Hey. Where can I buy+download the Mac OS X now over the net?

I was going to make a snarky comment, but OP really does have a point. I can't figure out how to purchase a standalone copy on the Apple.com site either. You can only find instructions on how to upgrade from within an existing version of OSX.

But that's how it works. You CAN'T buy a standalone copy of OS X, you get one when you buy a Mac and then upgrade from there.

Has it always been that way with OSX? I know a few years ago I got a standalone copy of OSX Leopard on CD to upgrade a Mac I used for testing at work. I thought you could still do that?

I'm far from a Mac expert but I guess since OS X only legally runs on Macs and every Mac comes with a copy of OS X, why would there even need to be anything but upgrade versions of Mac OS X sold directly?

It would save a lot of time if you were running a machine that was a few versions behind, but I'd imagine that's a fringe case for most regular Mac users.

I'm willing to bet it is possible to acquire a standalone copy, but it's probably only available though a volume license agreement.

Leopard was one of the last versions you could buy standalone ISOs of.

You could buy a copy a few months ago, now you can't. Where else can I buy a copy of the damn mac os?

Apple should have Mountain Lion available on USB sticks in the not too distant future (if they don't already).

10.8 like 10.7 is available for download only from the app store. (maybe try itunes for older versions? or download the new app store?)

10.7 had USB sticks, though I read that 10.8 will not be available this way. You can still create the USB installer after you download it though.

thanks. but i was thinking about buying and downloading it now, any links?

The buy and download is only through the App Store now, which basically limits you to 10.6 and newer to grab the download.

I've read a person say that they just went to a Mac store and bought the disc. The salesperson of course tried to tell them to bring in their system and they would install it for him but he declined; he was using it for a Hackintosh, obviously.
