Where are the Superbowl 2013 HDTV deals?

I'm waiting on a sale on Panasonic plasma sets. I want to pick up a 50-ish inch for around $500 if I can score one.

i couldnt wait, and picked up a 50" panasonic st50 from paulstv. It was the best four days of my life until yesterday when my son threw a PS3 controller and cracked the glass. The gas escaped and now i have just my 4.65" samsung galaxy nexus phone for tv duty...

My local Best Buy was running a deal for $1699 on the Panasonic 55" VT50 (TC-P55VT50)

I can't buy a TV right now, but I've had that one in my crosshairs for a bit. I did have to pre-warn the wife, if I catch it much lower than that on Amazon, tax free and with free shipping, I'm likely going to pull the trigger

Check your local Bestbuy's in-store clearance deals. They sometimes have interesting stuff. There's a 50" 720p plasma near me for $350, or a 42" 1080p 120Hz LED Smart TV for $399. I like buying clearance rather than refurbs or open box TV's for the full mfr warranty.

Not sure if that link will work or not, but if it does, just click the Change Store button and put in your zip code. Check all the stores in your area, they will have different items in stock.

Nobody cares about this year's Superbowl since Roger Goodell overreached and tampered with the league's competetiveness tainting the whole season. This season will be asterisked in my book.

Not to derail but what are you talking about? I can only guess you are a Saints fan.

 And history will be written from your book, no doubt.

My 8 year old DLP's lamp is finally going out. Debating whether to get a whole new TV or just replace the lamp. It looks to be only $99; I'm just wondering if replacing it myself is doable. It's a 56" so a good size, I'd rather not have to spend the money right now.

Typically prices are up until after the superbowl, then they start clearing out the model year, so while you will see deals in Feb-March, availability will be rough until the next model year tvs start rolling in during the spring...

replacing a DLP lamp is extremely easy. The hardest part is finding one with a quality bulb at a reasonable price. There are a lot of cheap imitations out there.

WHODAT!

Thanks for the advice. Any way to tell the quality of the bulb? Being an older set, I didn't find too many on offer.

And go Niners!!

It makes sense that TV prices wouldn't drop until after the super bowl, but then again, I've seen a few places where people mentioned good sales on TVs before the super bowl. I sort of have to wait until I get the money and then on the right deal, but once I get the $$, I want the deals to happen soon!

Also, superbowl psssssht, the SEC and BCS championships have already happened.
War Eagle!

Costco has 60" LCDs (Samsung and other decent manufacturers if I'm not mistaken) for sub 1000 now. I want to get my taxes done first before I move onto splurging on a TV, but it's hard to resist. :(

Make sure you check with the repair shops around your area and see if they do warranty work for the major brands. I go to school with a guy who does TV repair and he told me to stay away from samsung, at east in the Birmingham, Al area. Apparently samsung pays so little for warranty work that all the local shops started turning away Samsung warranty work because samsung wanted to pay so little for the work and they had trouble getting paid at all sometimes. That would make it a lot more of a pain to get a samsung TV fixed under warranty should something happen where I live. Panasonic and Sharp are the brands he recommended, He says LG is good, no way in hell on Westinghouse or Samsung. Your TV repair shops may be different. Do some research in your area before you buy that way, in a worst case scenario, you're covered (yes, I know costco has a liberal return policy, but something bad is going to happen to someone, somewhere. Do not assume that it won't be you.)

Edit: Added more info on why shops started turning away samsung warranty work.

My Samsung has been going strong for almost a decade now, I've been very happy with it (first bulb replacement in fact). But still, good info on the warranty payments.

What are the current specs to look out for in a 55"? I'm going to look around Costco soon. I haven't kept up on displays for years now.

I picked up a 55" Panasonic Plasma, the UT series, for $750 from Costco on the Saturday before the game. Worth every penny. Dear god, this thing is beautiful. You're not going to find a better picture at this screen size for anywhere near this amount of money at this point. The only down side is that if you're putting it in a very bright room, lots of uncovered windows, uncovered windows facing the screen, etc, you're going to get a lot of reflections off the glass. The UT series doesn't have the glare filter and you have to go up to the ST series for that, and you'd probably be looking at $1,200.00 for a 55" ST series plasma.

I just bought the 50" version of the UT50 series and the black levels are insane! the only issue I have found is that my stand sits every so slightly crooked. It leans left about 1/8th of an inch for some reason! Nothing I can't correct with a shim.

That's a lot of TV for $900, but for $150 and 5" less, I'll take the Panny with superior image quality. I have a classmate that works at a TV repair shop and talked with him extensively about the best brands to go with with the presumption that, at some point, I would need a warranty repair and that I wanted the best image quality I could get for the money. I limited myself to looking at the Sharp Aquos sest and the Panasonic plasmas because they fit my price range, which topped out at $850-$900, with a preference for lower If I could.

Ah its a plasma, as much as I love plasmas and 55 inch , I need bigger
Good link thought thanks

If you noticed a 1/8th inch lean you are probably sitting too close to the TV.

Just make sure you don't get the 60" Sharp AQUOS LC-60LE600U that's been being advertised for very cheap lately. Normally the aquos tvs are very, very good. The 600U one is very stripped down, particularly in terms of menu and adjustment functions, and the picture is reportedly very dark. The 640U is supposedly quite nice, but much more expensive.
