So I just ordered a brand new Samsung PN58C7000 and it should be here within the week. I dont want to move my desktop back and forth in order to watch tv. I believe my laptop is capable of playing 1080p mkv (or similar) files, I just need to optimize it. It plays 720p video perfectly fine and has an HDMI output.

The laptop is a Dell XPSm 1530 with the following specifications:

Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.20GHz,4MB L2 Cache,800MHz FSB)
Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT 256MB
Windows Vista (Assuming 64 bit, but it was installed by dell so who knows and I cannot check at the moment)
Video files are running from an external WD 1TB Black HDD via USB connection.

I have only played videos from VLC on this laptop, but plan on trying MPC with the CCCP-Project.net when I get home from work. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting 1080p to run properly on this machine?

Thanks

What happens with it as it is? Are you running it full-screen or in a window? Have you tried copying one of the files to the local hard drive instead of using the USB drive?

As is - it will open the 1080p file, and it might show the first few frames, then it will just update every 20-30 seconds... its that bad. It does this in either fullscreen or windowed mode. I have not tried copying the files to the local hard drive. I will try that when I get home, but to be honest I would very much prefer another workaround, since I plan on using this as a HTPC for at least a few months while I get some more money.

Try using KMplayer. I am able to watch 720p videos with it on my netbook, while no other player will.

You don't need to install any codecs.

MPC-HC should be able to use the 8600M for decoding. You only need to use EVR as the default renderer.

As stated, you should be able to use MPC-HC.

Alternatively, install XBMC Live to a USB drive and boot the laptop from that whenever you want to use it as an HTPC - it will use VDPAU (GPU acceleration) to play back nearly everything. Both of my HTPCs now run XBMC Live from USB - takes a while to boot (apparently there's a problem with GRUB2 and USB), but if you always suspend rather than shutdown it's instantaneous.

Thanks guys, running it off of MPC-HC with EVR works perfectly.

Also, thanks magao for bringing that XMBC to my attention - looks very cool.. I will play around with it a bit when I get some free time.

Edit: Question - if I upgrade to W7 64bit (since this vista version is 32 bit... why dell why??) would I need to use one of the other versions of EVR?

There's a 64bit version of MPC-HC but the 32bit version works just fine.
