In retrospect, was the NES really a good system?

BEST GAME EVER
and also the cheapest soccer game ever. My brother had it on his Game Boy, and all he did was activate the Shaolin Soccer speed ball attack and floored his opponents.

I remember when the game 'startropics' had a code in it you needed to enter, but I had thrown away the instruction book, where the code was written, and had to call up a hotline to get the code.. I don't think it was a 900 number, I don't remember. I do remember the guy stalling for time, as if he had never heard this question asked before (probably asked dozens of times) .. he told me to copy the number from the book... well no #%&%.. if I had the book I would not be calling.

I remember when they were giving away super nintendo systems on the family channel after school by calling up a number, when the logo appeared on the TV screen. I could never get it to connect. I must have been around 9 or 10 back then.

What I remember of star tropic, it was a fun game, one of the funner ones on the NES, along with Kid Icarus and the first zelda. Zelda 2 if I used the 'game genie' to give myself the thunder spell to get through the end of the game. TMNT was fun, again with the game genie. Without it many of these games were just unforgivingly difficult... having to start straight from the beginning of the game if you lose all your lives and the like.

AHHH YEAHHH!

World Cup Soccer. I forget the name of the company that made this game, but they also made Dodgeball (starring Kunio, who is also on team Japan in this game!!).

I love how the teams/characters have distinct supers. Brazil/France had some of the best super kicks if I recall correctly.

Such a fun game. Mash AB when the ball is airborne and hope the goalkeeper can't stop it. so good.

Many a memory playing this classic game.

personally i think the nes was a great system. super mario bros. 3 is a prime example. the amazing fast pace gameplay, the beautiful artwork engulf in an 8bit world, the lovable characters, etc.. for its time the system was awesome, to judge it outside of it's time frame is a bit unfair and quite wrong if you ask me.

Startropics! Hell yes! Made my day that you mentioned it. That's what my screen name is from. ZodaX from Startropics! "Better than Zelda!"

I personally think it was a great system at the time. Which is all you can do with any piece of hardware/software. It HAS to be viewed relative to its time otherwise it doesn't really provide anything meaningful. But it pretty much saved gaming after Ataris huge pitfalls and the video game crash of 1983. I'm proud to have been part of the NES history in saving gaming/console gaming. I really got my starts on the Atari 400, but my love of gaming really took off with the NES!

It was great because some of the games were insanely difficult.

I am proud to have grown up with an NES and decent library of difficult games. Today most games you can just select an easy difficulty setting and literally run through the levels.

In retrospect.. I think the NES was a good system for it's time. The Super NES was by far better "for it's time"
