I think it still may be too early to decide, I've been contemplating moving from iOS and the 920 definitely seems like it's going to be gamechanger for Nokia

One thing however stands out on the Samsung though is the larger battery 2033mAh vs. 2000mAh on the Nokia

As far as I've read from the specs the samsung also has expandable storage and nokia does not.

the samsung , apart from the camera button, different styled home button, and status LED, looks like it's 99.9% the same as the Galaxy s3, same hardware (1GB vs 2GB of ram), different placement of the speaker. I wonder if they will be able to dual boot Android and WP8 on the GS3 and ATIV S

also, check out the other W8 products on samsungs page.

ATIV Tab (SnapDragon Krait powered 10.1" 1366x768 tablet)

ATIV Smart PC(Atom powered dock-able tablet 11.6" 1366x768)
ATIV Smart PC Pro (i3 Based Dock-able Tablet 11.6" 1920x1080)

I still don't understand what the big difference is between all the Windows Phone 8 devices... I have heard a lot of hype about the 920 but don't understand why. Like, why would I buy a Nokia Win8 device over a Samsung.

Because the Form Factor is different, and may appeal to you. Because the build quality is nicer (IMO anyway). It's also just as fast. Different strokes for different folks.

The advantages the Lumia 920 has over the Ativ S are: slightly higher res (1280x768 vs 1280x720), wireless charging, super sensitive touch screen (ie use phone with gloves on), pureview camera and screen. The Ativ S is a little thinner and has a microSD slot though.

Honestly it's a bit of a hard choice, however my experience with the 900 says to me Nokia is worth the hat tip in terms of support and bonuses. They're going to be adding bluetooth file transfer to the 900 in the future just because they're awesome. As far as I know they are the only one bringing it to WP7. I personally couldn't care less about that, but it's an example.

My 900 chassis is awesome too, I hand it to my friends and then hit it out of their hands and they freak out. I imagine this choice will be easier when the hardware starts getting fully reviewed.

No Windows Phone 8x in the poll?

?
I haven't seen this phone. The poll is for what I will buy come October 26th or whatever.

EDIT: Just looked it up. I'm not a fan of HTC. Everyone that I've seen that has one have either not liked it or have been underwhelmed by it.

I really appreciate the input from everyone so far. The decision is going to be tough but I think it will end up being a win no matter which I decide on.

This. The real deciding factor could come down to price. If one has a lot better deal then that might be the one you go with.

For me, it's the 920's camera with hardware optical image stabilization, the 920's display running at 60 Hz and with low-reflectance for viewing it in sunlight, and the 920's super-sensitive touch allowing one to actually use the phone with gloves on that does it for me. Throw in the added goodies that Nokia makes exclusive for a few months, like their offline Maps or Drive apps, plus their well-regarded down-the-road updates and support, and I think it makes it the best of the bunch. That said, I don't need wireless charging (but it doesn't hurt), and I don't need more than 32gb or removable storage. A few extra pixels on the side doesn't hurt either.

That screen on the 920 will be way better for phone purposes than the ativ.

That said, I'll wait and see about the Snapdragon S4 Pro W8 phones that's supposedly launching toward year's end.

Maybe the Nokia true PureView.

A bit OT but do you know if they have better video software (Lumia specifically or even for WP8)? The one thing that I liked about some android phones is they have better presets for video and audio. We were at a concert and my recordings were kind of useless because the lighting blew out the image so you couldn't tell what it was, and the audio was blown out from the bass. On the ICS phone using concert mode and adjusting a couple of settings the videos were actually watchable and you could hear what the band was singing.

Another thing to consider about the screens is 4.5 vs 4.8. Is 4.8 too big?
Also samsung has also had very vibrant screens. I've not seen a nokia smartphone first hand to know.

The point about the 920's screen is a pretty big one, it's easy to forget it when you're discussing specs. I live in Arizona and the clearblack tech on the screen is fantastic for letting me have full visibility even in bright sunlight. That alone is enough to push me towards Nokia every time. I don't have to turn up the brightness either, I always leave it on medium auto.

I don't know about anything special regarding exposure control for video recordings. The optical image stabilization will be helpful at minimizing hand jitters. The 920 is expected to have HAAC Rich Recording microphones. Here's a video demonstrating Rich Recording on the Nokia 808.

It's between Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X for me at the moment, just depends which phone Verizon chooses to carry.

One reason why I don't consider getting HTC is this:
fld09c.jpg

Build quality just isn't comparable to Nokia.

I'm kinda put off by 8x battery - 1800mAh, which is much smaller then Lumia. Also with higher ppi count, it might not be enough to power it for long time. And usually HTC phones do have battery problems, like OneX.

Also Nokia lets you use the screen with gloves on, and in my winter/ late autumn climate, it's a must have in the phone.

Right now I do plan then getting yellow Lumia 920

I want the Lumia so bad, I hope it comes to Verizon at some point. Until now, I suppose I'll wait to upgrade my iP4.

Edit: Looks like it isn't coming to Verizon according to a post in this thread. DAMN IT.

Those aren't necessarily 100% no. There were earlier shots of an 822 in their inventory system and I've seen random posts that strongly point to a 922 as well. Having a different model number makes sense in terms of added CDMA tech as well as allowing AT&T to make statements like that without lying. Then again I've been let down by Verizon before (google the HTC Merge).

I want it so bad, it's the only phone I'm eager to actually buy. My Plan B is upgrade to the iP5 and keep my extensive app list intact. I'd let it all go for the Lumia.

I dont see myself picking yet, I will wait and hear what people have to say. But right now I would lean toward samsung. Expandable memory is a very important feature to me. I prefer phones with small internal memory just for the OS and apps and a microSD slot. I treat them exactly like you should treat your computers. 2 drives, 1 for the OS you can wipe out or switch out and one for data you can move from device to device with no loss of time after google syncs your contacts and all. I find this even more important in phones.

That being said while I am excited for WP8 I cant jump on the bandwagon fast. I need to see how things play out, NFC support? Google wallet? And a few key apps like the ability to control a PC remotely and logitech harmony link. As ironic as it may seem right now android works better with windows than windows phone.

The perfect WP8 for mean would be a Nokia 820 (because of screen size and sd) with the 920 camera and pentaband support for tombile.

Very much sucks that the 920 will be an AT&T exclusive. If it weren't for that I would pick one up as soon as they're released. :(

I'm currently on Verizon but my contract has been up and I'm tired of paying out the ass each month. So I will be twitching to Straightalk/ATT prepaid and buying the phone outright.

For me it comes down to iPhone too small, Samsung too large.

The question is then HTC or Nokia. I want to say Nokia although I do prefer the look of the HTC so it will come back to whether 4.5" is too large for me to enjoy. The front camera seems better on the HTC as well.

Yet for reasons above including battery, display size, the touch screen, the build quality and I could go on I am starting to think I would be a fool to not go Lumia. The plastic looks a little ugly though, I prefer the rubbery look on the HTC.

Is there a way that I can modify/reset the poll to add HTC? I personally don't like HTC but I am curious what people's vote would be if it was in the list.

yeah the HTC shell looks epic.

I just cant bring myself to buy an HTC, They seem to drop support quicker then most phones at least under android. I try not to support a company who will not release updates.

So many of their devices should have gotten ICS and never did. They lie saying bad performance it why it wont be updated.

I suppose WP8 doesnt have some form of TouchSense for WP8 does it? Maybe that will bring updates sooner.

After the HTC Evo and the Thunderbolt, I will never ever get another HTC phone again period. Both were just terrible phones for me, HTC is almost as bad as Motorola almost, Motorola really takes the cake for me as the WORST Manufacturer of android phones ever.

Interesting, as there are many people who swear by Motorola (mostly on the strength of their radios) and desperately want them to make the next Nexus.

I think I've seen more hate for Samsung than any other oem.

I believe two of the colors, cyan and one of the others, come in the matte finish.

Black and Grey are the matte finishes for the 920, they'll look like the black & cyan Lumia 900s. The rest are gloss, which is unfortunate in my opinion. A yellow or red matte finish would be an instant buy in my eyes.

Lol, I went throigh 3 Droid Xs, 2 Droid 2 Globals and all of them had some sort of major fault, gps not working, wifi not working, battery lasting only 2hrs on standby, huge defect in the screen, random restarts 4-5 times a day. In my experience the Motorola QC sucks ass, I have had one samsung phone so far and havent had any issues other than the slightly weaker signal strength, but everything works, and works fine. I also keep being reminded when I read numerous articles where moto just drops support for the phone immediately afterwards such as the bionic and phones like the photon 4g etc not getting ICS and neither were really a year old before the stopped getting support if they ever did. My D2G never got gingerbread, hell I saw only 2 updates after I bought it on launch day. Moto just has the worst track record for me so far. Just from personal experience I can tell you that for android OEMs its Samsung>LG>HTC>=Motorola.

LG.

Anyways, I've never been a fan of Motorola, especially with their/Verizon's bootloader locking bullshit. I will say that the Razr i/m looks amazing, and if we can get an affordable GSM model, it'll be my girl's next phone.

HTC certainly has their quality control issues (lifted screens, mostly) but they're not horrible. I've never had an issue with recent Samsung phones. Had the Epic, AT&T's S2, Skyrocket, Infuse, GNex, and the S3... Build quality has been impeccable.
