Stop with this "modern warfare" theme, bring back real FPS games

Exactly, I'd just like something different, a return to twitch based games with modern technology would be what I would like to see.
To elaborate, I tried the BF3 beta and enjoyed it. I really don't mind BF3 or even COD style gameplay. It can be fun. It just sucks that it's really the only option right now.

But what I was really getting at was it's the setting more than the game play that is killing me right now. I played years upon years of CS so the whole modern thing was kind of played out for me right from the get go.

It just sucks that I have to rely on a 3rd person/RPG hybrid like Mass Effect to get a shooter that isn't set in some "realistic" modern middle east conflict.

Yeah I love BF (although I don't camp, it's just boring) but I also love the old-style arena shooters. Some choice would be nice.

I don't think the COD style and BF style need to end at all, but they shouldn't need to come at the expense of arena shooters. I'm guessing the publishers are all allergic to the genre now because of the UT3 flop...not realising that it was the quality and competitiveness of the game itself that was the cause, rather than a diminished interest in twitch shooters.

I thought me and the OP were on the same page but not so sure now. I'm not that interested in Quake type games...Here is what I thought he was talking about.

You know how people became tired of WW2 type games. That's how I feel about the current FPS games. BF3, yet another game with modern day weapons or close to them game. Hell I'd rather an updated BF1942 with the new Frostbyte engine rather than another current gen weapons game.

IT's sad this is all these devs can come up with that people find fun. The options are endless in creation yet the only games that become popular are the modern warfare and BF type games.

OP, someone mentioned Hard Reset and it was just updated. Check it out.

Just found this, interesting. A new Tribes game. http://tribesascend.com/

I miss games like Quake and Doom, wish FPS games still had that kind of style today. Today's FPS games are just bullshit and uninspiring.

I love BC2 and BF3, but UT04 is my favorite FPS of all time. There's nothing like instagib, I used to play just to keep my reflexes up for other games :D

cod and quake are not so different, both are 1v1 in competitive enviroment, and you die ultra fast in both games

never really enjoyed battlefields unless im playing with a bunch of friends or at a big lan.

Oh man, anyone remember Instagib Bombing run in low grav for UT04? Most fun i've ever had in a FPS game!

I'm looking forward to the new Tribes revival.

I think it'll make its return but not on the large scale for awhile. Services like XBLA, PSN or Steam Indy are going to be platforms for Quake revisions, Serious Sams and the like.

Did you play Hard Rest on PC?

Also, I would melt and fall apart if iD did a new Hexen game... OH MY!

Hexen used iD tech, but was developed by Raven Software. You would have to try to convince them. Not sure what they are doing these days...

Because bunny hopping and playing with ultra sensitivity takes so much skill

You clearly know what you are talking about... Most quake players play at much lower sensitivity than what is common in todays fps games. Strafe jumping, not bunny hopping, is a complex series of key presses and mouse movement. It takes tons of practice. Go play some quakelive and tell me how badly you get owned in clan arena when trying to play with high sensitivity while spamming the space bar.

Why would he go play Quake Live? He already said it takes no skill :p

It's a cop out though, trust me.

I too am getting very tired of all these modern warfare games - heck, even the games set in other time periods (like world war 2) that have almost identical gameplay. However, those arena style games couldn't be more boring to me. I prefer games where tactics and thinking dominates over the ability to move your mouse to the right spot at the right time (yes, even in real-time FPS games). Mindless "twitching" around gets boringly tiresome very fast for me. What we need are FPS games that take the thinking/tactical/creativity based gameplay of games like Tribes 2, America's Army, World War 2 Online, and ADVANCE them, not just copy them - and "advance" does not equate to "simplify."

Dear Gamers,
Fuck you, we're rich.

I feel the same way. Too much modern warfare in games. Give me more sci-fi shooters. I mostly played Tribes back in the day because I never cared for DM. But I loved that most games at the time were based on their own sci-fi universe. We need more shooters with rocket launchers, jetpacks, and laser guns. I'm bored with modern weaponry.

Also, I want more than anything for the new Tribes to be awesome. But I fear that duplicating what made the first one great may be beyond Hi-Rez Studio's ability.

Half of them were fired after Singularity tanked...the rest are now tasked solely with making maps for COD.

Games of all genres have changed over the years to cater a much larger, more casual, more $ making crowd. Companies that didn't follow that recipe went under.

Seriously, if you're still young enough to have your reflexes,it's hard for me to imagine how you could find something like Black Ops entertaining. Sit in a corner and hide for 10 minutes at a time, or "sprint" in two second bursts. Any time I think of people who play those kind of games, I imagine either balding overweight redneck-types sitting by their computers, surrounded by an arsenal of rifles and submachine guns OR 15 year old kids. Yeah that might be offensive to some, and I don't intend for it to be, but that's just what I picture in my mind :D

I think you're wrong, I think that gameplay style had its time and it's gone and nearly everyone who was interested in it has moved on. Quake was my first on-line FPS, and I eventually moved on, and it has nothing to do with Call of Duty.

I agree with this. I DM'd in all the Quakes, and now I'm not 14 anymore. I like squads and teamwork and tactics. If I had spent the last decade and a half still just mindlessly running a route in a map I'd memorized JUST to get a kill before my quad damage expired, I'd be ashamed of myself.

Oh, and seriously Fail, if you cut your teeth on the Quake games, and you think you could hang in a twitch based shooter today with todays youth, well, I'd like to be there to watch that hubris get annihilated if and when it ever goes on.

I dont have any good images coming to mind when I think of anyone sitting infront of a computer playing video games :p I just assume you're all fat lazy slobs, or scrawny lazy slobs, one of the two ;)

I played a little bit of UT, and a ton of CS (1.3 as well, so I know bunny hopping). These games don't do it for me anymore. Bought COD4 and only played for a few hours. Waited for a few releases and then I bought BFBC2 and only played that for a few hours. I think I'm done with these modern shooters. :(

I think its very easy to get bored with shooters in general.

Fail, it sounds like you put a real premium on gaming skills. That's totally fine, but many of us have a lots of other things going on, and gaming is a casual recreational activity for us. You have to understand that more casual players get really frustrated trying to compete with players like you. See, while you're busy honing your mousing skills, I'm usually writing software for work or spending time with my family.

I played a bunch of twitch shooters back in the day, but when I tried to jump back into Unreal Tournament, I had a splitting headache within 5 minutes from trying to keep up with the bunny-hopping. I still get a headache after too much BF3, it just takes a lot longer. ;)

you only die ultra fast in Quake if you're bad or completely outmatched by your opponent.

here's commentary from a top QL player on his thinking through a 1v1 match. QL 1v1 is as much decision making, item control, and map control as it is about being able to execute good aim and reaction.

I would like a medal of honor allied assault or cod1 with updated graphics of today. A good world war 2 shooter that requires a lot of skill but not too realistic in movement. Arcade/twitch shooter. To me world war 2 was the best era. Modern is not as great and gets boring quick. Vietnam was the most boring of any era since it was all just camping. I wouldn't mind a quake 5 though ;).

I want that futuristic FPS game that the old Infinity Ward team wanted to make, that one would probably be really good, probably better than BF and CoD combined.

I think its very easy to get bored with shooters in general.

This is true for me, especially multiplayer ones where the number of maps are limited. I've been playing BF3 every night since its release, but this weekend I haven't played a single game of BF3 at all. Just felt like I should take a break after playing the same few maps over and over again.

Last I heard, many of them from IW came together and started a new developing company. Can't remember their name, but anyone knows what are they up to?

Yeah, I will openly admit the only time I really play online shooters these days is when I'm procrastinating from doing actual work :p

"Casual gamers and little kids are playing these modern warfare games, they don't know how hard it was!"

"Quake was great, it was simple and you didn't need to look for where the enemy is. Click and shoot! You miss, you die! Kids don't know these days!"

These two statements contradict each other. Yes, I get twitch games requiring skill but you can't complain about modern games these days. The complexity is much more than 8 weapons and power-ups. You still need to memorize spawn locations or generally have a macro-understanding of the game to succeed.

I play Quake Live, have all of the Quake games and played Quake 3 avidly. There's a genre for that, and people still play those games. There will be other games made to fit that twitch gameplay, but honestly game developers make games where the majority of people will be found. Bills got to be paid.

Nostalgia all you like, but it won't change the fact that your gaming peers prefer something else.

Its always funny how people talk about fps games as if they were the greatest thing to ever play them, but they never post any videos or links to their rankings on ladders or overall statistics.

When I played Black Ops everyone I came across claimed to have had a 2.5 kdr... then you look at their stats and that 2.5kdr was more like .67 and most didnt even have a 1:1 win to loss ratio in matches ffs.

which is why I find it funny when people bash the newer games as not requiring any skill. They do require a skill its just not the skill you have so that makes the game(s) bad in your opinion. I got my fps start playing the original Rainbow Six on pc and tend to like the more realistic shooters as compared to hitting someone 5 times and they just run around the corner to the next armor or health powerup. that never made games like Quake wrong to me it just made me not want to buy and play them. If you do not like the current trend of the "modern warfare" themed fps games then feel free not to buy them. I can assure you that the developers arent going to base their future releases off a whiny forum post as opposed the model they have been going with that has made them large amounts of money.

Respawn Entertainment.

They won't say.
