Just picked up the newest version. Already have a full HTPC w/ XBMC downstairs, just wanted something to play movies via network share and Netflix.

Any tips/tweaks? I read about the added USB Keyboard support, so I will def be getting something for it. Anything else?

Dump the stock firmware and put on B-Rad's WDLXTV firmware.

I'm not sure the use of a USB keyboard would be.

They are really a pretty strait-forward device, it plays about every kind of format you can think of with the exception of some ISO rips (I believe). Windows media player has a "play to" feature you can use to browse content on a PC, then right click and "playto" the WDTV and it will instantly start playing.

Is there a B-Rad firmware for the newer devices?
I don't think there is, and yes, I agree the stock interfaces is very nice and offers the best combination of streaming options as well.

I understand that a keyboard works, but whats the use of one?

Main use would be to perform searches and have the ability to type it in..
Such as searching on the Netflix interface.. or Youtube..
If you have a long string of characters to enter in.. its kind of a pain to have to utilize the arrow keys on the included remote to key in all of your entries

For now I think I will keep it stock. Seems to do everything I want. The movie art is not downloading, but no big deal.

you wont get movie tiles and proper art work until you useb-rad. then you get it all!

example:

scaled.php

stock firmware can not do the above.

Can b-rad firmware do that over a network stream or local only.

Also OP.. If you stream over the network. Don't use samba it sucks. And the WDTV was not designed for it. Use the media server option. Which is a UPnP server. I recommend mezzmo.

network can be done, i have got it to work about %90 with mine, but haven't finished it to show the full imdb info and such. you use ThumbGen, (can be sloooooooooow at times) to make all my covers and such

i just simply use the network location option from video menu and access shares on my computer, no issues yet....

I think there is some confusion over which version of the WDTV Live that the OP is talking about..

It was stated that he purchased the newest model. If that is so, then that is the WDTV Live SMP.
It supports moviesheets/movie art out of the box. Also 3rd party firmware development is locked out on this model, so there is no b-rad wdlxtv firmware options for this newest model.

Didn't even know there was different firmware out there for these. I'll need to check that out.

I found WDTV Live to be quite buggy, problems with it seeing flac files over networks, constantly dropping wireless connection and just random weird issues that seem to crop up, still it does do a lot for a small amount of money.

Mine sucks. I tried to watch a few movies on it through CinemaNow, and they were all really choppy. I had to turn one off after trying it 3 times and having it freeze 10 min in.

I haven't touched it since.

Don't stream over samba.

WDlive sucked for me on wireless, as soon as i wired it, not one problem!

Well I just built a HTPC, on it right now fired up for the first time so no more WDTV for me.

i have my wdlive plus in the bedroom and will have the htpc in the living room, fits nice and doesnt take up space.
