I haven't really heard of this game til now.

Love Studio Ghibli movies and this looks awesome. Will definitely keep an eye on it and see how the reviews are.

Demo is available on PSN . It has two different scenarios...both include a chance to explore the combat system.

XBLA? It says it's a ps3 exclusive on the site.

Watching videos the combat looks interesting, looks like it plays in real time.

Also I have to say the art style really draws me in. Everything is so bright and colorful like a Ghibli cartoon, a nice change of pace where most rpgs these days lean toward more realistic and usually lots of browns/dull colors.

Googling around it seems a few reviews are coming out, so far it got a 10/10 from playstation lifestyle (http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2013/01/04/ni-no-kuni-review-ps3-import/) and a 9.5/10 from Gamemasters UK.

You're correct, its a PS3 exclusive. I'm just so accustomed to typing XBLA after PSN when talking demos.

I'm excited. Being made by Level 5 almost guarantees a long, satisfying ending. It's sad that Professor Layton games have better endings than 90% of games released today.

9.4

Ni No Kuni is the best JRPG I've played in years, and a must-play for an RPG fan with a PlayStation 3.

+Gorgeous, lush graphics
+Wonderful, expertly written and performed soundtrack
+Excellent story that's familiar, yet markedly unique
+Engrossing battle system that takes influence from two great JRPG series
+Requires at least 40 hours to beat, and perhaps twice that to do everything

Can't wait for this (and thanks to the OP, I hadn't heard of this game til I read this thread).

Pre ordered the game at gamestop for the steelcase and also on Amazon for the Griffey familiar (just gonna toss that copy on ebay when I get it and keep the griffey).

Wish I had known about this game much earlier, I woulda so got that Wizard's edition, but it's long sold out and is going for 250+ on ebay.

Was interested before. Finally got around to try the demo last night (had it downloaded since it was on PSN :p) and I'll pick it up next week... I have 15$ rebate from BB that expires the 26 :D

i really want the wizard edition but i didn't hear about it until way after the kickstarter/preorder was done - so totally not paying $250+ for it on the bay

guess i'll have to be happy with my standard edition :)

completely hype for this game though, love all the movies (i have them all) and who doesn't love factor 5 - this is going to be one of those epic games no one really knows about

I'm sure google could answer this -- but if I weren't really into Anime, and wanted to check out this series, where should I start? I'm a huge JRPG fan, but I never really got into Anime. I really enjoyed the cut scenes from the game, and I'm assuming they are from a movie?

I'll be picking it up on release day... been craving a good RPG since finishing Blue Dragon years ago and Final Fantasy jumped the shark.

Err, I think he was referring to Studio Ghibli?

The cutscenes for the game are made by them for Ni No Kuni, it's not taken from a movie or anything.

Studio Gbihli is known for making (usually) great movies, such as Grave of the fireflies (this is one of the saddest movies I've ever watched, even compared to live action movies), Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howls moving castle, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, etc.

Laputa: Castle in The Sky is a good place to start for Ghibli, and for JRPG's, play the Tales series.

So who picked it up? Thoughts so far?

I've played it a few hours and I'm enjoying it. I haven't got that far yet (things are still a little closed off) bu the animation/narration is wonderful.

Drippy is such a fun character, I wish all his lines were voiced, it's nice hearing a Welshman doing a voice.

I'm jealous. It will be awhile before I can even get to it. I’m trying to be good and clear out some of my backlog.

I picked it up on my way to work this morning so I could stare at the steel book case. Its very nice artwork; however, Namco went cheap on the spine of the case...looks like it was typed in word and cut out. I still think it was worth walking in GameStop.

I'm plan on playing it tomorrow since I'm off work.

Got stuck at work and wasn't able to pick it up from the leasing office :(

Played for a few hours tonight. So far, it is ok, but the story hasn't grabbed me at all yet. It is 100% cookie cutter JRPG story up to the point I'm at (not that I wasn't expecting this, but it's not even a particularly good one yet). The game itself is absolutely gorgeous to look at though. The artwork is probably the best I've seen in any game this generation, and the animations make it look like you're watching an anime movie instead of playing a game. Combat is still pretty basic up to where I am, and I must admit that I was disappointed with the two bosses that I fought. Basically, both of them involved running away from the boss the whole time and attacking them once in a blue moon. However, the second one did add in switching familiars in order to soak certain attacks, so perhaps they will continue getting progressively complex.

From what I read combat opens up a LOT later on and has a ton of depth, even post level 30+ you get new strategies and things to learn.

Along the same lines, there was an article a few months back talking about how the game's beginnings were purposely made a specific way to ensure players new to JRPGs weren't turned-off immediately by the complexity typically associated with the genre.

Got the game yesterday and only as a far as the Dark Woods. Love everything about it so far.

I picked it up on release, but am waiting to play until after I have some major surgery done in a few weeks and will be bed bound for a week or so. I am a huge Studio Ghibli fan so am pretty pumped up to play this.

Man.... both gamestops here are sold out. Walmart and kmart didnt get any.... and now amazon is 1-3 week for delivery. Been a while since I couldn't get game on release. :(

Picked this up today, played about 5 hours so far and I'm really enjoying it. It's definitely going to pull me away from completing P4G, I'll be sticking to strictly portable situations for that now.

The graphics/animation/music combo is fantastic and like others have mentioned, I wish there was more voicework done; Drippy is awesome.

I can see many many hours spent on this game... and since I just sprained both ACLs I have some time ha ha. Seriously though, excrutiating pain lol.

Looks so good I love the art style. As far as the background goes. I can't stand the paper look of the characters though. That and I don't see a ten year old boy going on an epic journey, but maybe that's just me....

That's one of things that makes it stand out imo, how many rpgs let you play from a childs perspective?

The story and things built around going on this adventure as a young child set it apart from many rpgs and the charm of the art style lends itself very well from the point of view of a character that's a child rather then an adult that we usually play as.

Yeah it looks cool. I mean I watched some of the videos and it does look interesting, I just can't get around those to points. Maybe when it hits $20.

Eternal Sonata, and most of the Tales RPG's.

I'm pretty sure that is one of the defining characteristics of a JRPG.

I got to play a bit more tonight, and the game is definitely growing on me. However, the boss fights are driving me nuts. Literally every one so far (I want to say I've done 5) has been nothing but me running around in circles as Oliver, casting a few spells here and there, defending when the boss is about to use a special attack, and picking up the hp/mana orbs. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but whenever I try to use my familiars they just get crushed from being in melee range; not to mention they don't really do much damage right now. Doing the bosses my way has meant that I only ever take damage from special moves (reduced damage due to defending), and since you get free mana orbs from Drippy you can just use whatever spell you want without worrying about managing anything.

Man, I got to ding dong well and I must be doing something wrong with combat?

I get absolutely crushed!

The battles seem to all be two enemies vs your one, and they gang bang them so fast I can never cast spells.

They constnatly use power up attacks nad I can't select "defend" quick enough to block them.

This is another peeve of mine, are there not a simple hotkey to put you into defensive posture? Who thought this "menu" system was a good idea? It cuts down on your timing so much, the enemies are so fast it's a huge PITA to cancel your attack, then scroll over with the keypad and select "defend" when it'd be sooooo much more easier/quicker to have a simply button press to do it instead.

I'm lv 4-5 IIRC, I did all the side-quests in Ding Dong city that led up to the Well part and now I'm just getting my ass handed to me and can't figur eout what i'm doing wrong.

The boss fights are definitely a surprise at first. You need to be quick and smart in how you can fight them.

Oliver you would think would be more powerful than the familiars, but he isn't. I'm not a big fan of this element of the game, as I would prefer more emphasis on the main character of the game. It seems strange more is placed on random characters who don't speak or do anything really other than fight.

I have found it is a good idea to level up your familiars with the food/treats you can feed them that power up their attack, defense, accuracy, etc. There are quite a few around early on in the game you pick up from boxes and crates and as rewards. You can also buy them at the shops. Also as soon as you get to Ding Dong Dell get some new gear for your familiars. You want to be close to level 10 to make it easier when you fight the Guardian in the forest.

My only real big gripe with the game so far is how it is almost impossible to avoid battles on the field or in the dungeon type areas. If I don't want to enter battle I shouldn't have to unless it is to progress the story. I like to choose my battles. Eventually you can get faster running and such as an upgrade, but it is still annoying.
