With the 2011 release date approaching quickly EA is banking on Star Wars fans around the world.

The BioWare-developed MMO is the “largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company,” he said, adding that the project costs “significantly more” than EA’s average, $30 million packaged game.

While no exact figure has been disclosed, I would expect the highly anticipated game to reach over the 100 million mark. Now let's hope that they spent their money wisely...

Welcome to the [H] Karl. Thanks for the heads up on the game. I'm hoping it's a good one!

ton of money != good gaming. I would be wary of this. hope its good though

Thanks for the warm welcome. I use to play Star Wars Galaxies back in the day so I am crossing my fingers as well.

i'm really currious about this game, but i have to admit i'm really not an MMO person. i think i've become more of a 'casual hardcore' gamer as i've gotten older. love all the 'hardcore' games but don't have time to play a lot anymore. that makes MMO games a total waste for someone like me thanks to the subscription fees. shame.

Former SWG player here too. Azhar and Riyadh from the Starsider galaxy.

I'm really looking forward to this game. BioWare's slow trickling of newsletter is making me antsy!

hopefully it's not just NWN2 rebadged.

I believe the two original devs of SWG are helping with this game. Didn't Vogol and Koster quit SOE because Smedley refused to listen to them and their fan base when he pushed CU and NGE down our throats?

Guild Wars, bro.

If they pulled it off, I might just have to start paying for an MMO.. Subscriptions have always kept me away (tried Guild Wars), but if it was seriously well made, I might give it a try. Btw, there's a beta around there somewhere for it, but you have to sign up for it and hope you get picked...

It's Bioware. They don't have the ability to make a bad game.

I agree bioware makes some kickass games they also make some buggy games, either way the kickass part about MMO's is the [sarcasm]patches[/sarcasm].

I can't wait for this game too, I like BioWare games alot.

I do hope this turns out to be a good game. I think one of the things that WoW has done is really push people's expectations of what an MMO should be right from the start. In the past, people were used to MMOs being somewhat half-finished, with much of the "end-game" material being added after release (heck I remember Dark Age of Camelot didn't even have it's higher level dungeons itemized with loot for a couple of months). At that time, it kind of made sense because the game's release would bring in extra bucks to fund that further development. These days, however, people are impatient and seem to binge even harder right after they pick up the game. If they detect a lack of polish, people start bailing after a month or two. There were some issues and complaints with WoW when it first launched, but they seemed to have largely gotten the game to the "satisfaction point" as far as much of the end game content.

So... lots of money doesn't necessarily mean something is a good game, but given people's current expectations as far as polish and content, I think it's almost required anymore. Far too many MMOs have floundered because the money supply was drying up and they shipped the game about 6 months before it was ready.

Boy o boy this sure looks a lot like SWG. I mean the graphics look the same from those shots.
I played SWG for years on Radiant and Shadowfire. I would love to see something come along that could compare, crafting is key for me to come back to it.

While I totally hated the KOTOR series (and Bioware by extension for making such terrible games) I will be buying this one if only to show support for someone other then Activision after their whole IW debacle and Ubisoft for it's whole bullshit DRM fiasco.

I hope EA keeps there nose out of it, and lets BioWare release the game when there ready, not when some a$$ clown at EA want's it on store shelves, just to make them look good. i.e. Hellgate: London

Hell, I hope Lucas Art keeps their nose out of it. Julio Torres from LA and John Smedley from SOE destroyed SWG together.

it's star wars, it could suck ass but it will still make back their money. Star wars hasn't quite been as devastated as the star trek franchise.

i mean people still play galaxies....

it's bioware + star wars = money

i personally can't stand star wars and i am still interested in the execution side of it.
I don't care for bioware either and I still play their goddamn games because people don't shut up about them....

thank you

someone else who couldn't stand KOTOR.

though same deal here, EA has made a lot of progress from days of old (still not a good company, but better than their darkest days). I don't mind tossing them a few bucks here and there.

Even if I have to beg, borrow, or steal the monies..I will be getting this game. Bioware has never disappointed me, and I love almost anything Star Wars. KotoR was one of the first games I beat at least a dozen times, I just loved the plot. KotoR II was a big disappointment but Bioware didn't make that one.

Kotor II was bland and boring in comparison to the first one

Kotor II wasn't done by Bioware.

IMO, it was still a good game. The Peragus and Telos sections at the beginning were kinda boring, but I thought the plot/characters were great until you got to the end, certainly more interesting than the "collect all the star maps and kill the bad guy who's kinda like Darth Vader" plot in Kotor. The Kotor II team obviously ran out of time to properly develop the ending and the late game party interactions.

The weak ending just makes me want an actual sequel even more. Star Wars: The Old Republic is set ~300 years after the events of Kotor II.

Count me in the group of really hoping this turns out to be good. I simply can't convince myself that it is going to be anything other then another noob shit wow clone though.

I give the game about 1-2 months, then everyone will start leaving it.

Cause somehow dumping a lot of money into it, will equate to a super uber game.

I am so looking forward to this game I have started saving money towards system upgrade and first year's subscription costs. For me this will be my 2011 entertainment package.

I suppose you play as a Jedi instead of the some taxi driver no one gives a damn about. Such as Star Wars galaxies. that was a turd of an MMO. I think MMO's are pretty boring. I only play WoW occasionally becuase my friend pays for it and he practically begs me to play with hi, I'm mroe into first person shooters sucha s battlefield and RTS games. something where I can play several 20-40 minute matches. with fast paced action and I don;t have to play for weeks in order to do the fun stuff.

Bioware needs to take a long hard look at how Blizzard handles things
small stuff is what will make or break the MMO Starwars or not if it sucks im not going to be playing it

stuff like add-ons, AH, how quests are handled
5 10 and 25 man content etc

Sounds like you are looking for a WoW in a new setting. If that is all you are seeking than its likely any new game will disappoint you...with the exception being tired old rehashes of WoW.

Add-ons while a good idea in general, were given far too much power in WoW. Like them or not (I would honestly not play the game without several of them but that proves my point), it's true. The AH was far from groundbreaking and seriously, if you are impressed with WoW's content I dunno what to say to you. It had some interesting encounters that is true but so did a myriad of other games...without resorting to simply using the same instance and same mobs with diff stats. That is pretty much the opposite of creative dont ya' think? WoW managed to have horrible lore and was far too quick to go for a quasi witty one liner in place of interesting dialogue.

How exactly were quests handled well in WoW? You were told point blank what to do and where to go, if not by the quest dialogue itself than by addons. Where does that get fun or interesting? There were some interesting quests floating about but by and large they existed in the original content and not in the expansions.

I do not mean to shit on WoW, I understand TONS of people enjoy it, myself included for awhile, but I would not use it as any kind of measuring stick for new games unless one is making a children's MMO where everything is spoonfed to the player.

I tried not to read up on this Star Wars game, I find the quickest way to ruin a game is to visit the forums but I hope it's not another crappy theme park mmo with pretty graphics and shitty mechanics.

i play WoW becouse it got it right
it could of been any other setting but the way some parts of the game work i just cant live with out in a MMO now
the biggest one is interface mods and other add-ons
server setup and the why group content is done also should be models to follow
