The PSP2 Is As Powerful As A PS3

We all know this is impossible with current tech. The PS3 draws how many watts at the wall?

The PS3 is just a PowerPC processor, with specialized cores attached to it, called SPE's. It's not hard to see a PSP2 with a PPC cpu, without the SPE's, since most games on the PS3 hardly used them anyway.

Though, most likely it's going to be a cell phone processor with a big focus on performance. I'd expect a price range of $400-$500. It won't ever sell.

We normally don't comment on handheld console stuff but this is just too funny to pass up. It seems Sony is telling licensees that the upcoming PSP2 is as powerful as a PS3.

"As powerful" you say?

I just find it hilarious that the psp2 will have as much, and maybe even double the amount of ram as the consoles. They better not skimp on ram next gen. If they're trying to pull 10 years out of these damn things, they need to step up their game. 12GB or bust.

12GB? Uh... maybe if you're running Eyefinity resolutions with 8xAA.

I'd expect 1GB on the GPU and 2GB system RAM at most.

Sony.....
You sly dog, tryin to sweet talk me into giving you attention again?
But I told you last time, we're done. It's over. I don't want to hear it anymore.
I can see through your lies, and I always could, but just all those promises... I mean, we had some great times together, but no... You never delivered. You said you would take me there, you would promise... and you never did.

It's over. I'm not listening anymore.
Fuck off.

Love,
xxxxxx

I loved my PSP. Got it launch week and have pretty much ran custom firmware since the beginning. Hell, I was an active member of a lot of PSP homebrew sites. And tbh, that's all I really used it for. I'm actually kind of sad at the level of security the PS3 had, it lasted way to long before being cracked, and the PSP2 will probably be even worse, and that gets rid of the main selling point for me :(

I have only bought maybe 4 games for my PSP, but I definitely got my money's worth out of it.

They expect to fit 2 TFLOPS of processing power into a handheld device how? And if they do the low power indicator is going to be flashing before the home screen loads.

The PS3 is no where near 2 TFLOPs. It doesn't even break the 1 TFLOP theoretical barrier. Try ~450 GFLOPS (204 from Cell, ~200-280 for the RSX). Sony completely made up the 2 TFLOPS number (they claimed the RSX could do 1.8 TFLOPS, lol)

The PS3's actual security was a complete joke once people started looking into it, efforts for which didn't really begin until OtherOS was removed.

Maybe now, but what about in 2020. You think 3GB total ram is going to cut in then? While PC users are approaching total neural integration, consoles will still be stuck with 3GB of ram. Dont' see it happening.

I love my PS3 but Sony is full of shiit on this one. I think they are grasping at straws now that people have seen the Nintendo 3DS in action.

well, first of all I like the claims in this thread that the PSP2 will have lower resolution, when that article says that it will have an HD screen... And second, I'm going to believe Sony. The PS3 is pretty old, but very powerful still obviously... with how fast I see phone hardware coming out, I can definitely see a hand-held pushing some good HD games here soon.

The 3DS is not looking too good with all the new info. The 3D is so problematic that they may as well have totally scrapped that feature, and the overall power of the system based on observation of the games looks a lot closer to the PSP than I would expect of a "next generation" handheld. Way too expensive for something so weak with a 3 hour battery life.

Good thing the consoles aren't outdated or anything.

I still remember a thread about a year ago, that detailed a "tech guy" on some review of GOTY awards, saying that the PC wasn't capable of gaming on the level of a console, and that no PC was better than a PS3. I don't think I've ever seen [H] rage so hard in my life.

Holy. Shit.

But anyways, yes. That ^^^

Well, let's be honest guys. The PS3 has a 7800GT in it and renders the vast majority of its games at sub 720p resolutions like 640p or 560p and then upscales it to 720p/1080p output. If I told you I was putting out a new gaming handheld device that could render graphics at 640x480 at the speed/power provided by a 7800GT! There would be ackward cricket noises as someone would probably point out that their netbook's onboard intel GMA7300 chip can do that and it gets better frame rates in games like WoW and many consider a netbook to be nearly handheld in size..

Yes. I am being serious about the 7800GT. It uses a "550 MHz NVIDIA/SCEI RSX 'Reality Synthesizer'" or a 550mhz clocked chip based of the 7800 architecture. You can wikipedia the RSX Reality Synthesizer if you don't believe me.

Slow down there braintrust.

640p =/= 640x480

It is either 1280x640 or 1137x640, depending on how the scaling is done. So whereas 640x480 is only 307,200 pixels, 640p is at minimum 727,680 pixels. Please think before posting next time.

It had better be more powerful than that, as the iPhone and 3DS are already looking as good as PS3.
