Apparently Comcast has suffered a massive outage over the weekend. The company is aware of the issue and has been posting regular updates on its Twitter feed…you know…because that is the best way to keep people affected by the internet outage up to date.

Comcastcares Bill Gerth: Internet outage larger than just Boston, we should have a resolution shortly. I apologize for the current internet outage @comcastwill is trying to get more information and an ETA.

This isn't the first time Comcast has had massive outages, not the 2nd or 3rd time either. Probably related to their comtastic provisioning system or collapsing DNS.

Definitely effected Atlanta during the night too. I wondered about that. Checked router, couldn't ping yahoo or google, but still had a few websites that worked.

Eventually changed DNS servers, and was running smooth.

So it was their DNS again. I wonder if someone hacked their DNS servers again and they had to be rolled back.

Yea that was a treat.. Go ComCrap!
Figured out it was DNS when I could get directed IP traffic out but nothing by name. Go Droid for backup internet to lookup a free DNS...

And honestly I think I'm just going to stay on Google DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) for a while.

This. Honestly, I already give them $55 a month for internet service alone, why does my ISP need to redirect me to a page full of ads every time I type a URL incorrectly.

You can opt out of it. Or just use different DNS.

Comcast sucks. I used to use them for several years and had an issue every six months it seemed with their dns servers, connection drops, slow network, etc....

Comcast internet has always been decently reliable for me, but this outage was the most inconvenient in a long time.

It was definitely their DNS servers this time. My houses and apartment from Cape Cod to Boston to Amherst were knocked out.

I wondered why I was being routed from Atlanta -> Texas -> Denver point of presence -> Chicago when the datacenter I colo at is peered with comcast.

OpenDNS. Use it. Love it. I stopped using ISP DNS after discovering them. I set just about everything to use it unless there's specific cause to use provided DNS.

If you have a business, be a good person and use their commercial version. It means the rest of us can use for free at home.

Just noticed there's a pay for it version for home now too. Might be worth 10 bucks a year for solid DNS....

My only interweb choice is crapcast. Even the techs for them in this area hate the service

Sarcasm On
Yep, Twitter limits the size of its tweets to fit in one SMS message because twitter was *meant* to be accessed exclusively through the Internet through an ISP.
Sarcasm Off
Double

Somebody doesn't remember that Twitter was originally created for mobile phones without internet access. http://www.140characters.com/2009/01/30/how-twitter-was-born/

4.2.2.2
4.1.1.1

2 other free DNS servers

NEVER use comcast's shit DNS. Its another way which they can track you :D

It's funny you most of you are complaining with this issue. I have had this problem going on for two months now in Baltimore. Sadly Comcast is the only option I have for my specific area.

Didn't see it. BECAUSE I'M ON FIOS.

LOL. Comcast. I feel for folks that have no options there.

When they roll out DNSSEC in your area they will go away because that system would break the security that SEC brings. all of this will happen in all areas by March 2011.

If you want to use the new DNS servers now they are at 75.75.75.75 and 75.75.76.76 and at least to my knowledge wasn't affected by their outage this weekend. They are a lot faster than their standard servers as well running about neck and neck with Level3's servers 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2

Comcast user here.

Glad I didn't notice any outage...I use a 2008 server at my house that uses root hints.

:p

I was proud of myself as a CIS student to fix this on my own. Just changed the DNS addresses on my router after pinging around the local loop and other sites.

It also seems like their mail server is having issues, I am getting duplicate mails from different people, all with comcast addresses.

OpenDNS is great, never had a problem with them. I do recommend them!
