ProScan 55" 240Hz LCD $1099+tax w/free shipping @ Walmart

any one know if these aren't piles of poo lol?

about 1/2 the price i paid for my bravia 120hz around November. Great deal if they look good.

Kinda weird. Back in the 90's ProScan made super good quality CRT TV's and you normally only saw them at specialty audio/video shops. Kinda strange seeing them at Wal-Mart.

(though I'm sure this is just an "in name" type thing).

That's because, back in the 90's, ProScan was the "high end" of RCA's model line. The current version of ProScan is made in Korea and isn't marketed as high-end, it is instead marketed as high-mainstream. I have heard of salesmen who are still attempting to describe ProScans as high-end but ymmv.

For what it's worth, the ProScans I have seen rate right with the Dynex/Insignia brands sold by BB. Not sure about the quality of service available for sets purchased at Walmart however.

One of the reviews on Walmart's site claims this particular one is a rebranded RCA. It has a link, says even the OSD and remote are identical. Dunno if that makes or breaks the deal, but I thought it was interesting enough to point out.

BTW, I have a 55" Vizio and love it - I think most would lump the two together in the 'budget' arena. Knowing that I'll likely replace my tv every few years with whatever newer technology comes out, I try and stay on the cheap end. LED backlighting and 120Hz technologies came out right after I bought mine, so there's already two excuses for me to upgrade in a couple years. :)

I wish walmart had a bing cashback deal currently going on...This seems like the cheapest and largest lcd available...

RCA = Proscan and Proscan = RCA, nothing new here.

Now if it was a rebrand of a quality model then you'd have our attention. This is a low end brand's attempt at a high end model.

I agree the deal is pretty warm but personally i would pass unless i could couple it with a cheap 3 year warranty.

I'll let you guys know when mine arrives. I looked around every website I know of and also drove to every store within a 40 mile radius looking. Vizio 55" was cheapest one I could find @ $1,300 + tax. I figured for $300 less it wouldn't hurt to try it, if I don't like it, I'll return it.

It is kinda scary to pay this kinda money for a TV and to not have looked at it's picture quality.
I went ahead and bought the $118 additional 3 year warranty. So for around $1,280 I got the Proscan 55" + 4 years of warranty thru Walmart.

Link above says the Samsung 55" is close to $1,800
While $1,099 isn't cheap for a TV, I just can't bring myself to pay another 2 or 3 thousand for a tv again- especially since my Toshiba died twice in 9 years.

The samsung is only $1400 shipped when you throw in the coupon code.

Actually it appears that RCA licensed the ProScan name to another company: http://oncorpus.com/

I have a friend who bought a lawn tractor from Walmart. It needed warranty service so he took it to an authorized service center. They would not touch it. They told him it was not the same spec as sold by other stores it was built to Walmarts specs and he would have to go back to Walmart for service. He did and they gave him his money back no questions asked. I'd rather play it safe and buy from a reputable retailer.

When I was working at Circuit City during the liquadation we didnt take returns, we had to setup a testing table for the ProScan 32 inchers we were selling. Probably close to 30% of them wouldnt even power on, I'm not sure how long the ones that did power on ended up lasting for.

as long as this tv is not complete garbage, id say its a solid deal
I dont think I ever seen specs like that at this price
plus its walmart... play with it for a few weeks and if it disappoints, just get your money back

Good points, and don't mind my negative tone, i'm just pissed that i recently missed a 50" panasonic C1 plasma liquidation deal for $440 + tax brand new from an authorized dealer, i missed it by minutes !!! :(

For the OP's deal i'd still advise the additional 3 years of coverage to give you a safe four years total.

The one poster above claims that 3 years additional only costed him $118, well worth it imho.
