John Mellencamp Likens Internet to an A-Bomb

Little ditty, about a has-been that's washed up and needs moooooneeeyyyyyy...

I'm sorry, the 80s were a wasteland, music wise

As compared to the Katy Perry / Gaga era?:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yea, there was fluff, but there was also some dang good stuff!

At least the good music of the era sounded.... good! It had dynamic range and punch. Remember listening to 'Brothers in Arms' on CD for the first time?

Today, the record producers demand absurd levels of compression. Most of today's CDs, regardless of the genre, sound like shit. The self-inflicted 'Loudness War' has done FAR more damage than the internet ever will.

What's with all these washed up has-been singers dissing the internet lately?

Get with the times, or move your wheelchair off to the side of the road.

I enjoyed his music when he started out. I enjoyed it less and less as he made more crap. Stopped buying it at the end of the 80's. I wouldn't bother to download his album, for free, so what makes him think I would buy it? I saw a vid with Jagger on it, he said that there was a little tiny window or period of time in history that bands made huge money, and it was going away. He gets it. Cougar is just mad that he is a has been.

I think the music industry and movie industry can destroy themselves fine on their own. Nowadays you get like what? 1-2 good songs or movies each year? I gave up on American music a while ago. I've been solely listening to electronica or Japanese music for the past few years. Hate that a 2 song single costs $10-$15, but I think it's worth it. $10-$15 for a full album from a US artist? Fuck no.

what a dumbfuck.

he said that for publicity, since his album just came out yesterday.

It's ranked #2 on amazon. So what the fuck is he bitching about?

Movies still make close to a billion$$$, or at least half that. Only shitty movies and music don't make money.

The internet isn't killing shit.

Piracy is obviously preventing him from being the #1 spot on Amazon.

Why don't any of these artists glom onto the factoids and studies which show that people who download music on the internet are also the most prolific purchasers of music?

Apathy, alternate forms of entertainment and a general exodus of musical talent from the major labels to the independents (and direct sales) are what are gutting the traditional music business model. Evolve or die.

I can see the comparison to the atom bomb in terms of the defining moment in human history and the dawn of a new era but the idea that somehow the internet destroyed the music industry if one sided and flawed.

Greed has destroyed the music industry's opportunities to keep making the same insane amounts of money they did in the past using outdated distribution methods and catering to the lowest common listener instead of focusing on making quality art and working on multiple ways to put it in the hands of fans that would buy it.

Artists don't even get their most of their money from album sales but from concerts and the related merchandise sales. Mellencamp is even more out of the loop on knowing what caused the industry's problems by not being a newer artist but one who's career hit it's highpoint more than 20 years ago.

It would be akin to Van Damme making coments about the movie industry. The multiple businesses like google, apple, facebook, twitter and microsoft (amongst others,) all either saw the internet coming and adapted to profit off it or were there to define it and profit off it.

Coments like this are why i pay actors and singers 0% attention for their opinions about anything going on in the world. I want to know what CEO's think, what governments think, what PHD's think and what lawyers think cause they build and shape our future and most artists can only entertain us since they are not well enough informed to be a representative voice on issues any more than I could give legal or medical advice.

Worse of all is the movie industry makes more money every year than the last and most of the world is still in a economic recovery.

Mellencamp should understand better that the internet is access to information Some information is dangerous if used dangerously some is educational some is even illegal but the idea that it is informations fault that is going to somehow hurt the human race is close minded.

I liken it to the first time the Bible was printed, and then in english and not latin. For the first time regular folk could access fairly important information and for some that indeed changed the world.

Mellencamp should tackle issues like why there are people living in the US who are forbiden by law to drill wells for running water and have sky high unemplyment rates (the native americans,) instead of being worried about how he cannot convince people to buy his music anymore if he want to be concerned of real issues facing people in 2010 .

but I want my gold plated shark tank now, *sobs* ,..... lol
