I have $1,000 to spend, I have no Apple products at the moment. My first impulse is to get the new 128G Wifi+Cellular iPad. I'll be getting an iPhone 5 in May through my upgrade on Verizon and my work pays for that, so I probably don't want to get a phone.

What would [H] do?

:confused::D

[EDIT] I am specifically looking for Apple Products.

Upgrade my PC...

Quick to be a troll.

I just built a PC. If I wanted to know "What to do with 1k" I would post that in General Mayhem. I specifcally put it here because I'm going to be buying some Apple Products. If you aren't on topic, why bother posting?

Yikes! calm down dude. You obviously know what you want to spend a grand on and you didn't tell us that you already had a desktop pc. Like the saying goes.. post stupid threads, get stupid responses.

If you need no laptop, can't go wrong with the new iPad. Though do you really have to spend the entire 1K (some kind of gift card or something?)?

I'd grab a 32 or 64GB (depending on how much storage you really need).

A better option is grabbing a Macbook Air (check online Apple Refurb. section first, then personally, I'd hit up craigslist as people severely cripple themselves by selling NEW products too low). It's got more uses than a sole iPad for sure. Unless, you really just want a pad. No wrong choices really.

Another worthless response. This is [H], I would assume anyone with any amount of intelligence would understand I posted this in the Apple Products forum and listed a possible Apple Product I'm interested in. Do I need to write a list for you of all my previous purchases so you don't suggest those either? Do I need to guide you to the sticky on the top of this section that says to keep the threads on topic?

Thanks, yes it is an Apple voucher. The Air is an interesting idea and I didn't know they had a refurb selection. I'll take a look, thanks! :)

EXXXXXXXXXXXXACTLY. Hit the NAIL on the HEAD.

And btw, 1K in the Apple world doesn't equate to much. I would save a few more pennies and make a more specific thread.

Depends on what you think your currently need.

you have a desktop PC, so I imagine you are looking at something mobile. If that is the case you just need to figure what you plan to do with your possible purchase.

If it's just for email, web surfing, and messing with a few apps, I'd go with the iPad with 4G/wifi. but if you are going to be in the market to be a little more flexible on the go... I would spring for the MacAir. You can get a refurbished one for under a grand and have a little more flexibility with what you could do from a mobile perspective.... only catch is that the MacAir doesn't have cellular service, so you might not want to go down that road.

I'm assuming a few other things here like you aren't gaming on it heavily and you don't need to be connected 24/7 to Enterprise systems...

If you can, and you have a little money left over, I would get an AppleTV too. This way you can AirPlay your iPad or MacAir to your current HDTV. It's nice for videos, movies, and slideshows.

good luck in your purchase(s)!

Thanks turb0!

There is nothing specific I am looking for, no big needs or wants. I just have 1k to basically for lack of a better term, to blow on Apple gear. I'll check out the refurb, an Apple TV would be cool! Also the Airport Extreme looks cool too. Thanks for the ideas, that is what I was looking for.

:D

I've been eyeing an Apple TV for some time, now. Without knowing anything else, get one? :p

AppleTV3 is a good start for $100. Since you will be getting an iphone 5 soon, the Airplay function is really cool. I use an ATV3 as a music frontend and to watch Netflix. We have a macbook, 2 iphone 5's and an ipad2 as well as a mac mini serving up itunes. Sitting on the couch and wanting to show someone a website or video and doing that via Airplay is pretty cool. Obviously, the more apple products in your ecosystem, the more value you will get out of it, but we love our ATV3.

It's also a cheap (for Apple) gadget to play around with to get your feet wet.

EDIT:
So I would recommend an Apple TV, an ipad and maybe some itunes gift cards to buy some content. If the gift cards are out, maybe a mac mini to use as an itunes server for the AppleTV. That is the one drawback about the ATV3 - it HAS to have an instance of itunes running somewhere to serve it content, and the mini is a nice low powered small footprint way to do that.

Thank you for your time. I've officially wasted another 20 seconds of your day.

This is actually a really good idea outside of the iPad/MBP idea.

AppleTV + MacMini + eventual iPhone equates to a pretty slick home set up. Just leave iTunes running on the Mini, and away you go. Between Airplay,Netflix, and iTunes content I rarely watch TV anymore.

You'd still have a couple hundred left over for some iTunes cards to build up your movie collection on iTunes, or you could put that towards an iPad mini and only pay the difference of something like $100 for a 16gb iPad Mini. This way you get your home entertainment, and OSX machine and an iOS machine.

There's a lot of win there.

That's actually a great idea. I also have the Pioneer vsx-822-k, it supports Airplay so that is a real interesting idea. My PC runs iTunes, but having a dedicated little mac-mini is very interesting. Thanks to both of you!

I think I'm pretty set on this idea, the only difference is I'll let my PC dish out iTunes for now, it's on 24/7 anyway. The only thing I'm going to add to this is the Airport Extreme Base Station, my wifi is on its way out. :D Thanks again!

My next iPad will me a 128 GB cellular model. Not sure when I will buy it as the one I have now is barely a year old. But if I didn't have a tablet at all that is what I would get first.

Just picked up a used Macbook pro for $1K a week ago. Early 2011, with thunderbolt 15" with the anti-glare screen. I think it's great, it was for the Fiance but I thought a great deal at that price.

Any particular reason why you're leaning toward the 128GB model? You're going to be paying a significant premium over the 32GB model just to avoid some occasional content house-cleaning in iTunes.

Yeah, I went the mac mini route because I hate to leave my power hungry gaming pc on 24/7 just to serve iTunes. I have it in the basement connected to a TV when I need to manage it, but it basically runs headless most of the time. Rock solid, silent and a very small footprint.

I came from the first gen Apple TV that had local storage and resisted the "upgrade" to the ATV3 and the need to run itunes all the time, but the added features of 1080p output and Airplay pushed me over the edge to upgrade. It also made me buy more Apple products, so I guess it is a shrewd marketing ploy...

Thanks for the info, good points on the power consumption.

If you have 1K strictly talking apple stuff...

Apple TV 100.00
Iphone 5 200.00 with contract or 4S for cheaper
Older G5 quad core max out ram, video card, hard drive 500.00
Bluetooth Speaker 50.00
Ipad Mini 325.00

I know thats over but still if i was to buy apple stuff right now that would be it.

I would get:
Mac mini i5 (600$) + iPad mini 32GB (430$)

Can't think of anything better. Go mini! ;)

:D

no worries.

I didn't even think about the Airport Extreme! I bought one about 3 months ago to replace a dying Linksys 54g router running DD-wrt. I swear I was messing with that damn Linksys router 2-3 times a week.

bought the Extreme, setup in like 5 minutes.... haven't touched it since and my streaming in the house is flawless! So if you need a decent router that you can set and forget.... I definitely would opt for the Airport Extreme!

The AppleTV is worth it if you really want to stream stuff from an iDevice or newer Mac.

If you can't find anything to blow it on.... let me know, I'll spend it for you! :D

$1,000 in the Apple world gets you three iPad Minis or five iPhones. That's plenty.

OP, I would look at the iPad Mini with LTE. Pay the upfront price and set aside some of the remaining $1000 for the LTE bill. If you like it, continue to pay it; otherwise, turn off the monthly billing and just enjoy the device through wifi.

I know when I want to get an iPad and an iPhone, I get multiples just for the hell of it.

I know, me too. Like when my Verizon contract runs out and I want to get my wife, myself and my two kids new iPhones it works out perfect.

So for those that are interested I went to Apple yesterday. I got 1 iPone5 (Verizon) 32G, my company will pay for half so with Apple care and my car charger it was $250 on the Apple Card. I then got an Apple TV, Airport Extreme, another $300. Then went with the 64G Wifi/Cellular iPad, which took me over a little, but no big deal.

While I was there I was playing with the MacBook Pro and Air. I like them a lot better than my Lenovo, I might have to get that pretty soon too.

Thanks all for the suggestions!
