I have a desktop and a laptop, both running Windows 7. I set up a folder to share on the desktop. The permission is set to everyone with no password. On the laptop I can see the share folder but I cannot open it. It says "you do not have permission to access//computer name//folder name....". What is the problem? I checked the network sharing setting and everything is set up correctly. I also tried googling this problem but have not found a solution.

Do you have the same user accounts/passwords on both computers? If not, then that's your problem. Select 'Log in with different credentials' and use the correct user/password.

Neither of the 2 computers require an account to login. I did set the share permission to everyone. Shouldn't that let everyone join regardless of user account?

No. You have set the computers not to require a password to log in , but they're still using an account - you had to specify a username when windows was installed. If you only have one username, it's set to be an administrator and will log in automatically by default. Go to Computer Management->Local Users and Groups and you'll see djBon2112 is correct - set the accounts the same, use different credentials, or set the Administrator password to be the same on both computers and it should work.

Why aren't you using homeshare? Wouldn't that be the easier solution? That is, unless you have have non Win7 clients to share resources with.

What is homeshare?

I dont get why this is so complicated. I remember back in windows xp, I can just set the folder to share and all the computers on the network can access to it without any additional settings.

Homeshare is a built in self contained network sharing program that's built into Win7 home. As long as you have IP6 on, you just start homeshare on one PC, get the password, apply it to the other PC and badda boom, you're sharing all the resources you specify such as printers, folders, etc. I don't have Win7 all over my network, but if I did, I would definitely implement it that way.

I have it, I find it a lot easier than trying to setup a workgroup and get file and printer to work correctly. Actually stay connected for long periods of time too. I had windows 7 for about 2-3 months now. It works like a charm

Check the Turn off Password Protected Sharing setting:

Network and Sharing Center -> Choose Homegroup and Sharing Options -> Change Advanced Sharing Settings -> choose Turn Off Password Protected Sharing at the bottom.

Ok, I did the homegroup thing and it still has the same problem. I am able to see the shared folders but cannot open it. It still has the "do not have permission to access blah blah blah" error.

Were they copied from somewhere else? I know I had the same problem in XP because I copied information from one server to another and I had to right click on the files/folders and click the "unblock" button.

If homegroup isn't work either, then there's something more going on. Are both the NTFS and Sharing permissions on the share correct?
