Introducing the Source Filmmaker

I've really liked Valve over the years. They've done some good work. This looks really cool. I've always thought it would be cool to play a single player game through then watch it after you've completed it with the ability to change your perspective and w/o all the retries/re loads after you die. This is making strides towards that.

This is why Valve is/has been one of the best studios out there. They make the tools and give them to the community, then let the community make art out of it.

This is going to poop all over the garrys mod videos. People are going to make some GREAT STUFF.

This looks like a very powerful tool they just unleashed. I can't wait for the engine to get an upgrade (Source2?). The movie ability at that point might go from being Toy Storyish to more realistic like for those diy film guys.

Lol godmachine me too. Every release valve does without hl3.... a little piece of me dies....and there's not much left.

That being said, this looks like yet another cool service for them to build a community around...and that always a good thing.

One of the other valve tools that is a hidden gem is the demo smoothing tool. You can easily turn your demos into cinematics. Thats what alot of the pro movie makers do.

You guys need to understand how Valve works. They have a flat hierarchy structure. Meaning there are no managers, no chain of command, just a flat structure of personnel. People get together in clusters to work on projects. If enough people have enough faith in a product that someone pitches then they will move their desks to the appropriate group and start working on it. If they don't think it will work, it gets abandoned or a small core group of believers ends up doing it on some other time. They do things on their own time when it's right and ready for release. Episode 3, I almost assure you is being worked on, along with the core components for a half-life mmo. They are already getting their DOTA stuff together to hopefully get that into place, but i'll bet you they are doing it.

Looks easier then the last movie I made using Quake, which required custom scripts to simply move a camera around and do cuts...

VALVE is just awesome.

Yes.

This is what happens when a major gaming studio remains in private hands and does not go public.

When a studio goes public then there is a board of directors (usually void of creative minds) that pushes to profits and margins no matter what. Sling out some mediocre crap fast, fast, fast. Hipe it with a media blitz to have people lined up to buy. Don't release any demos, just a bunch of pre-animated movies that have little to do with the actual game play. Quick, because we have a bunch of game do like this. And when we have ridden this horse until it is about dead; cash out and sell out stock and walk away. Let someone else pick up the pieces.

This is true i'll give them credit for that at least.

Not to post twice. But that was hilarious. Probably one of the better ones made.

I kinda wish they'd make a monthly short / cartoon off of this. The character personalities and voices they have come up with are really good. On par with Red vs. Blue.

It gets better. What you saw in the video... with the right items equipped... is how maps look when you play Pyro now. One of the first items you can get is the goggles, which you get when you dominate a player who has them (easy as hell to get, like the Gibus).

Example: http://i.imgur.com/kaZam.jpg (woah, awesome random filename there!)

That map normally looks like any other: Industrial and gritty. With the goggles on, fire becomes sparkly stars, grass and flowers and items like healthpacks turn into cake. It's a fuckin' riot. If you have the right flamethrower, it looks like a tuba spewing rainbows, too. Just like the video.

So anyone messing around with this thing? I have just started checking it out and it is very cool.

WTF are you talking about? This software is nothing but a fluke because someone got bored with doing nothing. All Vlave really does anymore is make money as a media distribution company. They do not make games anymore, that's apparantly not profitable enough when they can sit back and enjoy the steam income for free.

L4D, L4D2, DOTA2, TF2's updates, etc all want to have a talk with you.

I'd be careful, they're carrying baseball bats (and rocket launchers...and various other weapons).
