So I finished DNF last night and the game isnt terrible

Wait, so is it 5 second loads from the SSD or from the RAMdisk? :p I had TW1 on a RAMdisk and the time it took to fade to the load screen was longer than the actual load time itself in most cases. Its a pain when you start getting huge games though. Luckily TW1's main data file was just below 4gb, so fit nicely onto the freeware RAMDisk.

SSD, took 5 seconds.

If one loaded unto a Ramdisk, the difference would not be noticed.

I mention it only for those without an SSD, and want an alternative to long boot times.

I feel like the game had a lot of potential and good ideas and was just very poorly executed. I understand that FPSes are in general linear, however DNF seems to take it to a new level. I felt like I was in the same winding cooridor that was the same width as every other corridor 90% of the time. Also, often if you go through a door and progress through the level you cannot go back.

The dialogue and atmosphere is very true to duke nukem, I just felt that most of the level design and control scheme stunk pretty bad. I felt like there was a lot of filler, esp with the driving levels.

I also felt like there were a remarkable number of places where you were walking around with no bad guys.

I do really enjoy the boss fights though, I miss how new games don't have bosses most of the time.

Personally I would give the game a 6/10. It is quite playable and actually has some good ideas, but the level design is abysmal the controls are sluggish and lots of it seems to be pretty boring.

Did anyone else feel like the strip club level was added just to show digital boobs. There have been strippers in the previous games, but I always felt like they were integrated into a pre-existing level and did not have an entire non-combat level centered around them.

Well i played d4e over the weekend. If the game been released 4 years ago, it would have gotten better scores.

It felt like I was playing a old game where graphics and stuff is a bit dated.

What I notice about the game is they did similar type of puzzles per level and not mix around it.

Some of the jokes in it was great. There was something totally missing from the game that was the random strippers in duke 3d.

Sure there was that dream stage of a strip club but in duke 3d, there was strippers everywhere.

also where was the hand animation waving money in front of girls.

it was a decent game prob about 8.0 rating if it came out 4 years ago.

Rented it today, absolutely horrendous aiming and movement on xbox... utter sh*t I actually stopped playing and returned it that's how bad it was.

Waiting over a decade for it.. It's turned out being like waiting for a decade for somebody to take a nasty diarrhea in your mouth.

Gotta be honest, it's an honest opinion that's, unfortunately, accurate.

"Hype" aside, just taking it for what it is without even attaching the Duke name to it, it's a bad game, period.

While disgusting in concept, I agree, ha ha.

Play it where it is supposed to be played, on the PC.

sigh, console people these days....

This was 14 years in the making? Yeesh.. they should have stopped at the first setback they had. How many times did they scrap the engine on this?

When was the first idea of this announced? Back in 07 I think?

Actually....almost a decade earlier....I believe it was 1998 they started initial work on DNF.

i couldn't deal with the load times so i checked online, it seems the game installs a dual core optimizer ( AMD ) even if you have an intel cpu. i uninstall this and load times where tons better for me.

Even if AMD I would think you would only need it on XP. Vista and 7 should already properly schedule cores. I remember this being released years ao for the K8 and it was an XP ssue IIRC

I just finished the game last weekend and imho, the game is not that bad. I did enjoy the game and if you're a fan of games like Serious Sam etc., you will certainly enjoy this one too.

I just finished DNF and although I enjoyed it .....to a point....it is still hard to imagine it took 12+ years to make that game. If that is the best that 3D Realms could do given the time and money they had then they are either incompetent or a bunch of crooks. The more I think about it I feel they just lucked out with D3D and when it came time for them to make another game they were unable to B.S their way through it. A one-hit wonder.

There is a DNF Timeline in the game under extras that you can look at. Youll find that the game was only actually being developed for about 2-3 years of the entire time it was "in development". The rest of the time it was financial/legal problems keeping it down. I'd say thats not bad considering it switched engines 2-3 different times.

Played the demo. Load times and movement/controls were fine on my rig.

The game would be at least twice as good with Doom Marine speed, no weapon carry limit, health packs instead of regen, PC style saves, and a $25 price point.

There was no way a game like this could live up to expectations, but those changes would have made up for most of the complaints. Nobody goes to Hooters for a great steak.

Well at least the $25 price point should be here in a few weeks based upon reviews.

It was probably a tough call for marketing. They expected to milk the early adopting DN fans and price it AAA, but that set expectations too high and doubled the vitriol. Reviews probably wouldn't have been so caustic if it was priced lower at launch and its sale price will now be driven even lower and sooner.

Plus, it sounds like they at least partially flubbed the console port, making the situation worse.

I wonder if fan mods could make the changes I suggested above.

I started playing the PC port last week and am very nearly finished with the single player.

The good:
* It's been too long since I played a shooter that actually gave me a minute to breathe and soak in the ambience. The pacing benefits tremendously.
* The gunplay's satisfying, and nearly all of the guns are useful in the right circumstances.
* The enemies are well-balanced, the environments are well-realized, and it's FULL of interactivity and easter eggs.
* The writing ranges from bearable to genuinely funny, most of the time.
* Defenses arguing that too many modern games have become barely interactive movies are well-founded. At least Duke does his own dirty work.
* The Incredible Shrinking Duke sections are fun and well-conceived.
* I LOVE the Mighty Foot driving sections.
* Most of the sound design is good to great.
* Kick-ass boss fights.

The bad:
* The level design is too linear, too much of the time.
* Too many puzzles, given the overarching nature of the game. Cut the number in half, and it'd be a lot stronger. (In the interest of full disclosure, I hated them in the Half-Life games just as much)
* Some of the writing's weak. Some of it's really weak.
* Many of the graphics are inconsistent in quality. Some pieces look nearly new; some look about on par with Quake 4; a few look earlier than that.
* The swimming sections are tense and have potential, but tend toward being frustrating.
* That fucking strip club dream sequence level, which feels like padding and throws off the game's momentum. The funny gags hidden throughout don't make up for it.
* There's a vein of ugly, humorless sexism in The Hive that doesn't suit this game well.
* The music's generally not memorable. I remember it being there, but almost nothing specific about it.
* Parts of the game feel like a retread of Duke Nukem 3D.

The ugly:
* Character animation and voice acting are inconsistent, and sometimes veer into territory that wouldn't be acceptable a decade ago.
* The Holsom twins are completely worthless - as characters, as plot devices, and even as eye candy.
* Why can't I tip the strippers? That's like shipping a game with Sean Connery and forgetting the Scottish accent!

The inconsistency of execution and some dated design and visual elements make for an uneven experience, but the good parts redeem it. I'd give it a solid 7/10 - no more, no less. The multiplayer's supposed to be a good time, but I haven't tried that yet. If only the system requirements were a bit lower for what you got.

Assuming Gearbox releases an SDK, that's a possibility. Someone mentioned that Gearbox basically took the latest version of UE3 and migrated DNF to it in the last year for the console ports, which makes sense and explains at least some of the problems experienced on the 360 and PS3. Unfortunately I don't know what their source for that info was, so it's not possible to verify that myself.

That's not surprising. I don't get why "everyone" seems to think they spent 12 years on the game so it should be excellent. They didn't spend all 12 years on this epic game that would take months to complete, that would be insane. They spent 12 years making one normal length game. A lot of people expected way too much. Personally, I'm going to wait until it's $30 or so before I buy it.
