Don't get mad at me, I'm not the one that said people waiting in line for an iPhone are weirder than ever.

This is the fifth time in as many years that Apple fans are lining up by the thousands to buy the new iPhone model, and it's mad as ever. With shrines to the late Steve Jobs still on display, Apple Stores from London to Sydney opened their doors to cheers on Friday as people who'd been waiting outside for hours, some of them days, rushed in to be the first to upgrade.

I don't get why idiots feel the need to stand in a line just to get what amounts to a "Status Symbol" that has lost its status over the years. Just preorder the damn thing and be on your merry way.

Well my coworker is in New Orleans for a bachelor party this weekend and tried to get his phone delivered to him down there. Unfortunately its not so he is going to the Apple store down there and getting another one... now that's crazy..

... are funny
... are devoted
... are crazy?

I bought my iP4 at ATT shortly after release (or the first day available at AT&T) and I didn't wait more than 30 minutes. Why wait days camping out in front of a store?

Yeah, like the same fools who camped out to see Star Wars Episode 1.

eh... that's the way Geeks(or people in general) are. Especially with desirable gadgets like iOS devices that are usually hard to find for months after launch... they can command a pretty high price tag online.

Hell, almost a year after the Wii launched, I still could find one in a store. I could, however, get one on ebay with almost a 50% markup from retail.

I wouldn't wait hours outside of a damn store for anything outside of some ridiculously revolutionary product that would have a limited run. Not for a phone that will be mass produced for years to come.

You just don't get it, it's an Apple product, not just that, it's an iPhone, it's so awesome, I just knew I (the wife) had to get one (so I did as well to save on having two totally different data packages), and now that the 4S is out I was all giddy with excitement, so we marched straight down to best buy and got Galaxy S2's (on launch day), because I was bored of the same s#*t in new clothing.

it'll be mass produced but the demand will outstrip the supply for the short term. pre-orders are likely months out on delivery (if the previous releases are anything to go by and figures are saying this is the most ordered launch) and resell prices will be at least double and possibly even quadruple for the first month.

I'm sure some people might feel like getting one for a status symbol, but that canard is so old by now it's ridiculous that people post it so often on these boards. that's the last reason the majority of those people are standing in line.

This just shows that there really is a "cult of Apple". People with shrines? Get a life people. If Apple sold petrified poop in a bag I bet there would be Apple diehards waiting in line for that too.

Drove past the AT&T store before it opened and there was just 1 kid waiting out there freezing his ass off. I kept driving and went to get some breakfast. I came back a short while before they opened and was the 4th person in line. Once they opened I was out of there in less than 15min with my new status symbol.
I like my gadgets and was due for an upgrade on my cell plan, so whatever haters.

Now..

What would REALLY make this interesting, is a survey of how many of those people buying 4s phones are also from Occupy Wallstreet & all their satellite groups.

:D

Anyone who stands in line for a gadget of any kind when they either could have just pre-ordered or waited a week to get it when there aren't any lines is mentally retarded - no exceptions.

I dont have an iphone yet, and would want one, but Im too cheap to more more than $200 on a phone. Question is which is better iphone and android's phone? P.S. why decide to name Iphone4S instead of Iphone 5.

Lol nice. I had to jump through a million hoops to buy mine. Only online upgrade option were iPhones, phone rep said I had to buy the SGSII "online only," yet they have a "Press 9 if you would like to buy an iPhone 4S!" I tried pressing "10" to punch them in the dick. No luck. :(

I waited overnight for the PS2. I waited 15 hours for the Xbox 360, and I waited overnight for the Wii. The main reason for waiting in line so long was for the social experience. It's ALWAYS been a great time in my experience - you get to meet some crazy, cool, and entertaining people - and I'd totally do it again.

With regards to the iPhone - it's just another electronic gadget that a ton of people want. It's no more or less ridiculous than people waiting in line for anything else at all (save for soup lines or any similar type of deal ;) )

I still just can't wrap my mind around religious devotion to a corporation.

We've seen this with Harley too. Like Apple, even if they just take a giant crap and put a bow on it, the faithful line up to dig out the corn pieces... unbelievable.

This is just a fucking phone for christs
sakes!!!! I can understand if this is the first phone ever. The world is full of stupid ass people and these apple products always! I repeat always attract them in groves!!!

Wait in line for hours for new iPhone
Realize it's in no way different than your current iPhone
?????
Profit!

Only if Steve Jobs pooped it, and it was certified that it came out of him.

I don't think Tim Cook's poop would sell very well as he has yet to prove himself. I think you'd be able to sell bags of shit belonging to the iPhone engineering team for a decent margin, though.

Had been waiting for new Android phones, but not excited by many. Have the iTouch and iPad, like those, so decided to go with iPhones as our contract is up and our Droid Eris phones are showing their age.

Wife ordered the iPhone 4S from Verizon's website first day they were taking orders. FedEx tracking shows out for delivery right now, so we will have them tonight. No need to wait in line - I don't get why people do that. Maybe they think it makes a cool story, "I waited in line for 17 days!" In reality, everyone is probably hearing these stories thinking "You're an idiot - just preorder online and get on with your life"

*long inhale* I love the smell of hyperbole on the internet. If this was anything other than an Apple product there probably wouldn't be all the posturing to the contrary. I waited in line half hour for an electronic device because I am mentally retarded. Ok. Hey wait.... Isn't this a tech website?

Just heard an interview on the radio in Dallas and a guy going by the name of iJustin was waiting in line at the apple store and want going to buy anything.
How much more proof do you need to see that apple fans are weird?

Yeah, that is weird. Your right Apple diehards are friggin weird. Sorry I took some of this personally. I dont even own a Mac.

The pre-orders are months out? Funny, everyone I know has been giddily watching their package get tracked to their front door. But what do the shipping companies know?

There's no reason to go stand in line at a store for hours, and certainly not days.

They need to send Triumph the talking dog out to do to these guys what he did to the SW:Ep1 people.

Day one mentality I just don't get, whether it's a movie, a video game/system, or a phone. Something like a sporting event/concert I can get because there will be exactly ONE of that event, but all these other things? wait a week or two and just walk up and buy a ticket, PS4, or iPhone4.5

iPhone releases, WoW expansion releases, gaming releases, everything this eg. virtually a digital crap that no one really needs, drives people to basically stand several days in front of store to get it first. It's a big fail otherwise, because these things wont make your life better.

Apple pushes this because it builds future demand. People look at those lines and assume that it must be miraculous for people to be that excited by it. Apple die-hards are a HUGE portion of Apple's advertising push.

Wait, let me see if I have your claim right, people will pay 2-4 times the retail price to get one a month or two early but it's not because it's a status symbol? Why then, does it cure cancer or something?

It makes ZERO difference whether you get it on day 1 or day 2. It just shows that you stood in line for hours or days for something completely and absolutely trivial and is a sad testament to their lives.

I agree, I waited in line 8 hours for the Xbox 360 (52/52 in line WOOT) and it was fun! I got to talk to a bunch of people about new games and old games and we exchanged gamertags and kept in touch. I also like to stand in line at Black Friday since our Thanksgiving celebrations don't end till 2am anyway.

Speaking of smell, What is worse than a a bunch of Apple fans standing in line? A bunch of Andriod fans standing in line (you can smell the BO from miles away). There isn't a shower in Mom's basement after all.

Unfortunately it makes the 6 o'clock news!!!

On CNN this morning there were interviews with apple fanbois standing in line.

1. Android fans don't stand in lines, we sit at home and wait for the package to come to us.

2. The BO is most likely from all the red meat we eat, it's a known fact Android fans are largely carnivores.
