So a friend of mine has a cisco 806 that had the IOS image corrupted some how. He let me borrow it to see if I could do anything to get it running...

Well Im not doin so hot so far :p

To start off the router boots straight into to ROMMON. This is what it says when it boots.
Code:
System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(4r)XM1, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)
TAC Support: [url]http://www.cisco.com/tac[/url]
Copyright (c) 2001 by cisco Systems, Inc.
C800/SOHO series (Board ID: 17-83) platform with 16384 Kbytes of main memory

loadprog: error - Invalid image for platform
e_machine = 100, cpu_type = 83
boot: cannot load "flash:"

Then it drops right to ROMMON.

'dir flash:' shows "3297708 bytes (0x3251ac) 0xe542 c806-sy6-mz.122-2.XI1.bin" so there is an IOS on there already.

When I try to boot the image right from ROMMON I get:
Code:
rommon 5 > boot c806-sy6-mz.122-2.XI1.bin
loadprog: error - Invalid image for platform
e_machine = 100, cpu_type = 83
open: failed to find and/or load the bootloader: "flash:c806-sy6-mz.122-2.XI1.bi
n"
loadprog: error - on file open
boot: cannot load "c806-sy6-mz.122-2.XI1.bin"

So then I set up a tftp server with the 2 diffrent IOS versions I have. On the router I set all the 'set' varibles then do a tftpdnld and once again I get with both...

Code:
-snip-
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
File reception completed.
TFTP flash copy: Invalid file header, copy terminated.
Reason: Wrong target platform OR corrupt file.

And just so you dont ask...Yes it is deffinatly an 806, printed right on the back of the router. :)

I checked the MD5s of the IOSs I have and they check out so I dont think they are corrupt.

Im not too sure what to try next.

I read somewheres that formatting the flash may help but I cant figure out if thats possible from rommon.

Any ideas would be wonderful :)

edit: just a thought, but could it maybe be someting wrong with the flash memory in it?

More that I mess with it the more I think it has hardware problems.

I tried uploading an image via xmodem and it still tells me it is for the wrong router. I think its gone crazy and thinks its something that it isnt.

Anyway to try and determin if the hardware is funcioning properly?

Maybe try the latest 12.2 (that you have enough RAM/flash to run) in case its a known bug that's been fixed already.

File name Min. Memory (MB) Min. Flash(MB) Date Released
c806-y6-mz.122-4.YA11.bin 16 8 09-JAN-2006

Well I would if I had a copy of that image to test. The guy who had the router had these images and I dont have access to any others.

You can DL a new image at cisco.com but you have to pay for it unless the router is under warranty/contract with them.

Maybe call TAC and beg? :) If you have any SMARTNet contracts at all, they're usually pretty cool about anything (except hardware replacements).

I tried yet another image and still same error.

And now sometimes when I boot it up it just freezes and throws "BAD ram address" errors at the console.

I think its at the end of its life :(

I would have really liked to play with it if I got it working.

Give me the exact error, I may be able to dig something up ;)

I about to leave for work, but later Ill hook it back up and give you the exact errors.

I hate to dig up an ancient thread like this but I couldn't help myself.

So recently I decided to break out all my old Cisco gear and have a go at it again. Tonight I came across this old 806 I had in a box and have spent the last 3 hours trying to get the thing to boot. After digging around for a while google delivers me this very thread over 6 years later!

I finally took the screwdriver to it and opened it up to see both the flash and the DRAM slots completely empty, I have a feeling that might be part of my problem :)

Sorry to dig this up but I had to share!

Well if this thread had been new I were going to say open the cover and check for loose or missing parts haha.

I see loose parts all too much with Cisco gear when it gets slammed around by UPS.
