China's deputy director of the National Copyright Administration told reporters that Proview is "the rightful owner" of the iPad trademark. Well now, this case just got a whole lot more interesting.

Apple Inc. risks losing the right to use the iPad trademark in China, a senior official suggested Tuesday, as a Chinese court was seeking to mediate a settlement between the technology giant and a local company challenging its use of the iPad name.

ZOMBIE JOBS KILL PROVIEW NOW!! MUST EAT PATENT!!

Looks like Apple will need to buy out that trademark so they can trade more "i" products for Chinese kidneys...

China and Copyright are two words that should never be used in the same sentence ever.

Apple will buy the name patent a second time and once more it will be ruled that Apple did not purchase the rights to the name in China.

I definitely have a feeling like they are just trying to protect one of their own country's company.

Not sure why Apple cares, I mean 90% of the Apple products sold in China are counterfeit, sold in counterfeit Apple stores!

Who cares. Apple isn't an American company anymore.

I always wondered if they decided to make their products mostly/entirely in America and cut into their profit some while keeping prices similar, if they would actually end up making more or at least changing the view some have of them. I know I would definitely give them a serious look if that was the case.

Wait?

I thought Apple had hired a 3rd party to trick Proview into selling the trademark to Apple.

Did that not happen?

What happened was Apple hired someone to pose as a different company and then offered X amount of dollars for the iPad trademark. They agreed, but what they didn't know was they then gave it to Apple.

I've actually read the opposite, basically Proview used a subsidiary to sell the name to Apple for 55k, than came back all these years later and said, "Oh no, they didn't have the right to sell it in the first place and actually we need 2B."

Oh no, your right that Apple used a dummy company, but the rest of what I said was right.

I don't know, I would take anything a company based in a country infamous for smuggling, copying technology, making forgeries, and having it's economy profiting from pirated exports with a pinch of salt.

If they can open up fake Apple stores without anyone questioning it, then they can forge a document and change the date to make it look like they had the patent before Apple...Not a big fan of Apple stuff anymore, but this sounds like a crock of s#!t.

This case is not that simple. Apple bought the patent. However, they bought it through an intermediary (which is perfectly legal!) Proview feels ripped off because if they knew Apple was behind the acquisition, they would have jacked up the price.

This is a simple case of "if I know my buyer is mega rich, I can jack up the price." Next time Proview, do your due diligence and see who OWNS the company buying your patent. Dumbasses.

Apple: I've got tens of billions in cash in my bank account.
Small company claiming infringement: nag, nag, nag, nag

yeah...Apple can just buy them out, problem solved.

I'd buy. I just bought an iPad, but I'd buy a Mac if it was made in the good ol' USA. When buying things, that's one of my big things: made in the USA. I support my country and jobs when buying things.

This is pretty much the only thing that would get me to buy an Apple product. Maybe.

No kidding. I don't like Apple, but I think this is a chinese going, "lets screw over this American company,"

As opposed to Apple saying "let's screw over this American company"? Forgot about the iPhone trademark issue already?

Really?...and what would that make Apple now?....epic dumbasses?

Actually, what you said, makes it simpler than ever. But the Chinese official is trying to get Proview more money.

Umm did Apple actually 'own' the company.

It is possible to set up a fake company with a random unknown Apple engineer as the sole owner so it cant be traced.

so basically the Chinese company is pissed they weren't aware they sold the ipad rights to Apple via a third party company ?

..... so this Chinese company wants to make billions more for something they were perfectly happy selling for way less to another company they didn't know was affiliated to apply ?

And as such because this Chinese company couldn't milk as much out of this trademark, they are calling shenanigans seriously ??? They should just grow up >_>:

this is something akin to a white guy who asks his asian friend to go into the store to buy an ipad, so that he won't get over charged because they see it's a foreigner white guy who wants to buy.

The seller later finds out actually, the person on the receiving end was some rich white guy. So he he then tattle tales to the courts to say the sale was not legal seeing as he didn't know the buyer was actually intended for some rich person that the seller could have milked way more money if he had known ....

lul...

Be real funny to see the real Jonathan Hargreaves stand up and make claim to the patent, seeing how the person who actually gave it to Apple used that name to buy it .
