Apple's 'Let's Talk iPhone' Keynote Liveblog

Bezant, you can't talk to wikipedia.

You can tell Siri to set a reminder for you to do something when you leave somewhere. It will set up a digital fence around that area geographically, so when you leave those borders, you're reminded to do what you told it to remind you to do. It does a lot, apparently.

How is siri different from wikipedia?

Yeah, like Triple B said. Basically you can do things like hit a microphone icon, then say 'Remind me to call my wife when I leave work' and the phone uses GPS to then know that you've left work, and it knows who your wife is because you've previously labelled her I guess.

Or say 'What am I doing friday' and it brings your calendar for that day, then say 'schedule a lunch with bob at 2' and it'll put 'Lunch' on that day at 2 for you.

What a crock of shit. Year and a half wait for this? I think they just made my choice of whether to go android a lot easier.

Well

if anything

All the Sprint-ers are probably dropping a load in there pants as now they can get the IPhone 4s...

like the ipad2, this is just a step to fleece you pockets of more money until the next release where a few more "features" will be added in the 5 version

do not miss my iphone 4 one bit after going to my Galaxy S2...cant see the reason to look at an apple product ever again

I don't understand how exactly this is fleecing anyone. I had a two year contract with AT&T which ended earlier this year. There was no reason for me to buy an iPhone 4 yet as it was obvious that not too much later there would be a new release. I've now skipped two generations of iPhones (3GS/4). I don't know anyone that buys an iPhone and upgrades before their contract is up. Anyone who does obviously has the money and the desire to do so. I wouldn't call that fleecing by any stretch of the imagination. Wait, no, that's not true. It's the same as saying restaurants are taking advantage of hungry people.

I cant believe there wasn't an Iphone 5! Atleast they did well with the updated 4s model...Not worth getting if you already have an Iphone 4 though.

The amazing bit is natural language processing/AI agent in a handset.

Kind of like Watson on Jeopardy. It wasn't the database of facts that made Watson impressive, it was understanding natural human language and taking action on it.

Siri is the coolest feature talked about at this event. I wouldnt call it earth shattering yet, but i think its a direction we are going in regards to voice control.

i get how using your voice will make it easier to do various things, but hearing it talk back to you is going to be wierd. im interested in seeing how reliable it really is. right now its just a slick tech demo.

itll be itneresting to see if this comes to other phones. Microsoft is heavily invested in voice and speech recognition and if thier bing voice search service is any indication, id say they wont be far behind with a similar capability.

Yeah, ok. Android phones are totally innocent in this regard

I think you guys should sit in a Ford equipped Sync car. Sure there have been some bugs with it, but it works incredibly well for music.

You could be surprised how many people drive without making playlists looking for that one song in a list of 50,000 songs all while taking their eyes off the road. Voice recognition allows you to find it in half the time.

Like someone said with Watson the ability to understand voice commands is huge. Hopefully it isn't buggy at launch.

Siri sounds pretty amazing, will be looking for the upcoming reviews. If it works as advertised, pretty incredible stuff on a phone.

Oh wait, almost forgot the obligatory Android, HO! ;)

The day Android won.

Couldn't have said it better  There is a new king in town & he isn't suing everyone left and right :D Engadget fans aren't even fooled this time around. Good run Apple, but "Everything That Has A Beginning Has An End."

So let me get this straight

There are numerous different versions of android based devices and all of them cause market confusion. Want to see, ask a retail employee what his most asked question is and I bet it will be "what android device is the best"

Look at the Motorola devices. Overheating issues with the Droid X and before anyone could figure out the specs you had the Droid 3/Droid 2 Atrix etc. Same with other providers.

I can promise you if you lumped all the Android devices together you would have a statistic that pales in comparison to iPhone quality control.

What happens when people say "my droid 2 is a piece of shit" they probably go with an iPhone because naturally they don't want another piece of shit phone.

What is the 2nd most complaint you hear with the Android phones

BATTERY LIFE.

It sucks on all of them.

And before the fanboy comments come out this is the phone I am rocking

In blue too.

I want you to realize I own both an iPhone & a Droid X. Neither phone has caused me any issues, but great experiences & at the end of the day, it isn't about AMD or Nvidia, Intel or AMD, or Apple & Android. It's all about the underdog getting his due. That is exactly what happened today.

No it doesn't. My Nexus S gets good battery life, as did my OG Droid. Also when doing your comparison keep in mind the screen is the biggest battery drain. Comparing massive 4.3" screens to a tiny 3.5" screen isn't exactly a fair comparison. You take a hit to the battery to have a bigger screen. Fortunately, if you want longer battery life there are still plenty of smaller screen Android devices out there. Choice is awesome :)

The amazing bit is natural language processing/AI agent in a handset.

Ah, but it isn't in a handset, though. The natural language processing is all done on a server. No data connection, no Siri. Still cool, but it's more of just a step ahead of what others already have than something revolutionary or innovative, which is what I think people were expecting. I can already say "navigate to <whatever>" on Android, and could since the OG Droid, for example. Siri's voice commands look more flexible than what Android has, but after ~2 years you would kind of expect that.

Also, voice commands are kind of boring. Talking to your phone is generally slower than just doing whatever it is you want. In a hands-free environment is where it shines and that is where Siri could really be awesome, but of course we'll see how well it holds up under real world testing and not a demo.

The iPhone 4S is just playing catch up... Siri is an improvement to an already existing funtionality. Its Apples way of adding "magic", taking something that exists, and tries to perfect it.

There arent any hardware changes that are significant. I've owned a Motorolla Atrix since June, dual core, voice to text, 16gb internal + the addition of a mirco SD not to mention i can own multiple cards and swap for content.

The iphone trails android on one fundamental flaw (in my opinion) and that is usability. I can plug my Atrix to any computer, and instantly share my pics, music, videos, files, etc without software installs or Syncronization. I can hook it up directly to HDMI or use DLNA to share pics and vids. I can plug my phone into the USB port of a TV and play back content.

I can go on forever.

I owned the 3g and the 3gs - saw no reason to continue with IOS once I had my hands on the 2.1 Droid. Gone through the Motorolla Milestone (canadian Droid), HTC Desire Z, and now the Atrix.

The Iphone 4S should be a wake-up call to those using iphones...Apple plays catch up, and claims innovation...

Another winner! Let the pre-orders begin.

STILL the best smartphone money can buy.

when i saw the iphone 4s announced my heart skipped a beat what a piece of shit, everything i hated about the iphone is now back and there for another 12 months.

I'm very surprised they didn't just call it iphone 5. I know two ppl that will not be buying it just because it's called iphone 4s instead of iphone 5.

/facepalm

havent found an answer yet, but can siri be activated using a keyword/phrase? I saw the demo and it shows that you have to hit the mic to start, i.e. like all other things...

I'm hoping that you could assign a unique keyword/phrase that you can use to activate it w/o ever touching the phone...
