Never shop when tired

So I got home late last night and was tired of my computer crashing. I also wanted to move to a larger display, but a 4:3 one. And oh look, someone has a slightly used 21." 4:3 monitor for $99. And 5770s are so cheap now, might as well go crossfire. And maybe my PSU is too weak, and those new X-series look really nice. Modular would be great too. And maybe a new SFF case since mine is pretty beat up....That wooden one on Newegg looks nice. And that's when I had to stop myself. I bought everything but the case ><

So here's my pro-tip: Never shop online in the middle of the night.
A.) You'll stay awake all night
B.) You'll buy stuff you never would have if you were in your right mind.

[tldr] My computer(see sig) has been freezing lately in MoW/Men of War:Assault Squad. It locks up, plays a really annoying sound, and the display changes to tan lines(dark/light alternating). Not sure what's causing it since other games run fine. I thought maybe it was the open-box 5770 I bought. Or maybe it was the PSU. I doubt its the motherboard/ram since I've replaced those, so I finally got fed up and decided to do an overhaul.

The loot:

ViewSonic VP2030b
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BWZOR6
Thought I ordered the 21.3" version but in the seller's comment it says:
"i have the VP2030b same monitor 1 inch smaller, excellent condition but not in original box" doh!

PowerColor 5770 & crossfire cable

Seasonic X660

I didn't get the best prices because of difficulties shipping to PO Boxes, so that was really frustrating. Searched all night for websites that would ship to me. Got the PSU from CircuitCity of all places(Buy.com was like $20-30 cheaper), 5770 from geeks.com(Newegg had one for like $20 less), and of course I saw tons of recently expired deals($80 5770s, $10 off coupons, etc.). Spent like 2 hrs just price matching.

Oh boy have I been guilty of staying up and eagerly wanting to purchase something lol. That's how I bought a new case. And it's how I bought my first 6950. Lol. Haha

Kind of like going grocery-buying while being hungry, you buy junk you would never have bought otherwise. Thanks for the fun story OP, one time I stayed up all night looking up broken Xbox 360s on eBay trying to find one that had the E74 error so it would be easy to fix, then in a spur of stupidity I just bought a random one that had a bunch of issues and was harder to fix.

I was this | | close to buying a 6950. Or a 6850, since I saw them for about $145 after rebate. But if I bought a 6950 I was going to have to buy an Accelero cooler to keep it quiet.

In the end I decided I'd chance it with the 5770 crossfire, hoping that my current one isn't the problem.

The 6950 is pretty quiet when on auto around 45% fan speed. Lol. I had 5770 crossfire prior to it. The 5770s combine are a pretty nice budget performer. They kick ass and scale well.

Hah I feel the pain. Some of my amazing purchases have been a case of 72 energy drinks that I didn't even like(then they ended up sending me another case of 72 for free on accident OH BOY), an acoustic guitar that I don't even know how to play, and registering a URL of an old LAN center that went out of business years ago.

Online shopping late at night is like drinking late into the night. You wake up the next morning wonder what the hell happened to all your money.

Definitely feel the pain. I bought a broken Ipod Touch 32gb that clearly said the screen was broken, but I thought I was getting a bargain. $150 down the drain.

Another "pro" tip...don't Ebay while drunk. I woke up one morning to find out I had won an auction for an Xbox 360 and several games. And the Xbox I had "won" was basically full retail price. Supposedly a friend of my dad's did the same thing...but bought a Harley. He rented a storage unit to hide it from the wife, rofl.

Excellent choice in games! :D Nice loot too, but yeah - lesson learned. ;)

haha, i did the exact same thing!! and don't shop when you're depressed either...

almost bought 3 IPS monitor, then i need another gpu... but then I need a bigger PSU... so might as well get SSD... ahhhhh

in the end, (only bought 2 instead), and save the rest of the list for the next build

I agree. I spent $1800 and patiently waited all week for the parts to show up. 60lbs of computer hardware from Newegg and my dumbass forgot the ram.

Don't make huge purchases at 3am, trust me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one like this lmao, ive done the exact same thing countless times.

I think another big thing is to not only not make purchases while tired but also when you are upset/depressed/exhausted.

You tend to look at these things and the excitement brings you out of that down feeling, so you decide to order it.

i can add don't buy when having a couple beers to that list.... my new water cooler is thanks to that.
