Microsoft's 'Gmail Man' Ad

Your right but i'm not. Sorry you only get the wit with pay. I'd add a paypal donations link but that might push the joke too far. Then again being unemployed....
I could also point out Firefox has spell check. :D

ftfy:D

Google defense force isn't going to like this one - damn - bit. :p

The only thing to defend is that MS compared its paid, enterprise product against google's free, consumer product. Google Apps for Business is both cheaper than Office 365 and doesn't have ads - hence why MS had to go with a stupid comparison. Hotmail has ads, too.

If the information gathering is really that bad it means that Google is poisoning its own well. What advertiser wants to pay for their ads to be broadcast to the wrong people, for the wrong reasons that could potentially turn off a customer by unintentionally stigmatize their brand?

Ok, hotmail has ads too but do they snoop through your mail to target ads? Just wondered...

They've been doing that with TV and Radio for decades...

I barely notice the ads in Gmail, Hotmail on the other hand has huge banner ad.

Its totally true... just been trying to think where should I go to try another email address...

This is probably the coolest ad I've seen for a Microsoft product, they really need to do something like this for Windows Phone and push it hard. GmailMan, just love it. But I wonder if there might not be a LawyerMan lawsuit coming down. They are using the Gmail logo, might be a problem there.

How much are Google Apps For Business.

Sorry, was it a good video? IE blue screened when I tried to watch it. So I rebooted and then it said something about the registry being corrupted. So I tried to reset it to an earlier date and found out some virus were hiding in it. So after the normal Fdisk format and reinstall of windows I am now back but have to wait for everything to update.

aww somebody got hurt :c

Pretty funny. Now, why is Microsoft attacking Google when Apple is the one that makes fun of them!?

If you count April's Fools Google fired first. They had a press release saying that Contoso abandoned office for Google Apps.

Its scarey how many people have no issue with this. I guess that's the world of facebook we live in now.

No matter what your opinion of Microsoft, they make some very valid points in this movie.

That is true, but those that aren't completely naive already know we have no privacy at all once we put something online.

I found the ad hilarious. Very well done, seeding FUD into the masses. In reality, it doesn't apply at all to the decision to go with Google Apps for business or Office 365, but in advertising, that doesn't matter.
Rather topical, as at work we are finally switching from a lame pop3 provider to a reasonable email system. Looking at both Google Apps and Office 365, but it looks like we will probably go with Office 365, even though it is twice the cost ($5/month/user vs $10/month/user, or something like that).
The deal killer for Google? Support. Lets say the owner of the company can't get to her email, and is the only user with a problem. We can't call Google to figure out what is going on.
I love Google Apps (free version), and Google Mail & Calendar would be ideal for me with my Android phone, but I can't really argue with the support issue.

Late to the party, but brilliant! Makes me think of something I saw in someone's sig on the forums... Think it said something like...

"If the service you're getting is free, then you're the product they're selling."

Wish I could recall the username, sorry :(.

One of the things I find most ironic about that video is that its hosted ... on YouTube! ;)

Oh and I don't care what Google does in this regard. I am adept at ignoring their ads. Plus if I have anything personal to discuss with family and friends ... I go see them and talk with them in person. Or if that's not convenient I call them on the phone (which is probably monitored by some obscure branch of our Government).

Seriously! Anything Google gets from me is highly random. So if they really want to scan for keywords, I say they can go right ahead.

Haha, that was pretty good.

I don't mind contextual ads though. They're more useful than the generic ads they replace.

Its how they give you those ads thats the issue. Of course they are more useful they are spying on you to make sure of this.

Still though im sticking with my gmail until someone makes something thats really better.

I agree with what is said about Google and their practices, but how does Microsoft Office 365 solve this? I stopped paying attention to Microsoft Office past 2007.

Office 365 is not the same as the desktop version of office. It is a service from microsoft for you to get copies of office. you pay a small monthly fee per user and you get an exchange server, share point server, lynx server and a copy of office for that person's desktop. Whenever a new version of Office is released you are upgraded to that version, so with this program you will always have the current version of office. So their fix there in that way i guess is to charge you for the service. The other fix is just to not look at your email. Hotmail doesn't scan all of your emails and target you with ads.

Hotmail has ads yes, but not targeted ads. that is the problem. Gmail looks through all of your emails and stuff and keeps a list of stuff about you to target you with based on the content of your incoming and outgoing emails. Hotmail just has random ads being displayed off to the side.

But are they reading your mail? That's the big question.

While they don't show ads to businesses in their emails, they could make a lot of money snooping into business emails for what businesses spend their money on, or even innovative strategies.

Any business with half a brain wouldn't be using Gmail for anything important, but scary thing is, many do i am sure.

I have had people in our company suggest using Gmail for our email and if they can have their company email forwarded to their Gmail account, i just laugh.

That "viral video disguised as an advertisement" was definately creepy as hell, not funny at all.

I can sense in that video that Microsoft is still pissed off as hell that it did not get a piece of the advertisement pie.

Hmm.. this all makes sense now. I was wondering why the hell I kept getting ads for spam recipes in the banner. I know gmail isn't my main email but damn google.. you don't have to sicken me into changing over.

Wow. Talk about the hit that sent Gmail to the floor!!!

Kudos MS.

(not that Gmails out for the count....but they're definitely hugging the mat with this one)

You say that as if MS isn't looking through all your emails. Hint, it's on their servers, they've "seen" your data. You are also making assumptions about how gmail's ads work - last I heard it was just what was currently shown meaning they didn't keep a list of stuff about you.

GMail shows ads I might actually find helpful, Hotmail shows random ads. MS needs to step up their game is all that means.

Clever Indeed!

But who cares? Google provides me with email, services, the best phone OS I've ever used the list goes on and on. In exchange for what? Creating an ad profile to better service me?

Google isn't reading my mail to benefit anyone except me, and by proxy themselves.

I just find it silly that people are in arms about this...
