Browser Makers Demand Screen Time

I honest to goodness feel bad for some of the guys at Microsoft, first they get done implementing a system for European Windows users to choose a default browser.

Then these guys start complaining that people may not want to scroll all the way to the right to chose their unheard of browser, I know there is a team of coders that's just pissed right now.

The final choice screen design leaves the vast majority of users unaware that there are more than five browsers to chose from.

Good job UK. Now either Windows will come with 17 gigs of crapware or they'll be paying for browsers like we did in the late 90s.

If ignorance of the law is no excuse why is ignorance of browser a problem?

really the only options you need are IE8 FF Chrome and Opera any thing else is ether a fork or Mozilla or Mosaic which is all IE8 is any way

I'm so SICK of this crap. MS seems to have gone out of their way at least lately to try and accomadate everyone, even taking the windows live stuff out of windows 7 and making it a download and putting up the ballot and people still aren't happy. What could they possibly do to make these people happy? They're going to either keep trying to please and lose at it or put their foot down and stick with the seemingly fair ballot model they have. Your average person doesn't know and doesn't give a crap and is going to be confused by some crazy ballot with unheard of browsers and they're used to IE. I do understand why they don't want IE to come with every computer and therefore have an edge but this is going a bit too far.

Going too far? It's only taking the idea and running with it! Windows is Microsoft's OS, they should have the right to put what they want on it.

If you're going to force them to add things, well you better be ready for stupid shit like this to occur. Hell, you better be ready for everyone who makes software to jump on board and windows will come with 17 gigs of crapware.

If I was Microsoft, I would have laughed and said shove it. The EU is rediculous with their judgements. Oh yeah, it's Europe.

Also have to remember Safari, if you want to include all of the heavy hitters. And all these have vast options.

Oh JEEZE...when will they fucking stop? I mean, seriously, tell these companies to create some sort of algorithm that makes more space fit on the screen than is physically possible so we can see their browsers, too.

Damned bunch of cry babies.

Microsoft might be evil, but it seems like they they just can't win here, there is literally nothing they can do that won't piss someone off.

They should have just stuck to the top 5 browsers ... are there even more than 5 browsers that people actually use?

Internet Explorer.
FireFox.
Opera.
Safari.
Chrome.
...

That's got to be 99.995% of browsers covered right there (and three of them are basically the same browser re-skinned :p).

Actually MS should of stated the following; "It is our operating system, we designed, developed it and paid to market it. We will whatever browser we damn well please in our own product and the EU can kindly fuck off".

UK? WTF has UK got todo with this FailRuling?
The only thing the UK has todo with this the citation is the BBC

This is what happens when they start making it "linux like", (communist ideals in the way of every little man is equal, and there are a million little men to choose from).

A billion "choices" and zero productivity until you wade through the lot. Then when you're done, a new build comes along and you have to waste your day shoe-horning it in.

I remember the days of people "selling" their own products instead of forcing rivals to advertise for them. If they had that much merit, people would be onto them anyway.

Plus I feel as most people in the real world do, I don't give a crap about what "brand" I'm viewing web pages through, I'm just viewing the internet. As long as I can scroll pages and use my mouse back button, I really don't give two shits. I mean really, what's it matter if the title bar says ie8 or opera? I'm looking at web pages, not jacking off over the browser and "identifying with it" like FF users do.

The petition is signed by the makers of the Avant, Flock, Maxthon, Slim, Sleipnir and Green browsers. The makers of the other browser on offer, K-Meleon, did not sign it.

Avant Browser
Avant Browser is a freeware web browser from a Chinese programmer named Anderson Che,

Flock
Flock is the successor to Round Two who raised money from Bessemer Venture Partners, Catamount Ventures, Shasta Ventures, and other angel investors. Bart Decrem and Geoffrey Arone cofounded the company.[3] Flock raised $15 million in a fourth round of funding led by Fidelity Ventures on May 22, 2008

As of 2006 Sleipnir had a 6.0% of the market share in Japan.[3] Fenrir has released its Global Site and arranged new pages for each location. Fenrir has released Sleipnir 3 alpha version with plans to release other language versions.

WTF do you get off blaming Britain for a mess between mainland Europe and America

Yea this was obviously going to happen. What makes the top 5 browsers more important than the top 50 or top 500? What about other software? Obviously, if people can't be assed to type " www.firefox.com " into their damned browser address bar they should just deal with using IE.

The first comma in the news post should be a period and the first period should be a comma.

I'm blaming Europe because they chose to make this law forcing Microsoft to include all competing browsers.

Nothing todo with britain tho. iirc no british judge,MEP or any actual british influence had anything to push this through

Actually MS should of stated the following; "It is our operating system, we designed, developed it and paid to market it. We will whatever browser we damn well please in our own product and the EU can kindly fuck off".

and the EU would say "thats fine. stay on top of the OS market in all other parts of the world. in EUROPE, you wont even be at 1% marketshare because we will outlaw you.

I would love to see them try. What are they going to do? Force all of Europe on to Linux/OSX? Don't make me laugh.

I get that already damnit! I already said EU instead of UK before! Stop replying about this shit, because I certainly won't explain that I made a mistake again.

I'd expect the european business sector to completely collapse before then.

/agree

Not sure what exactly it was that triggered all of this stupidity, but playing along is not making MS look any better.

Those other companies are welcome to make their own OS's and ship whatever-the-fuck-browser they want with it.

They all are, but all the courts seem to conveniently ignore that fact.

Wait for it - here comes the anti-competitive-law-don't-apply-to-xxxx junkies.

I almost think MS wants stupid crap like this too happen. Like they are waiting to say enough is enough go screw yourselves.

THAT or wait for the implosion (you note that stupid things like this only occur in the EU launched version, the bits that make sense get rolled out everywhere eg the networking ruling).

In a few more years when more and more of these ruling occur (either at MS or at other software houses that leverage windows) the amount of BS that would have been added or removed will start causing incompatibilities with the rest of the world

all MS have todo is "Well we did EXACTLY what you wanted, you didn't listen to us when we said it is core to the OS..."

so if they all are, did MS and all the other browser bitches jump on each of them and DEMAND that their browsers be added?

While I wouldn't wish this on the EU, it would be DAMN funny if it happened.

And then every citizen in Europe says, "Oh, damn, I guess it's Linux and Mac now. We sure love this idea. I can't wait to migrate my entire business to another platform too."

Please. MS could have the EU by the balls here, if the threat ever elevated to this level... But benefits more, yes, by playing fair.
