I just finished a quasi-HTPC build, primarily for movies from netflix and rentals from iTunes.

I bought an optical drive and splurged for one that included a BD player.

What is the best software to use to play BD and DVD movies?

I haven't a clue, the drive didn't include any software for playback, and I don't really want to spend an ass load of money to buy some shitty software that is more than I need.

The HTPC runs off an ASUS P5K-WiFi MB an old C2D at 3 GHz and W7 Professional.

Thanks.

TotalMedia for me, been using this for over a year. Work flawlessly.

I'm a fan of Media Player Classic: HomeCinema. I use it to play everything including BluRays.

Extremely extensible.

The only thing is you will need to decrypt your BluRays first. AnyDVD HD will do that in real-time so you can just pop in a disk and play it in MPC:HC

I would go with Total Media Theater. I had used Power DVD before and it is total crap. Half the time it would not work or load the bluray....even after updates.

I'm also going to strongly recommend TotalMedia solely based on the fact that there's a very tight Media Center integration including Media Center interfacing.
