed from your service provider.

NewZon has strong privacy controls and is only authorized to interact with newegg.com and not hardforum.com or any other website, nor does it have the ability to see your URL or tab information. So annoyingly we can't simply check from the extension if you are actually on hardforum.com and take the appropriate action, the pinging system based on IP address is the best system we have come up with.

The ping from the Opt-out and NewZon also disable every other related service on [H] including the button next to Newegg links and the intermediate redirect page.

Hope this helps and sorry for the inconvenience.

I think its great

use neweggs servers/bandwidth to compare products, then poke them in the eye with a sharp stick

You ever hear anything Kyle? I hope they are pissed.

Can't find a link to that, where did Newegg openly state that?

Changing Newegg links to go to Amazon via click.hardforum.com instead is totally meh. If I knew that it would take me to Amazon I wouldn't click it. It's deceptive.

install newzon or the opt-out and newegg links will take you to newegg.

I'm running Safari on MAC OS X. Should I be seeing the popup? I didn't even know there was one.

I shouldn't have to install some 3rd party app just to have internet links to go where they say they are going to.

If you look at the Associates Program Linking Requirements from Amazon there's a phrase in there that reads: "In addition, you must not use a link shortening service in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site." It's pretty obvious that internally redirecting a Newegg link to Amazon does make it unclear that the link is going to Amazon.

Yeah hey if amazon's rules don't allow you to jack with their link I think we've got antitrust issues

Last I knew it redirected to a [H] site that plainly states that is taking you to the amazon alternative, or click this link and it takes you to newegg, however this may have changed since i first installed the addon.

How is what we are doing deceptive exactly? I think we are very clear on what choice is being given. Please explain the deceit.

What we are doing and you are describing are two totally different things.

Kyle, if I click on a cnn.com link I don't expect to end up at foxnews.com, that should really be obvious. Unless people are intricately familiar with the whole [H] vs. Newegg feud, and my guess is that most everyone is not, they expect to end up at Newegg if they click a Newegg link, and not be redirected to Amazon.

Requiring a 3rd party plug-in to actually go where the link says it's going is not the solution at all and goes against how the Internet has been operating since its inception.

It's not clear to the user that if they click a Newegg link that they have zero chance to end up at Newegg and that they will end up at Amazon instead. That's the deception.

EDIT: BTW, it seems like you now changed it to show a screen that says "Amazon keeps this forum free, Newegg does not" yadda yadda yadda. That note did not show up the first time I clicked a Newegg link. Instead it just took me straight to Amazon. If this page that gives users a choice where to go is here to stay then I think the issue is resolved. My objection was to be sent to Amazon without having a choice in the matter.

Like the edit.....you sir have a reading problem is the simple answer. That screen has not changed for months. Thank you.

Just pointing out your accusations were not correct.
