Monoprice 30" IPS Pro Monitor

No problem, guys, thanks for the kind words.

I went ahead and ordered the Dell U3014. I was planning on just waiting for that monitor to come out (I much prefer LED backlit panels personally) but for $700 I figured I could get a great product for half the price as the big brands. I definitely would have kept the Monoprice if it didn't have the screen uniformity issues. Everything else about this monitor is fantastic and a real bargain for the money. Not a single dead pixel!

The great part about Monoprice is they immediately recognized the defects from the pics I sent them and sent me a UPS label today for the return. They offered to cross-ship a replacement but I declined since the Dell U3014 came available for order in the meantime. Since Monoprice customer service is so good, I would not hesitate recommending this monitor to others to try. I can only imagine how screwed I would be had I ordered a monitor from Korea via eBay and gotten a product like this.

That was a great review vid you put up on YT. I hope you do one for the Dell U3014 when you get it. I would love to see it. :)

Thanks, I'll try to put together a vid for the Dell U3014. I haven't been able to find any unboxing videos or anything else, so I'll see if I have time to throw one up.

Well I received my monitor today! I will try and post some photos tomorrow since its late. Initial impressions though..

This uses the same panel as the outgoing Dell 3011

What this means it is a CCFL backlight monitor. It is falsely advertised on monoprices site.

The Anti-Glare coating is reallllllly thick, if you have owned or seen a 3011, 2412, older dells monitors. It is exactly the same as those. It has the annoying shimmering effect on text, especially on white backgrounds.

I also have the same panel uniformity issues as SasquatchTaunt. There are two thick stripes on the right side of my monitor, just shaped a little differently.

Color temp is pretty warm, I have a 27" korean Crossover IPS next to it which is on the cooler side so the contrast is pretty stark.

All that said, for the price with the 10% discount the monitor is actually pretty damn nice. It is totally huge, way bigger than my Korean 27" IPS. Its about 400$ cheaper than the equivalent Dell.

That being said, despite my disdain for anything Anti-Glare, if they can ship me one with a uniform panel I will probably keep it.

I was all set to order one of these but the 10% off coupon has expired :( Sometimes I really hate being so indecisive.

I've got the more expensive one on the way from monoprice, will report back and let you know if it's the same or it's actually the one pictured on the site.

I got this monitor for my brother, the more expensive one. It is only hooked up to HDMI on his laptop now until I get his system built.

At first it did not scale 1920x1080 correctly and stretched the screen, but using the on screen menu I found you can adjust the aspect ratio. Switching to auto and restarting the monitor it now scales it properly and it is in a letterbox view.

There are also adjustments for RGB and contrast. You can move the brightness with no effect.

So the monitor will scale if set to auto.

So far I see no issues on uniformity or dead pixels but won't know for sure until I get it going native full screen.

I don't think the AG coating is bad and not overpowering. It is personal preference but I am sure someone will not like it. This monitor is a lot easier to look at then a glossy one in a bright room however. Still I await a full native rez test though.

Sounds like mine is the same.

Definitely not LED, and definitely Anti-Glare.

IT's big, and looks pretty good and has surprising build quality.

I seem to have no dead pixels or weird stuff happening.

The OSD brightness control doesn't do anything, I really want a way to control the backlight...

got mine all hooked up with full resolution.

it is beautiful with few issues. great monitor.

when turning on the pc or switching resolutions the monitor doesn't quite keep up, so I miss the boys into screen completely and hear the Windows 7 startup chime before I see the login screen.

otherwise it is great

How do blacks looks on yours?

I've decided to send mine back for a refund. In the meantime I got to take a look at a U3011 and the sRGB emulation mode and loved it, so I picked up an open box one from my local Micro Center.

What rev did you get? I got one for $680 from one of the members today with 719 days left on the warranty.

Mine is REV 05 and looks really bright and shiny in comparison to my 3007WFP-HC and 300WFP. Also, it is quite light for its size but I am quite happy with it.

I do not want to discourage anyone from buying those Korean/Chinese monitors but the quality and warranty is not there. I do amateur cross country and road cycling. There are a lot of guys buying Chinese carbon frames. I bought two myself, they work fine but they are a far cry from what I would call acceptable quality - 1mm too wide or too narrow, sloppy engineering and questionable bonding technology etc.

I am sure those monitors will work and just like my Chinese frames serve its purpose but that is about.

Just an interesting tibit:

Monoprice asked if I could take some pictures of the dead pixel area and irregularities, so I had to unbox the darn thing after I went through so much trouble to pack it up. Anyway, I didn't want to bother with DVI and I sure as HECK wasn't going to hook up a DisplayPort cable considering how much of a pain they are to disconnect from this monitor because of the orientation of the port, so I went with HDMI. I hooked it up to my Asus G75VW, set Windows to output to external monitor only and was ready to make a custom res when I noticed the picture had already synced to the full resolution and the OSD info showed 59Hz. I was utterly shocked, so I pulled up the Nvidia Control Panel to check the resolution. This is what I got:

HDMI%20FUll%20Res.png

So if you manage to get one of these CrystalPro monitors without any defects and are keeping it, a bonus point is that if you have the right hardware, it will support 2560x1600@60Hz over HDMI.

Update I found five bad pixels that are only noticeable on a black screen. They are really hard to see. Uniformity looks good to the eye though so not sure if it is worth returning. Maybe Monoprice can give us a partial credit to keep it...

Mine still seems to have no dead pixels, I really don't want to look too hard though!

Sitting next to the 27" from monoprice makes the AG coating look not so great.

Amazon has a few used -like new U3011 going for under $800 for now, which may be a better bet than the MonoPrice one.

Though given my high standards and skepticism about getting a good one especially if its used, I may get one if only to try it out for a few days. Got to love amazon prime.

Do any of you guys have any sort of lag with this monitor when changing resolutions or any issues with the screen going black once in a while?

I have a Radeon 7770 and combines with this monitor it seems there is quite a bit of "thinking" going on before a proper screen gets displayed. Even when booting I can actually start entering my password before I see the login screen - the screen is still black.

Trying to figure out if this is a video card issue or monitor issue...

Long time lurker.

We just got out first 30" Monitor from Monoprice in and I have to say I'm impressed. The box DOES say LED....but unless they meant they were filling the case with lead...I think that's a fat no.

I posted some pics comparing it to the retina macbook (for clarity) and an Apple 27" Thunderbolt over on Reddit:

Let me know if you all want me to do anything to help test these!

Good post, Contributed.

Jnmunsey, I sometimes get some delay when it's going from one res to another, but it wakes from sleep as quick as a CCFL ought to.

Does the multi-input 30" have a built in scaler? Want to make sure I can hook an X360 into it before I purchase! Thanks

K
