Hi all! I just received a newegg gift card, which means it's time to upgrade my video card. My system is a few years old: i7 920 OCed to 3.8Ghz, 6GB DDR3-1600, Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 mobo, EVGA GTX260, OCZ Vertex 4 128GB SSD, 1TB WD Caviar Black, etc. My monitor is a Gateway FHD2400, which is 24" 1920x1200 with 60hz and 2 or 3ms response time. It also needs replacing, but the video card is first.

From reading reviews, it seems like the GTX670 variants offer great bang for the buck. That is what I'm learning towards. Is the GTX680 worth getting over a 670? Their performance seems a bit close. I'm not one to OC the video card, but if it comes OCed, then that would be fine with me.

AMD's 7970 Ghz Ed. seems like it costs too much for its performance when the 670 (especially OCed versions) come close and/or beat it.

I love playing FPS (TF2, just got Metro 2033, want Far Cry 3, etc), Starcraft 2, Darksider 2, Batman Arkham City, etc. My GTX260 has very noticeable slowdowns in Batman and Darksiders 2.

Looking at these cards:

Should I look at any others? Thank you for any advice!

I wouldn't pay the same price for a 670 that 680's were just selling for...just wait a week or so

I have the gigabyte 670OC and its awesome. Very quiet, cool and powerful. Have it OCed a fair amount and the hottest its gotten was in the low 60s with the fan still silent. It plays BF3 maxed and far cry almost maxed (ultra settings, 4x AA) @ 1080p

As someone who's had an eye out for another GPU, I can tell you that there haven't been too many great deals in 2013 aside from a reference PNY 670 that was going for less than $300 at Newegg (depending on whether Newegg charges you tax). If you want raw performance, the 7950 or 7970 offer the best bang for your buck if you overclock, but if you've had better experiences with the green team, the 670 is no slouch either. Any of these cards are going to perform great at your current resolution. If you can afford to wait it out, new cards are supposed to come out in the near future as they always do, but if getting a great value is important, I'd advise you to hold off for now. There are a few mail-in rebates here and there, but there aren't any great deals right now.

clock for clock a 680 is only about 3-5% faster than the 670 so if value is important than stick with the 670. coming from a gtx260, even a gtx660 or stx660 ti would be a MASSIVE upgrade. I picked up a non reference gtx660 ti for 230 bucks and sold the game that came it for 20 bucks making it just a $210 card after rebate which is not bad at all. a gtx660ti would be over 2.5 times faster than your gtx260.

Just picked up a MSI 670 PE for 369.99, they next day it went up 20$ -- I guess this is common practice with newegg?

Where are you guys sellng your games? I have zero friends that play games on the pc, they all use xbox/ps3. I have two game coupons for Borderlands 2 and Assassins Creed 3 -- both of which I already own.

Anyway the 670 is a beast and the MSI model is BIOS overvolted so It overclocks like a champ, and under 375$. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127685

A lot of great responses here. Thanks! I did see some great deals around Christmas, but I wasn't ready to buy then. I suppose the 680 isn't that great of a deal if it's only slightly faster than a 670. I think I'll focus on a good deal on a 670.

I have only heard minor rumors about anything new from NVidia and/or AMD coming. Has anyone heard anything concrete yet? If there was some type of announcement or release date in the near future, I'd considering waiting for a next gen card.

I'm happy I waited since Nvidia is doing their CES live event right now! I can't wait to see if they announce their new cards and release dates.

I hope you dont actually believe that is going to happen...

I thought it could. If it's not, then that's fine, too. There's nothing wrong with hope. I don't know what they're going to or not going to announce.

Another site indicated that new cards won't be announced for 4 months. Oh well.

the reason I say there is no chance of that is because we would have had some leaks long before now if something was getting released this week.
