5970 Problem

Hey there,

I'm on my second 5970. First one would crash on 2d. I now have a new one that does not have that problem, however.

I noticed some play artifacts while playing BF:BC2. Little black squares, you can see them at certain portions of the level.

I checked the heat and I was at 82, which I have heard is ok for a 5970 however to not let it get much hotter. I turned on the fan to cool it down and I still see these.

Question 1: Is this another crap card or is this just a game issue? I have not see these in other games so far.

Question 2: Is 82c too hot? Is there a way to tell my driver to not let it get that hot without running the fan all the time? My PC actually runs pretty cool and it really only needs the fan in intense games.

I had these on my 5870s, from my vram overheating. Once I got my temps under control, they went away. (I was hitting in the high 80s- too hot for my cards imo, so I strive to hit mid 70s at full tilt)

I had a 5970 I just got rid of. My temps were about the same- mid to upper 70s under full load, with fan around 70%, I believe.

Same here...I saw the little black squares during the snowy levels early on in BFBC2 and noticed temps close to 90 with crossfired 5870's. Got temps under control (low 70's for hottest card) and didn't notice it anymore. 82c *should* be ok but try lowering into the 70's and see how it looks.

Is there a way to tell my driver to not let it get that hot without running the fan all the time without having to micromanage it in manual mode?

create a profile that sets your fan to max speed and starts whatever game is causing you issues then send to it desktop as a shortcut. It'll max out your fan and start your game just like a regular shortcut. But you will have to make another shortcut for normal usage.

Thanks, I will try that. Too bad ATI does not simply alow you to set a "FAN GOES ON AT 85C" from the control panel. Or better yet, have the driver be smart enough to not let the fan sit idle at high temps.
