All your servers are belong to us. The lulz just keep rolling in.

A government official who declined to be named said earlier in the day that the F.B.I. was actively investigating the Lulz Security group and any affiliated hackers. The official said the F.B.I. had teamed up with other agencies in this effort, including the Central Intelligence Agency and cybercrime bureaus in Europe.

So, if Lulz hacks websites to take them down for laughs, that is not okay. But if the FBI takes entire servers that host legitimate websites, that is okay. Makes complete sense.

Everyone should actually read this article. Basically the feds came to the data center during the night when nobody was there and had no idea what they were doing. They were searching for a server using a certain IP and thought they narrowed it down. They were clueless and took multiple boxes from different racks and knocked a whole lot of innocent people's websites offline. They don't seem to really have a clue what they are doing.

From the article:

"DigitalOne provided all necessary information to pinpoint the servers for a specific I.P. address, Mr. Ostroumow said. However, the agents took entire server racks, perhaps because they mistakenly thought that “one enclosure is = to one server,” he said in an e-mail."

The FBI is clueless and hurting many more innocent people than Lulz Sec has.

DigitalOne had no employees on-site when the raid took place. The data center operator, from which DigitalOne leases space, passed along the information about the raid three hours after it started with the name of the agent and a phone number to call.

kind of hard to relay that information without any employees on site.

You'd think the FBI would hire people who actually know that the intrawebs aren't just a series of tubes . Seriously, you can't hire a construction worker to perform heart surgery. Tardstars.

Yes, the FBI does it for our benefit. To make sure our minds are not corrupted by the evil that is out there. Come on,admit it, don't you feel a lot safer knowing these criminal torrent sites are coming down. If the FBI has the financial resources to do this for the RIAA/MPAA etc , then serious crime must be down, and they have to much time on their hands.

I say blame the fuckheads doing illegal shit that made it neccessary to get a warrant for "server rack #1 - 6"

FBI = retards

People at fault here = The shitheads doing illegal shihead stuff

I know. However, just a little bit of a double standard that it's okay for the government to take down websites by accident ( they were probably just too stupid/lazy to care ) but if LulzSec does it, it's illegal.

They want digital crimes to be considered as serious as real ones, and yet they are lackadaisical with their warrant service and confiscation. This reminds me of ICE taking down 84,000 websites and then committed libel against them by claiming they were child porn sites. They get away with a simple "oops haha".

If the FBI had a warrant to seize a car, they can't take every one in the parking lot.

They need to be held to a higher standard. This is just DOJ-endorsed smash-and-grab.

They don't know which was which. For all they know the digital fingerprints might be on all the servers in the room. Be glad they didn't take them all. The main problem with the FBI and law enforcement in general is that when the company goes to retrieve their servers, they usually will have been physically destroyed.

So these guys won't get their racks back. And no reimbursement.

I thought Lulzsec was cute at first, but when you push the envelope you hurt innocent people. They need to go down.

^ you just showed how its not a double standard...

LulzSec does it on PURPOSE to cause harm/fear/hysteria/extortion...
FBI does it by ACCIDENT...
If they didn't take them down by mistake/ACCIDENT (which I'm sure being human it happens) then only bad people would of been affected by this raid...

P.S. I was responding to SilverSlivers post but people got in between our posts lol and no EDIT

If the FBI has always had the power to fuck everyone over at will, why blame the hackers?

If a criminal hides in a nursery, you don't just bomb the whole place and go "yeah we got him!"

Hardly.

i hope i never become a hostage and the FBI shows up. FBI orders one of them is the gun man the rest are hostages ok just shot them all that way we know we got the bad guy and then the rest of the people in the world will be safe!

That's what they do. In Washington, DC there is an elderly couple that gets drug raided every year because of a computer error. They were like in their 80's and have never done anything; but the SWAT team knocked down their door yearly.

I used to build high end car stereo systems at a shop in the 90's. A buddy of mine that was 100% more geekier than me decided he wanted to spend $7,500 on some gear for his car. His car after being modded looked similar to a known drug dealer's car.

Police impounded his car, kicked his ass (remember scary geek type with pens in his pocket), and used hammers to destroy every piece of car stereo in his car. They said they were looking for drugs and they didn't have the budget for a drug dog. Went to court and they went by insurance company estimates and replaced his stuff with PYLE and Legacy car stereo equipment. About $300 worth I might add.

But the point is that when you let bad people near you or give the impression that you're in cahoots with them, you're subject to this type of treatment. It's just like the guy in NY that got his door busted down for child porn and found out it was his neighbor leeching off his wireless router. Another ass kicking and broken doors. Bet he secures that router now!

This could get messy XD

yes because taking a lot of servers is equal to killing everyone in a room to get one guy

More likely they wanted to be thorough and don't give a flying fuck about innocent casualties. Authorities, I love them......to poop on.

Wow no-one was on site? If they knew the feds were coming wouldn't they have someone there to show exactly what to take?

Also I work at a data-center and I cant imagine what kind of low budget center they run because there needs to be someone on site .. at least one person.

DigitalOne are just colocating servers in someone else's datacenter. They couldn't be expected to have someone "on site" in a datacenter hundreds of miles from where they do business. Everyone who was adversely affected by this ought to sue the government for their irresponsibility. If the FBI had to pay out a few hundred thousand dollars in restitution every time they did something this moronic, it wouldn't happen anymore.

The need for onsite support is dictated by their SLA. If their SLA is not adequate for you, pay a competitor more money. They are probably a cheap alternative and with that comes cost cutting measures. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

In any case, I'm sure if they had someone onsite the FBI would have acted totally different... right? I'm sure they didn't raid them at around 3am explicitly because they knew no one would be there.

Because it is illegal, by your logic, rape would be okay as long as it was "fur the lulz" of it.

Huh? What are you going on about? His logic is rape would still be illegal if done by cops.

It pained me to continue your really shitty analogy.

Wow, so what Lulz needs to do now is rent servers in every data center in the country and then get the FBI to take them down / destroy them. This should be entertaining. Doubly so if they can hijack some government servers.

anybody been to their irc channel? They sound like a bunch of 12 years old reminds me of the irc days pre efnet/dalnet DoS wars (2001 or so)

once they get one of these shitbags and he rolls the rest will be dropping faster than anthony weiners pants in a yahoo chat room.

LOL.. what happens when you screw around with the authorities. Act like your untouchable and than get touched :D:p

No sympathy and as for the data center goes. I'm sure they will be drafting up a policy after that that if anyones reported doing anything wrong their servers removed. LULZ

Sucks.. Doesn't it? Bet next time they'll think before acting on the LULZ and hacking every website they deem fit to. People like these why we cant have nice things.
