Been using windows 8 for a few weeks back........no complaints so far except...

When I open a folder with a large amount of files, especially photos with thumbnails, explorer will crash.

It quickly restarts but it closes any windows I had open and cancels all my file transfers which is really annoying.

I saw a couple of people reporting this in the MS forums but no real solutions...

Anybody else experiencing this?

Running win 8 64 enterprise.

Cheers

Do you see any log information being generated in the Event Viewer?

Well, windows always has response issues accessing folders with large file counts but I have never seen it crash from it. You sure there isn't a corrupt file in the folder maybe from a hard drive or other hardware issue?

Did you install any codec pack? If so remove it.

Don't think there's a hardware issue... Same system that has been rock solid for the past 3 or so years... Not sure about corrupt files.

No, I read about that...

The only "foreign" thing that I have installed that might be causing issues is the startisback start menu, though I haven't read about anyone else having problems...

Sshh.. you just gave MS a free exit.

Definitely sounds like a bad extension (codec or thumbnail generator). I can confirm that I've gone through directories with tens of thousands of media files without seeing any issues like this.

Sigh... oh well, guess its time to disable/remove stuff one by one till I find the culprit.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Quick update... I think I found the culprit.

I went to my add/remove programs sections and noticed something I installed near the date the crashes started....and it was a bunch of codecs.... I didn't install them intentionally, I installed the Geovision Multiview software that is CCTV monitoring software and it installed a bunch of crap. I removed the codecs and the crashes appear to have stopped.

Sadly I kind of need the software so I will have to live with it...
