A mechanical keyboard for $27 shipped?

Great deal, if the key layout was a little different i would have purchased without a second thought.

A G81 is a Cherry ML switch if I'm not mistaken.

A G80 is the normal Cherry MX switch.

Edit: I'm sorry, apparently a G81 its a Cherry MY.

Awesome. Thanks.

Already have a Leopold keyboard, but I'll use this one at work or something.

Yeah. I read up on MY switches a bit, and they seem to be love/hate. But for $28, I'm sure it'll be fine.

Cool, be sure to post back when you get the keyboard. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

I'm interested in getting a key set consisting of numbers 0-9 for my White Leopold "Otaku" Tenkeyless board, would this be my best option?

LOL

"The biggest reason for buying one of these keyboards might be to harvest the key caps and put them on a modern board with Cherry MX switches. "

I prefer the part that describes how the keys feel. :p

I will. At this point it's a "how bad can it be?" impulse buy. Coincidentally, my boss used to work for Cherry, so if it sucks, maybe I can guilt him into buying it.

I actually purchased a used black version of this keyboard from a different seller.

I was going back and forth in between the new light colored one or a used black one.. and I decided that I wanted black more than I wanted a brand spanking new keyboard.

Some people hate the MY switches and some people really like them. I never really thought that they were too stiff when I had one years ago... so decided to get another.

Does anyone have any idea what the key rollover is on these? I would buy them if it was at least 6.

Personally I love the layout, this gets you everything a full sized keyboard has but shaves off an inch or 2.

Ya I would want to know for sure. Funny you mention it one time I tried to register at geekhack and I could not. Simply would not let me. I imagine it is pretty hard to grow a community when people cannot register.

Based on comments from the peeps on GH.

Crappy Cherry MY switches = no good for typing
Lasered Keys = Not as good for key harvesting. It would have been ok if they were double shot.

Hope this helps.

Got mine today, and uh...

The "wet newspaper" description in that article is pretty spot on. The amount of force required to depress the keys is ridiculous, which leads to spelling mistakes aplenty.

I'll give it a week, I guess. Maybe it will break in or I'll get used to it.

Ebay.

Avoiding.

eBay is a scammer and theives best friend... ebay simply does not care if you come in contact with one of these people. Believe me, I am the one that made them change their entire "$10,000 we have you coverered!" bogus lie..... ebay = evil, I have 100% proof of it.

####Say no to paypal. (paypal is hands down not good at all anymore, amazon payments sunk its ship with better support, AND ITS FREE compared to paypal which obviously rips you off)

####Say no to ebay. Craigslist, amazon seller, many many other better options to sell stuff besides fleabay full of scammers and scum.

Pass, sorry... been there, done that, don't get burned from ebay like i have multiple times, usually small stuff but big stuff as well! No, I always got my stuff back or didn't ship it out... but its full of people like that. And ebay WILL NOT pay you if you get scammed, believe me... I know and can prove it.

You can get burned here too. You just have to be smart about who you buy from and sell to. Even then shit happens. One of the first trades that I made on the forums was an expensive crosstrade. I think that a month later the guy got banned for scamming someone, it could have easily been me.

Yep, and I've had good people do bad things online in these "tough times" ... that was their excuse for scamming people online like a coward..... ebay at its finest! .....

Got this keyboard. It requires quite a bit of pressure to press a key, certainly different than the cherry MX series keys.

There are scammers everywhere, you just have to be smart about who you buy from.

I have a very beat up Cherry ML4100 tenkeyless ultra-compact. Never knew what kind of switches it used, but apparently they are Cherry MLs. These are at least a little better thought of from what I can gather than the MYs, but only just. Seems I'm in for a treat when my Leopold comes in later this week.

I just received the black usb version of this keyboard that I ordred the same day I made the OP. In the post, it was listed as used, but from what I can tell it is either new or used very little since it looks brand new.

The keys are slightly stiffer than my Logitech G11. I can definitely tell with my left hand.

It will probably take me a few days to get used to this type of keyboard again, but I didn't feel at all like the key action felt bad in any way.

It doesn't have a "pop" feeling that cheapy membrane or clicky keyboards have when you press the keys. It is more like a very smooth keypress.

And you don't even have to press the key very far down for it to register the keystroke.

If that is what people are complaining about, then i can see where they are coming from since it is not like what they are used to.

Interesting board. I'm ordering one tonight just to try out this mod.

I won't be making much use of it since I already have a Filco and a Leopold sitting on my desk, but it might make a fun little keyboard to replace one of the shitty dell keyboards currently in there.

I still have an IBM model m keyboard from 1984, love that sucker. How do leopold compare that?

likewise i got a model m from 1988 and love that thing to death. got it used and dirty from ebay... a few wipes of clorox wipes and it looks new. Been thinking of getting a HHKB (lite 2) since the professional 2 is out of my price range.
