I see at bestbuy there is this for sale at $69
Creative Labs - Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro External Sound Card

The Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro is a small black box that connects to a desktop or notebook PC via USB to upgrade it to a THX TruStudio Pro entertainment system with 5.1 surround sound.?

That means plenty of noise and a sure fire way to enhance your current sound offering.

how would this compare to my realtek HD onboard sound?

I "only" have a 2.1 system, but the two speakers are reference speakers.
BX5a.

I have a good ear for music but a tiny budget.

but is it worth it to try this USB solution?

win7 x64 dual core
older processor, and with that onboard sound. sounds good as it is, but then I might not know...

thanks...freestone

i have no experience with this sound card but my guess is that it would be an improvement over your on-board. I think your money would be better spent on an internal sound card though, if that's an option.

I have an x-fi hd usb soundcard and it's definitely better than my onboard, but I chose external sound for convenience sake. I would recommend a cheap internal Asus Xonar DG if you don't mind internal cards.

I have the X-Fi HD also and highly recommend it. An external card is going to eliminate any possibilities of interference you may get with an internal card.
