I have an Alienware with 6G PC10700@ 1600, an I860 at 3.533 with turbo and hyper threading still enabled, and a 5870 at 900/1300. It came with a 1TB 3g/sc 7200 spd hard drive but the case has 3 open HD bays ready to go and easy to access.

I was thinking of getting an SSD and make it a boot drive but i know NOTHING about this and its a new project for me.

Newegg has an intel 40G SSD that comes with a free game of Lost planet 2 (im a gamer so thats a nice little $39.00 value for me) and i was thinking of pulling the triger on it for $89 bucks.

However, i dont want to buy a horrible SSD just for the game and i am not sure if 40G is enough (although i think win 7 takes about 11 G of it so it should be)...so thats why I am here.

Help please!

Allen

My advice would be to get at least 80GB if you can. Then you can have W7, basic software and a few games without problems. 40GB might be a little short for all that.

Firstly, Intel is a very reliable manufacturer of SSDs. Not only do they make quality SSDs, but their customer service is equally impressive.

Secondly, most people nowadays use SSDs for their OS and more-frequently-used applications. Stuff like music, movies, photos, small files, and lesser-used applications are put in a secondary HDD. I am pretty sure that you will be VERY satisfied with this kind of setup, and the 40gb SSD you mentioned should do the trick. Unless you frequently use many big-file software and games, in which case I say go for a bigger SSD

I have a 40gb ssd with intel controller, and it's enough for win 7 pro + a lot of programs. I put games and media files on another drive, it works great.

I would stay away from sandforce, I have had 3 of them and all 3 blew. One was super slow, the other 2 died in less than 3 weeks from newegg. Right now on amazon they have a 120gb intel drive for $165 after mail in rebate. 3 times the size and less than double the price of the drive you are currently looking at, its $1.375 a gig. I just bought one and I plan on selling the replacement gskill drive I get back from newegg.

40gb is not enough. With windows updates it barely fits. And copying and pasting a file that is more than a couple of gigs to another drive is a pain in the ass, bc the main drive isn't big enough.

40gb may get you by, but it would behove you to spend more to get an 80gb, I would imagine that there will be some for sale on the forums for less than 165. You won't get lost planet 2, but from the reviews that I have read, that may not be a bad thing.
