I am going to college next year, and I plan to ditch my desktop and go with only a Macbook pro. I want to maybe set up a NAS using spare, outdated parts at home for my family to use. Here's the question, is it possible to enable me to backup the files on my laptop as well using mac softwares like time machine and carbon copy cloner and send to back to my NAS?

I am not too familiar with with back up servers. All I use today are two terabyte drives running in RAID 1. Something simple and affordable would be great.

Thanks in advance.

It is fairly easy. You basically can map a network share/ drive to OSX then set time machine to back up to that network location.

My one word of advice would be to skip a big, bulky setup. Think, Atom + 2 green drives or something like that if you require a PC versus a purpose built NAS. A decent Atom + 2x 2TB combo + Case and PSU (assuming this is mITX stuff) will probably run you about $400 all-in. Moving down to 1x2TB drive would save you about $100.

If you don't want a full blown PC (understanable given the applicaiton) pretty much any NAS appliance will do the same thing for you.

Hmm, I don't know if we are on the same age or not. I plan to only take my Macbook with me and leave the rest of the back up bulk at home, where I won't visit often. I know that Atom is the way to go, but considering making a NAS using parts from the P4 age cost me literally nothing ( already have some WD greens), I think it's the most cost effective route to take. And my real trouble lies in how am I going to make my laptop back up over the internet.
