SOYO 24" DYLM24D6 Official Thread

3. You can't run an HDMI to DVI cable from your console/hddvd/bluray to this monitors DVI, you'll get no signal

Note vagetto is trying to connect his XBOX, not a 360 to his monitor.
Plus this is WRONG. My 360 displays ALL GAME output fine on my non hdcp monitor. It requires no hdcp for games. However, it probably won't upscale DVD's to HD resolution though, but then again I never watch DVD's on my 360. Also if you have an ancient HD-DVD drive for the 360, they won't play in HD on a non hdcp connection (don't know if it'll just scale them down or completely refuse to play.)

Thanks for the reply!

Ouch this kinda stinks. That means it does not support the component's sync on green through a VGA cable?

I'm very worried about getting a VGA converter due to the extra processing and potential extra lag added. Any ideas regarding this?

Thanks!

I don't know about the component sync on green support because I used a converter that output a standard VGA signal. All of those adapters at dealextreme should do the conversion. Oh, the monitor will most probably not support 1080i on its VGA port as well since most interlaced signals are not supported by LCD monitors (requires them to buffer fields, whereas analog CRT's would just draw each field as it got it.) Anyways, from what I recall, the Xbox is so slow, it renders HALO at SD resolutions and upscales if you have an HD component connection, so the quality shouldn't be any better with 480p output or 720p output.

Just thought I'd share some recent images (as of about 10 minutes ago) displayed on my nearly 4-year old Soyo DYLM24D6, since this thread has stopped discussing how awesome this panel is and has become more of a tech support thread :)

Most probably because nobody can get these monitors new anymore and there are modern replacements with better PQ for approximately the same price. e.g. the Dell U2311H... though not exactly the same, it's 1080p rather than 1920x1200, but I would consider it a much superior monitor to the Soyo. But definitely the Soyo had a very beautiful, high quality panel that was a great deal in its time... (same panel as my LG L246wp for 1/2 the price, but with inferior electronics.)

BTW I still use my Soyo on my current game computer and use it as a display for my ancient non-HDMI Xbox 360.

I have 3 Dell U2311H's and their PQ is definitely not better than my Soyo, largely due to the viewing angle issues with IPS Glow, the only inherent problem with viewing angle shifting with my Soyo is red shift, which in comparison to the Dell's is a much less noticable than the IPS glow on the Dell's

Want me to upload a video to youtube showing you what happens when I connect my PS3 via HDMI > DVI to my Soyo? I'll do it right now if you want. I don't really care what you say in theory, because in reality you can't do it with this monitor. I've tried. It works on my friend's 24" Soyo TN Panel, but he has a Pearl model, not a Topaz-S which leads me to believe it's something to do with the different EDID information

Gotcha. Actually I'm not really interested in outputting HD from my original XBOX. I just want to use it with this monitor, and the VGA input would seem to be the only way.

I'd go the VGA converter route, but I'm afraid it will add lag time to the video signal.
Any experience with this?

Thanks!

I bought two, one died in 2 years and the other is still going strong. I was very unhappy with the 50% failure rate.

There wasn't a 50% failure rate. I believe if you search this thread it was mentioned to be around 10%.

I believe I went through 4 panels back in 2007 before getting a good one.

Unfortunately, my Soyo recently failed and I'm not sure what to replace it with.

I just wish getting a replacement power supply was still available.

Oops. I was really meaning to reply to silent-circuit who stated that the lack of HDCP was the cause of the Soyo display problems with digital output from game consoles and just used your message since I was replying to the front part of it as well. Sorry about that.

You are correct in saying that the Soyo does not display HDMI output from the PS3 and the Xbox 360 properly.

Yesterday morning the monitor would display " digital input" then go black and come back on and do it again. I could shut down my machine and when I turned it back on it would be fine. Last night the power led went out and now the monitor is dead.

I'm so bummed and looking for a modern replacement. Any suggestions?

The PSU of the monitor went out, my guess. I bought a spare power unit awhile back just in case something like that happens. If you want to replace the power unit, you can buy mine...I am not interested in keeping it beyond its inital death (if it ever happens). I think I paid something like $30 for it. This is a revised power unit that will last so much longer than the original board, I was told. In the middle of this thread, there are posts about this power unit. LMK...

Would the power supply have caused the flashing " digital" thing as well?

I just went and got some supposedly 24 inch acer from staples and Im not diggin it at all.

Bad caps on the PSU are the most likely cause of this flashing.

Is there a tutorial around somewhere on how to change the thing?

Not on this particular model/brand, but I was able to revive my Samsung SyncMaster 204T by changing two bulging caps on the power circuit board.

Im broke from buying that monitor today. If youre in no hurry Ill prolly buy the thing form you as soon as I get some coin.

The funny part is I think I have a friend who has a soyo that bought his at the same time as mine and used it a lot less that might trade me for the 189 dollar tn I just bought.

Mourn with me, brothers. My Soyo just died. I was playing a video game and I heard a loud pop and smelled heavy electrical-fire smell and the screen died.

I have a 1920x1080 Samsung (22") monitor that keeps me alive, but it feels so... small compared to the beauty that was my Soyo. What do you think are the odds of fixing it? What monitor would you all recommend to replace it?

My panel just died this week too. I wish I had bought a new power supply when they were available.

I am going to try to wait for the new Samsung PLS displays as they sound like a good replacement. If they don't get released soonish I may get an HP ZR24W or Asus PA246Q.

Those whose displays died -- open them up and check for clearly damaged components, replacing like with like. If you're on [H] there's a fairly good chance you can handle basic soldering, or at least know someone who can.

mines still going since 2007, 10 hrs daily definitely a beater...

im worried its about to meet its fate hearing all these sudden deaths

.

I never knew that it had the same panel. I used to use an LG L246WP as my main monitor before I sold it. Great monitor. I picked it up at the time from Circuit City, it was the display model, last one they had. The retail price was somewhere around 500USD if I recall correctly. But because it was the display model, the salesman gave it to me for $215! Granted, it was a little beat up and scratched because it was the display model. But the best part is that I returned it to LG for these reasons and they replaced it with a brand new one! So I got a new L246WP for $215. :p

I found this site while I was looking for a way to fix (3) soyo topaz s monitors I got for free. Someone listed them on craigslist and they had labels on them saying "bad power supply" I am hoping someone here can point me in the right direction on where to get a new one? I went to that Chinese site that has them but I do not know how to purchase through it. If someone here has one for sale that would be great. Thanks.

Me too. Nowhere to get these anymore.

I am trying to contact taobao to see how the heck I can purchase one. It says that they have them in stock but I just need to figure out how to purchase the dang thing.

I have Taobao's Hong Kong address if anyone wants it, please PM me for it. No phone number, though.

Edit: Hey, I went to look on Paypal account and got the info if anyone needs it, it's as follow:

The Soyo is 6ms, not 8ms

Isn't it true that you need to use an s-video output on a videocard -> CRT to get true input lag? VGA (iirc) won't give you accurate times on a CRT screen

edit: this may only be correct when trying to find input lag over interlaced resolutions, i.e. a CRT 480i TV

Allrighty, hopefully im not getting ripped off but I went to taobaogle.com and went through the steps to get the psu that way. They are supposed to get in touch with me to finalize the shipping payment. I will be the guinea pig on this so stay tuned, if it works I will let you all know. I dont want to give anyone misinformation and their hard earned money gets taken.

Coming up on three years here. While I guess I should be thankful that my PSU is still chugging along, I've developed some nasty burn-in. I tend to use Win7's feature of snapping windows to the left/right half of the screen, and often have Firefox in the left half several hours or more per day. Now, it appears the vertical scrollbar has burned in right near the center of the monitor. I've left it unplugged for 3-4 days at a time, and just did the "white screensaver" thing overnight last night, all to no avail.

Has anyone else run into this? Did you ever find a solution? Everything I read online claims LCD monitors are physically incapable of getting permanent burn-in, so I feel like there has to be some alternative to ordering a replacement.

FWIW, I've verified it's not the video card or the input, as I've tried both VGA/DVI and alternate sources.

Mine has some burn in as well, upper right corner from 5 icons on my desktop

No, this is not accurate.

I ordered a new power supply from taobaogle on april 20th, it arrived, much to my surprise, on may 2nd. I installed it today after soldering a new c14, and my monitor is back in action! There was also some burn in on my display, but the month or so that it was off while the psu was borked has fixed it.

two weeks is not bad at all. I bought a original replacement so hopefully i dont have to do anything to it but plug it in. i should have bought three but i was weary of letting that much money getting gone. oh well, if it fixes the one i can always order two more while i enjoy it.

well I got mine in from china, hooked it up and IT WORKS! i am really excited that i was able to fix it and the part came really quickly considering the distance it had to travel. it came with a plug to solder into the board and couldnt have been easier. I am going to order 2 more and do a step by step guide on my blog. hopefully it will help some people out. It will take me a few days to complete but if you want to check out the what is presently a crummy blog you can go to yourdiyguy. Thanks for all the helpful info I will try to add as much to the guide as possible to make it easy to follow.:D

How do you purchase the power supply?

Looks like it is at least $50+ risky purchase and complicated installation. Not sure if my soyo with 2 dead pixels is worth it...
