After too many delays, the long awaited prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy is about to become a reality. Peter Jackson will be back at the helm with all of Weta Workshop’s special effects and of course, it will be rendered in 3-D. It’s a geek and nerd technical wonder paradise.

Meh on the 3D but if they hold up to the LOTR movies I'm in. :)

Please won't someone just kill 3D and be done with it. I'm seriously tired of waiting for the movies I want to watch to get into a 2D theater.

Either make 3D without needing those damn glasses or stop it altogether.

What a drag; 3d that is. I wish this 3d bullshit would just go away.

Please stop trying to make things 3D that aren't.

If you really want to be 3D, come closer and I will make your face even more 3D.

So in other words principal photography is about to begin?

A lot of the artwork should be ready at this point as well. :)

Fuck 3D. I can take or leave the extra D but what I can't take is having to wear those cheap fucking glasses for 2.5 hours. Plus the surcharge bullshit. GOD DAMN IT. I've been waiting for these movies for a while now. Fucking Warner Bros... They're doing this shit to Part 2 of the LAST Harry Potter movie, too. Why bother? Why fucking bother? You've put out 7 other movies in the same series, all of which have been extremely successful and now you want to add 3d to it? How much more could you milk this fucking cow? I mean really?

I think I read somewhere else that production begins in February 2011. Jackson will not spare the horsepower, it will be shot in full 3-D, not adapted to 3-D. I'm sure it will be in 2-D as well so there will be no problems.

Wow, some of you need to lay off the energy drinks and lighten up a bit, sheesh. :p

Thats one good thing. I just hope he doesn't feel the need to make stupid 3D effects that then look like ass in 2D. If he takes cues from Avatar's use of 3D I think it could end up working well. If he takes cues from crap like RE: Extinction, it could end up being very bad.

I thought the hobbit was supposed to come out 5 years ago?

Something like that. Between labor disputes, the writer's strike, and MGM just outright dying its been in development hell for a while.

I hope Jackson makes smart use of 3D and not just the cheesy effect most directors do. I can see Jackson having the ability to do it justice but his track record (no counting LOTRs) has me worried he won't.

At least the movies shouldn't suck , we won't be seeing them for a while though.

you guys whine too much. There are always non-3D versions of every 3D movies made today. Don't like 3D? Watch the non-3D and leave 3D to those who do want to see it. I'm sure the movie industries are well aware of the fact that we'd rather do without 3D glasses and I'm sure that there are some R&D going on with the camera and television industry regarding true-3D. Either you contribute to the R&D or shut up and wait for it to arrive.

As for the Hobbit movie, I'm looking forward to it. Jackson's done a fantastic job with the LOTR trilogy. I'm sure he'll do equally well making The Hobbit.

Ah man. Looks like someone stuck a pin in Peter Jackson.
He dropped a ton of weight after production of the trilogy had finished. By the time he shot King Kong he was around 100 pounds lighter.

Seems weird, but I kind of liked him fat. Seems less jovial now.

Been a massive fan of Peter Jackson since his first feature film, Bad Taste. You could tell even from those humble beginnings that he was destined to become a fantastic director/film-maker. I prefer his older works over much of his newer stuff. Brain Dead (Dead Alive), Meet The Feebles, The Frighteners were just awesome. Probably just because I dig the horror genre.

Please do another zombie/horror gorefest Mr. Jackson! k thx bye!

I disklike the 3-D as much as the rest of you (probably more since it can cause me to have a seizure  ), but realize that the Movie Industry wouldn't do it if they didn't think people were stupid enough to pay the extra money ($3 per person at times) to have their eyes tricked.

The next time you go to the theatre, just refuse to watch the 3-D Movie and go somewhere else to see it NOT in 3-D if you have to. The Movie Theatres will get the hint first and start requesting less 3-D flicks to get the business back. At some point, if the demand diminishes, they'll quit making the dumb things all together.

lol +1

I hope he keeps the filming like he did in LotR. I really don't want to see too much CGI and rip off Avatar.

Endgame goal: true Virtual Reality (think "Holodeck")
[see my reference link below]

-dead on, yet politely put (even though I've voiced the same frustration at least one point or another, while fully knowing the end goal. LOL)

QFT. It's come and gone for the past, what, 30 years? It's nothing more than a gimmick until it is perfected (if it ever will be).

It's much less of a gimmick nowadays though! Or have you not been to a movie in the last couple years? ;)

...I'm sure the movie industries are well aware of the fact that we'd rather do without 3D glasses and I'm sure that there are some R&D going on with the camera and television industry regarding true-3D. Either you contribute to the R&D or shut up and wait for it to arrive.

This last comment highlights it all IMO. =)

"3d" as it's loosely used today, is nothing more than the R&D for holodecks (as a side-effect if you will). Eyefinity is a nice side effect as well! And as you can also see at

The history behind Eyefinity confirms this:
His desire to do this wasn’t born out of pure lunacy, Carrell does have a goal in mind. Within the next 6 years he wants to have a first generation holodeck operational.

And that's the only reason why I'm looking past all of the "marketing" feast that 3d movies have become!! (The more that the movie industry pays to get us closer to that goal, the less we'll have to pay.)

As for the Hobbit movie, I'm looking forward to it. Jackson's done a fantastic job with the LOTR trilogy. I'm sure he'll do equally well making The Hobbit.

For me, Peter Jackson being one part, and continuing to watch the advancement of "3d" bringing us closer to holodecks just "rocks my socks" (so to speak). Exciting times indeed!!

Totally forgot to mention (and it's well overdue...)

*Sincere thanks* to you (and your team) Mr Carrell Killebrew.

Thank you for chasing the dream that "Star Trek TNG/DS9/Voyager" brought to life!!
Your efforts are both appreciated, and respected!

And thanks to AMD for "inadvertantly" supporting that as well! :D

Well done sir!! And I wish you the very best of success!
*salute*

Will it even be filmed there? I've read that one of the delays was due to labor disputes with the actor's union there, and they were looking at other locations to use.

I hope so! -as all the ground work is already in place... But I'll bet that the original land owner will want much more of a premium this time around as a result of seeing just how insanely successful the LoTR's was !! lol :D

I'm sure the guy is gonna want a premium. lol

Each movie is budgeted for $250 Million. So both films for $500M.

I already have high expectations for this film.

Hobbit movies being made = fantastic

In 3D = just give it up aready

Sadly Guillermo del Toro quit.

I'd love to see a del Toro Hobbit movie, but I can't blame him. The man is working on like a million movies and they were making him essentially sit around and twiddle his thumbs waiting.

No, it was the Screen Actors Guild having a dispute with the movie's producers and staff BECAUSE it was being filmed in New Zealand, there were no protests coming from any group in New Zealand. This is because the actors won't have to pay the guild anything for the movie (it won't be included in computing their dues). Simply put, SAG was just getting too greedy, typical of Hollywood.

How about releasing the EXTENDED editions of the trilogy on blu-ray before thinking about doing more 3D bullshit.

3D w/glasses = fuck that
3D wo/glasses = meh, maybe I'll watch something 3D every now and then
