Want to upgrade to HP ZR30w, how does 1280x800 gaming look on it?

I was thinking that I could get a big screen and still run games easily with an old 8800GT since it will just quadruple every pixel with software scaling... right?

Won't it still look good because it scales perfectly? I'm thinking it will look better than 1650x1080 on my 1920x1200 res monitor... Or am I completely off base?

Thanks to anyone that has some experience on this matter.

The picture will be perfectly sharp and good.
Just remember to activate a 2x antialiasing, because the dot pitch will be extremely low, and you will be OK. ;)
For MMORPG's, RPG and games which need a lot of space for the HUD it could become a problem, though. But for those just put the graphic quality on a lower level an crank up the resolution. You will not regret it. ;)

Don't bother until you upgrade your graphics card first. The GC should take priority over any monitor upgrade.

It's foolish to get a monitor for gaming and you can't even run it at native resolution. His money would be better spent upgrading his graphics cards which is a cheaper and better solution. If he's looking for size then there are tv alternatives which are larger for that price.

jubrany do you game often? if your just a casual gamer like me meaning maybe 3 times a week, go for it and get that new 30" beast :) I been through 3 30" monitors, apple, dell, and now samsung which is dying on me :(, so going back to dell getting the hc version.

When I first got my apple 30" late 2006 I was using a 7800gtx to play games at native res just had to turn down all the graphic settings till I get a better card.

IMHO just get the 30" first then get a new graphics card later, just surfing the net and opening different windows on a 30" makes a world a difference.

If he already has a decent monitor then he should just upgrade his graphics card which shouldn't cost more than 400 at maximum to get one that will run games in native then get the monitor. This is putting the cart before the horse.

Just upgrade your graphics card and wait a couple of months while you replenish your monetary supplies and then you might be able to get some sort of deal with the ZR-30 or see if anything new comes out. Right now it would be pretty much a waste.

Thanks for all your guys' input. Right now I'm just getting back into PC gaming, but to be honest I play PC games only a few hours a week if that.

I definitely want to build a new system, but I want to wait for native chipset support for USB 3.0 as well as a further price drop on SSDs and mainstream 6-core CPUs from intel. It'll probably run me 4 grand to build the system I want with the ZR30w, so I want to try to avoid buying it all together so my pant pockets stay intact lol. And being the monitor whore that I am I would really like to upgrade that first. Heck, worst case scenario I continue to game on my BenQ 241wz and use the 30 incher strictly for my routine PC stuff.

Yeah, but wait a few weeks, because it seems that there will be a U3011. Wait the reviews before buying anything.

Atm, I'm gaming at 1280x800 because I need to buy an adatper to get 2560x1600. It looks good. I just put the AA up as high as I can, and I can put everything else to max. Looks good, but I do want 2560x1600 for desktop work, in which i do a lot.

I say go for the monitor and worry about upgrading the video card later. You will get more out of the monitor upgrade than the video card upgrade because you'll be using the monitor for every single thing you do on the pc which I imagine is not just gaming, while the video card you will only be taking advantage of it when you game.

I just finished my PC build tonight. Gigabytes of data are being downloaded to the new machine now. I have a Dell U2001W on loan from my brother in law while I decide what I want in the way of a monitor. I am definitely looking at this HP and a Dell U3007-HC. I have a nice digital SLR and I would like to be able to trust my photo editing work on whatever monitor I choose, and I know I will need to calibrate first. I will also be gaming though, so low input lag is somewhat important as well. I have heard nothing but good things about this display. It jumped to the top of my interest list almost overnight. If anyone is using this panel as an all around display (PC work, gaming, photo, vid) I would love to hear your thoughts.
