best DDR3 triple channel memory kit

Yes, the Elpida situation has been resolved. In fact, these ICs are already being phased out so "git em while you can".

I'm building a similar system in the near future as well and RAM is proving to be an even more difficult decision than the video card. I'm curious as to how much difference the stock timings make between various kits. For instance, how would the following two kits compare to one another?

The advertised timings on the Corsair kit are much better, but does it make a $50 difference? Completely subjective, I know. But I am asking for opinions, so that's to be expected.

What do you folks think?

I've had 12GB of OCZ Platinum 1600mhz CL6 kit for nearly a year now. Bought two sets from Amazon while they had a great deal on them, and they've worked flawlessly. I've even had an easy time OCing them, which I will admit to being due to a bit of good luck considering I combined two sets 3 instead of buying one set of 6 or a very expensive 3x4 set.

I particularly don't favor any RAM maker, although I tend not to buy Corsair as Corsair tends not to be as cheap as others (at least whenever I'm in the market for RAM.) I find Dominators and their ilk to be overpriced and not worth it. Specs and voltage IMHO are more important than heat sinks, but then again extremes in either mhz or timings are usually not worth their price, especially on Intel systems.

honestly i have found mushkin DDR3 1600 to be great mem and am looking forward to getting some a friend of mine got hold of some and its amazing. had some dual channel ddr3 1333 but replaced with corsair xms 3 and i regret it

Oddly, reading this thread made me a bit more confused about which brand to buy :).

I've been debating between Mushkin XP-3 XP 12800, Corsair XMS3 Dominator, Patriot Sector 5, Mushkin Blackline, Patriot Extreme Viper. It seems people in this thread are for the most part giving some support to Mushkin, a few ppl to Patriot and a few people to Corsair which doesn't seem to make the choice much easier.

Personally, I was leaning towards Corsair only because I used a corsair ram in my last pc and it seemed to work alright but they are pretty pricey compared to any of the other products mentioned. Probably $60.00 more expensive for 12GB worth. I've seen a few people recommend different the Dominator memory and other say its overpriced/overrated. If it is overpriced without just cause, I wonder which of the other brands are best?

I'll throw a vote in for G-skill. Just got my Ripjaws in from the Egg and BOOM... all 12GB showed up like magic. Can't say that about my OCZ :)

i dont see any CAS6 ripjaws. I know Ripjaws are in general very good, and a lot of people have been buying the CAS8/9 ones, but when we're talking best of the best, I see only Mushkin and Corsair on the CAS6 list....

Show me real-life differences going from CAS8 to CAS6 and I'll buy you a beer. Synthetic benchmarks, sure... but real life? I can't think of anything...

Anandtech showed benches where i7 is more affected by timings than clock speed (for memory)

I have seen those benches... and we are talking less than 5% different, usually only 1 or 2%. Totally not worth it for memory that can cost 2x...

Pshh. We're hardcore. We'll spend $500 to get a 20% boost in some games with SLI :D

But yes I know what you mean. I was trying to work with the OP since he was looking for "best." Typically we settle for best value with a balance of timings. But best typically means being able to get CL6 in my book.... as long as they can clock higher with some relaxed timings.

Erhm, you can run any decent Elpida-based DDR3 at 1600 and 6-6-6-15 (that includes Corsair GT series, Kingston HyperX and so on), so what? Show me DDR3 that can do CAS 5 @ 1600mhz and then I'll be impressed :D

My clan mate bought a set of these, he has them running at 5-5-5-15 1t 1.66v Probably the nicest ram I have ever seen. Not easy to get, it took almost a month before he got his, ordering direct from Mushkin. Apparently sticks like these are extreme cherry picks.

If you live near a Fry's electronics I recommend taking a stroll and checking to see if they carry the Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1600 kit, got mine for $90 after rebate

So this thread has yet to come to a consensus. There really is no 'best.' It will ultimately rely on what you are willing to spend, and what type of performance you need.

It's like asking 10 people what the best sports car is... you'll probably get 10 different answers :D
