One of these days the whine will be gone, but not today :(

This is more about my frustration than for troubleshooting. I have read a bunch on coil whine over the last little while and know that not much can be done about it. Seems that finding hardware that will play nice together is the answer.

So not long ago, I put together a loop for my system. Everything is running great and it's sooooooo much quieter. Almost too quiet it seems. After doing this I noticed a whine coming from my PSU while folding that I didn't notice before cause of my GPU fan. It was driving me insane as I fold nearly 24/7 with the pc, and it's in my room. Today I got fed up and went out and got a new PSU. A Seasonic X-1050. I know it's overkill but it's something I could keep through a few upgrades, so whatever. I get home, wire it up, and crank up the folding client. Well it seems that the whine has moved from my PSU to my GPU :( My GPU is also making another noise now at full load (not folding, but when gaming and benching) that sounds like someone is holding a piece of paper over a fan just close enough to touch it.

I'm thinking of seeing if Evga will do an RMA on my card in hopes another won't have the same problem but I don't know how likely that is (that they will do the rma as well as getting a replacement with no whine)

Sad panda is sad :(

videos of the sounds, maybe have to turn volume up a bit

Folding squeal

edit:

Well I just submitted an RMA request with Evga stating what I did above and was approved. Time to tear the loop apart so I can put the card back together. Hopefully it will do the same for them as it did for me.

I wish I had room to put a drain in my case without more modding. This is gonna suck lol. Something to think about I guess.

Hope it works out for you with the RMA. My EVGA GTX 260 used to have bad coil whine under load like that. My initial fix was to use headphones, followed up by getting rid of it.

The coils are covered on this card. I saw a thread somewhere where someone took a drill and shattered the bits to expose the coils... But that's not something I would try with a card that is still under warranty lol.

So im at the point where evga is gonna send me a card in the next day or two. When I checked my rma status on the evga site, it says they are sending out a 2678 instead of what I sent them which was a 2672. A ftw for an sc sounds like a good deal to me, even though the waterblock I just bought wont fit cause its a longer pcb. We will see soon

Sweet, my replacement card will be here friday. Got an email with the details from evga and they already registered the new card on my account. The rma page was indeed correct as they are sending me back a 670 FTW card in place of my 670 SC. The good? My card was a poor clocker so this gives me a 2nd chance at the OC lottery. The bad? If the whine is indeed gone with this replacement then I need ti get another waterblock as the sc is a different pcb than the ftw.

Just crissing my fingers that the whine is gone then I will be a very happy man.

Looks like I might have to get a f/s thread going...

Well, the replacement was indeed a FTW card which im very happy about. The card boosts by default to 1202, which is better than my highest stable clock on the SC. It seems to use less powet too cause my load from my the UPS was reporting about 500w but now at load its reading 430w. I've been too busy gaming and folding to overclock it yet. Will get to that this week.

Bad news though, it still whines while folding, but its barely noticeable now so its a large improvement.

Gonna have to buy a new block though cause the FTW is a full pcb card.

Oh well
