So whats FFXIV beta like?

The storyline quests are amazing so far. Same with the cutscenes. Combat is pretty good once you start collecting abilities. It's simple at first but you can mix and match abilities from different classes you've leveled as you level them.

I tried out crafting a few hours ago. The system is probably the most engaging crafting setup I've ever played. There's a meter that runs down as you work on the item. You can pick how thoroughly you want to craft an item but you need to make sure you get it to 100% complete before the meter runs out or you break it.

Very cool stuff.

Half of you say its boring and lifeless, the other half says its amazing lol.

At least you all agree that its the best looking MMO to date.

I really want to get into 14. I never played 11... and fear my years of WoWing and WARing and EVEing will make it really really hard for me to get into this game.

This game isn't really anything like 11, so you don't need to worry about having experience. The main point of this game is that it's story driven. When you do quests, they're long chains with interesting cut scenes. If you really want to kill 5 rabbits though, you can do that too.

FF games are all about character growth. If you play it for 1 afternoon and don't like it, I wouldn't blame you. You really can take a character very far in just a few hours.

Anyone running the Beta running in SLI or CFX?

I know there was a hack to enable them in the benchmark, using a full screen hack, and tricking the drivers to think the bench is another game like crysis or 3dmark.

Any luck with the actual game (Open Beta)? And what kind of results are you seeing?

Thanks

All you do to change professions is switch weapons. There's vendors that sell the different weapons for about 300gil (you get about 1000 for doing a guildleve)

Galaxy 470GTX in SLI at 6360X1080 (3X 23"). Out in the open 50-60fps and in crowded areas around the Aetherite crystals it drops to around 30. Occlusion is off, AA is 4X, everything else is maxed. Cards do run at 90% though, so hopefully it gets optimized. SLI is most definitely working.

I played for a bit today. Navigating the UI and stuff will take some time to figure out, but I was able to complete a quest.

I started out in the 3rd city. Talk to one of the NPCs near you and he will take you to a tavern kind of place. At one of the booths, an NPC will hand out quests (or guildleves as they call them). There were a lot of crafting ones, but I took the ones that involved killing mobs since I chose a caster class.

They all involved going out to a camp outside of town, so I ran out there. Once there, you walk near the crystal and an icon appears at the top of your screen. You can choose to activate one of the quests. I had to kill 3 Naked Moles. The map will have a yellow spot where the moles are. Also the minimap will have an arrow in that direction. Combat was kinda confusing because I didn't know how to interpret the combat UI, but I finished the quest.

I went back to the crystal and turned it in and got my rewards. I gained a level, but I'm not sure what the stats do.

anyone got gameplay videos? is it super duper boring still?

Im wondering when or where you get more story quests lines like the first one. After the first one I didn't see any more.

Ok. So on second evaluation Im liking it more. I finally figured out how to get all the tutorial quests and how to finish them. I also figured out loading up my bar with my weapon shots and allocating points ect. I like how after you finish a quest a "shard" appears and tells you what loot you just won and also offers to transport you back to last town you were in...The map is GREAT.
Things I cant figure out yet...how to join my rangers guild?...they offer it but there is no way to accept..I guess there is no "jump' button...Keyboard mapping seems unintuitive...Anyway. Im enjoying it more today.

That's interesting I get nowhere near that on a similar setup. Wonder what the difference is. At those settings I get low 20s everywhere

Compared to WoW, very boring. But I haven't gotten to any large group action... so maybe I shouldn't be so quick to judge.

The game is just so beautiful. It's hard to resist, even if I know I'll only play for a month or two.

Im glad its not like WOW. Im really enjoying it now that I figured some stuff out, though they just went down and I cant get back on.
Ahh...I knew i wanted to mention something. When you take on a quest it asks if you are soloing or grouping and then what type of group.
The quest is then tailored to your needs. I like that.

Those panoramics look really nice.

I don't know about the other cities, but the 3rd city, there's a tavern near the north side. There's a circular booth with 2 NPCs in it. They hand out quests.

How do you load your weapons bar/see it?

It onloy appears when im in combat and if I hold alt/ctrl it appears but I can't drag/drop/move anything around in it.

I don't get why on earth they couldn't have it simply work like EVERY other mmo and allow you to drag/drop, etc.

The UI as a whole is EXTREMELY bad, it's like something out of a 1998 PS1 jrpg. They really need to work on redesigning it.

anyone else's game crashing to desktop? it happens when im running to a mob area for my active quest (it happened twice, and when i log back in my quest is gone). same thing happens with my wife. losing the quest when i log back in is pissing me off ><

im using both main and side comps in my sig....

EDIT: So I told my wife not to log on (we are in the same network, same room) and I could finally finish a quest without it crashing....wtf is this. anyone else playing with someone on the same network?

Just finished my first crafting quest...wow...It took FOREVER to figure out how to craft..but my pleas were heard and other players helped me get started.

To load your bar with new skills you go to the 2nd option in the menu. When this opens there will be a drop down menu you can select your job.

I had marauder so axes shows up. Once you select that a list of skills will show up. Select the slot you want on the left side then click on the skill. When you click the skill it will say equip to main hand or off hand. I selected equip main hand and a message says skill xxx has been equiped to slot 2.

Hope this helps

how can we improve performance on this? I'm running it on a 2.2 GHz C2D, nVidia Quadro 570M (essentially an 8600m GT, which is below minimum, I realize), 3GB RAM, and a 7.2k RPM HD.

The best I can get right now is 1024x768, everything lowest, and buffer set at 3/4? Even at these settings, it's still rather choppy. Pretty awful on a 1920x1200 screen!

That's what I love about this game so far.

A. Stuff can be hard (crafting isn't just click-and-produce.)

B. People are generally helpful.

Exactly. That's how FFXI was, and why some people didn't appreciate it.

The ALT/CTRL bar you're seeing is the macro bar (accessed through the config option in the menu). Main thing most people are using the macro bar for atm is quick job changing.

The UI is perfectly fine IMO, the only issue I have with it is the lag. The UI somewhat resembles FFXI's, which means the learning curve is steep, but it works well once you get the hang of it.

Let me know if anyone wants to group. I have skype if people want to chat. Maybe we can start a clan to test?

If your computer is good enough, then yes it does look great graphically.

My Q6600 + GTX260 is getting its ass kicked.

BETA applications are back up! Just got into it, finally.

seems to be a glitch this am with the updater...stops at 99.9% over and over again.
After two hours the updater, updated.

It's got the worst UI of any MMO to date, and I've played almost all of them. It violates every tenet of good UI design.

It needs to be replaced or overhauled, but it's not going to be, because Square doesn't give two shits what the customer thinks, and never has. They do things the way they want to do them, and that's that.

The UI is so bad that it is a serious deterrent to actually enjoying the game. It's also subject to enormous amounts of lag based on server load.

I'd say that server lag is the worst problem right now. People can say "It's a beta!" but the game is three weeks from being live. They are controlling the flow of people who can sign up and get accounts, and still the servers are lagged to hell. On launch day they aren't going to be able to do that. There is no sign of any kind of queue system. The game is simply going to break from the load.

I dont know if the UI is bad, but it is certainly unintuitive. After playing all day yesterday, I'm really enjoying the game, and have gotten use to the UI to the point where it isnt interfering with my game play.

I've been sitting here at 94.8% on the updater for the past 10 hours.
Gay.

Completely remove it and start again...worked for me this am. And make sure you have your anti-virus turned off. MSE alerts you to a virus.

Yep, throw them in the patch folder

Thanks for this tidbit! I was wondering the same thing myself, I had copied the files to at least three locations trying to get the installer to see them.

Now I'll have to do some serious drive cleaning after I get the install done, nothing like 30 gigs of redundant data! ;)

I got a key for the beta today, entered it into my square enix account, it wants me to then log into the ffxiv beta website, but my square enix login does not work on the beta site and it says its not allowing anymore registrations. ideas what I may be doing wrong?

** looks like I can just download it without registering on the beta site

** Ugh, I hate torrent style downloaders for games.. fu square enix.
