I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my 2.4GHz i7 (2760QM) MacBook Pro, and I'm wondering which would offer better performance - 1333 MHz CL9 or 1600 MHz CL10?
Yes I'm looking for a 16GB kit. I can only find one 1600 CL9 kit, and that is more than twice as expensive as any 1600 CL10 kit. The 1600 CL10 kits are in the same price range as the 1333 CL9 kits. So that's why I'm wondering if 1600 CL10 or 1333 CL9 is faster.
Edit: I see you are talking about a laptop. It looks like you are correct about the timings of laptop ram. I would probably say go for the DDR3 1600 CL10 over the DDR3 1333 CL9.
Intel CPUs do not benefit all that much from lower latencies. (The exception being if the latencies are absolutely horrible.) They benefit more from bandwidth. DDR3 1600MHz seems to often be about the sweet spot as faster clocks past that often reach the point of diminishing returns very quickly.
Depends If can change timings in your bios -have a look.., just get the max supported ddr3 by your memory controller for the cpu as listed for your laptop. most likely max 1333/1600 get the lowest latency either way, you won't notice a difference anyways at these speeds.
you guys are making me consider upgrading my 8 gigs of 1600 9 cas into like a 8 gigs of 1866 or something lol i need to check to see what my asus board can do.
1600mhz cas 10 will be faster in every respect. higher bandwidth due to the higher frequency as well as lower latency (10 clock cycles at 800mhz takes less time than 9 clock cycles at 667mhz).
