I get to pick out a mouse for Christmas, and am trying to decide between the G500 and G9x.

I currently use a G5, but it's the old school one with only one thumb button. I do like it a lot.

I tried switching to a death adder, but switched back to the G5. I've never had a chance to use a G9 before, I was hoping some people with experience could weigh in and let me know if the G9x would be worth the extra $20-$30.

Thanks!

Depends on your grip a bit. Do you use a fingertip, palm, etc. grip?

The G500 comes with a few more buttons and is similar to the G5, along with having more dpi and better tracking of course. It also has the little hyper scroll toggle, where you can toggle between the clicky clicky scroll wheel type and the non-clicky version of it. It also has the "battleworn" design, if you're into that sorta thing (hence the greyness and different shades of grey in each bit of the mouse). A special thing about the G500 though is that it has the laser close to the fingertip, much further down you would have on many other mice. However, the logitech blog states that it's designed to be a palm mouse.

As for the G9 and its brother G9x, it really depends on if you like the particular shape of it as well. Sadly I don't know much about that one and only tried it a few times but didn't like it as it made me feel like I was holding a shoe the whole time. (just my personal opinion, really depends on preferences)

Yes, it does feel like you're gripping a shoe. It's not a comfortable mouse at all.

Very interesting, I think I palm my mouse.

It looks like amazon has some good deals on both right now!

I have both and really like both. The G9 doesn't conform to the shape of your hand, but it certainly doesn't bother me as bad as it does you guys. The accuracy and precision more than make up for any other shortcomings...it's a lot better than the G5 in that regard (at least in my hands).

G9 - low, flat, and compact like a Lotus
G500 - taller, larger, and rounded like a 350z

The G9 is a great mouse and I'm keeping mine for the time being, but if you're used to the G5 then the G500 is a safe bet. It feels just a little bit larger than the G5 to me.

Yeah but the OP says he palms his mouse. So I suppose a G500 would suit him better than a G9 (which is said to be comfortable for fingertip/claw grip users), strange thing is though as I mentioned before about the laser's position. It's near the fingertip but the shape of it and design is a palm mouse (it even has a pinkie ledge).

Oh just before you make your purchase OP, you should also be aware of this http://jdc.parodius.com/logitech/ with regards to Logitech mice. Now not everyone can hear that high pitched whine noise. For example, some people (like me) are able to hear the noise when the red light on a CRT TV is left open (or when a monitor isn't turned off). It also varies from one person to the other as to what extent they can hear the noise, some can hear it while it's in use or idle mode while others can hear it only when they get their ear close up to the laser. Heck as mentioned before, some don't even hear it at all. But in case you purchase a logitech mouse you should be ready for this so you don't come across an unpleasant surprise just in case you are sensitive to that sound. If it's possible you should demo it, but since you're ordering from Amazon I suppose that choice is out of the picture. It's not a big deal really, and you might not even notice it at all when your computer is on, but I just thought it was worth a mention just in case.

If you have a G5 already you are almost certainly a palm grip. Unless you have been using the 'wrong' type this whole time like a left-hander forced to write with his right hand. ;)

Fingertip/claw grip is pretty distinct. Literally, holding the mouse in your fingertips, palm arched above and not touching the mouse body.

^^ Good illustration. I just tried the claw grip on my mouse and man is it uncomfortable. The tendons in my hand and wrist began hurting after a very short time! I don't see how people play like that...but to each his own. I guess you could also call it the Cobra/Rattlesnake/serpent grip, cause it makes your fingers look like snake fangs lol.

That illustration also shows me why I ended up selling my Copperhead and Lachesis. I find the palm grip much more comfortable/natural and the side buttons on those mice were next to impossible to activate using a palm grip. They basically forced me into a semi-claw grip; a palm/claw hybrid that was just not very comfortable for me. Guess that's why the DeathAdder is really the first Razer mouse I've liked enough to keep, and why i tend to love Logitech mice. The side buttons are easily accessible when using the palm style grip.

Depends what mouse you use, and hand size. At work I have a crappy little Logitech Wheel, and I claw grip it. Cant palm grip it, its literally only 3/4 the length of my extended hand. Feels completely natural, in fact trying to palm it is uncomfortable.

And when gaming at home, I palm the G9x. Completely different feel.

I agree with the rest. It depends on what grip your comfortable with. Test them out at your local electronic store.

Thanks for the heads up, I actually can't hear the high pitched sounds you mentioned, however I know what sounds you're talking about, it blows my friends mind (mrsneis on here) that I can't hear them, since he can hear the easily.

Thanks for the image, I use a palm grip for sure! Claw looks painful to me.

I get to pick out a mouse for Christmas, and am trying to decide between the G500 and G9x.

In the end it all depends on which one feels more comfortable to use. I too was trying to decide between those two mice and I have had a Logitech MX500 for a number of years now and never had a complaint or an issue with it. I'm going with the G500. Also I have read that the G500's sensor is actually a slightly tweaked version of the G9x's sensor. I'm sticking to the form factor I've come to know. G500 it is :)

I love the feel of my G9 with the large grip. I have fairly big hands and they cramp when using the narrow G5 style mice. I would not invest in the G9x because I keep the DPI well below max on the G9 and cannot imagine anyone using more than G9 has.

Analyzing my grip further, I think I'm kinda between a palm and claw grip, there is some space between my hand and the mouse, its just not as intense as in the demo photo of the claw grip.

I just got a G500 recently. (Then the G9 had a 'surprise sale' for $2 less than the G500 sale price the week before.) I love the buttons. 3 thumb buttons is orgasmic for me. I can use the ingame chat on 1 in TF2, and Ventrilo on another, and w/e for the 3rd.

Only thing the G9 has I wish the G500 had is the multi colour LED feature. The red kinda clashes with my black/blue themed PC. (Especially beside a G15 blue LED keyboard.)

As others have said, it's a good move from the G5. Will feel natural, no learning curve. (Like me and my Razer Lachesis, which is sitting in it's box again.)

If you have a G9 theres no point in getting a 9x. Thats like trading in an '08 Civic for an '09.

DPI-wise it took a while to find the best settings for me. I use:
-max dpi (5700 with the firmware update)
-5 speed (6th notch) for windows and no 'enhance pointer precision'
-5 speed in Setpoint (equivalent of 5 speed in windows, no alteration of mouse input)
-1000hz usb polling
-no accel in Setpoint
-4 sens for Quake3/Quakelive.

That all combined gives a perfectly accurate feel for me, dont even have to aim really, just react. Though it may look like I have Parkinsons from all the twitching my hand does during play. ;)

Awesome article on the finer points of mice and input here, using the g9x as the example:

I recently got the G9x and im not quite sure im gunna keep it. I used to use the VX revolution and thought the upgrade would be better but im not sure it is :(

Unfortunately the features do not outweigh the comfort :(

Thanks for the link, that was a great article!

I hate you so much. I didn't notice the whine before but when I paused to listen, I heard it. Then I put my mouse to my ear to make sure that's what I was hearing; sure enough, that's what it is. Now I notice it all the time. :(

Luckily though I use circumaural, closed-back headphones, so when I have them on, I definitely can't hear it (among other things).

while it's a valid photo, in reality the difference between claw grip and palm grip isn't nearly that big, making the pictures lightly misleading. the guy in thep hoto just has a giant hand. the difference between claw and palm is that in a palm grip your palm actually touches the mouse. that's it. it's how you move it that is really different.

for a claw grip, your wrist parks in one spot, and you only move the mouse with your fingers. most likely you will have to up your sensitivity to actually mouse like this, unless you have the giant fingers of the man in the photo (this may be a good way to tell if you claw or palm - if your sensitivity is really high, you probably claw).

for a palm grip you move your wrist to move the mouse. finger position doesn't change. if your mouse sensitivity is rather low, you probably are a palmer.

as for the op, go for the g500. i actually know the guy who runs that site with the logitech complaints. if he's complaining about it, it's a legitimate problem. i've also had quite a few quality control issues with my logitech problems. still love my z-2300s, though.

if you like the G5 then get an mx518

cheaper, and better than any other mouse on the market :)

I got my G500 for free, just start a support ticket @ Logitech if your G5 is worn out and they'll replace it with a G500.

^^^^ omg the "claw man at work!!!!" lmao that's weird. I never seen that before in my life.

Just got a G500 in, after using an mx518 i love the mouse better than the g5 and it performs better, doesnt get stuck when whipping around at low sensitivity like the g5 used 2.

I've owned the G5, MX518 and the MS Sidewinder X8.. now use a G9X and it's better than all of them. Very precise and after a couple of days adjusting to the shape it's perfect. I could see how people with large hands could potentially struggle with it though.

1000

Hoping I get the G500 for Christmas. I love my G5 9(ev 1) but the pads are wearing down and more buttons would be nice.

Probably give it to my mom (I hate using hers when I visit lol)

I had a G500 got a loooong time, very long time. It was the best feeling mouse I'd ever used, and I'd kept up with all Logitech's corded flagship mice up until that point.

Everything after the G500 was awful, even their dumb G5 and G500 with only 1 thumb button. I saw pictures of the G9 when it first came out and balked. The Gray Brick, I called it.

Little while ago there was a great deal on Slickdeals, so I bit the bullet and tried a G9, thinking I'd be able to resell it at a profit because I knew I'd hate it.

Turns out it's the best mouse Logitech's ever made for me! Input device reviews are as subjective as movie reviews, but I am so disappointed I didn't get a G9 earlier! It feels great, it tracks great, and the buttons click great. Not every feature is for everyone--I tweaked the resolution settings, saved it to the mouse and uninstalled Logitech's software. I never change the speed now.

I don't fiddle with it, I don't switch grips and I don't change the scroll wheel's resistance. Once I got it set up, I left everything alone and it's just perfect!

I would urge you to jump on a bargain and give the G9/G9x a spin. It blows the doors off anything Razer makes, both in ergonomics and build quality, and it's by far the best gaming mouse Logitech has ever made.

me too. I think I use my forward fingers to pull the mouse back against my palm, but the part of my hand below my knuckles is elevated above the mouse.

I would go with the G9x if I were you - I've gotten to try a g500 and didn't really like it, mostly due to the bulky shape. Although I never liked the G5 either, so you might feel differently.

Claw is more accurate/precise for FPS games, so I use a G9. If you have ever observed someone who plays alot or table/air hockey, you will see them skip the traditional grip and 'claw' the edge of the paddle for similar speed and precision reasons (as well as allowing for a wicked slap shot).

I both claw and palm (I have a few mice, normally I use the MX revolution for internet, G9 for games). When my middle finger starts to get sore, then the OCZ NIA comes out! Almost have that thing calibrated perfectly otherwise I would just use it all the time. Even with the NIA though, I still use a mouse for some aiming.

I just switched from a G9 to the G500. I have big hands and the fuller size of the G500 fits me better. Also, I love that the scroll selector is now on top of the mouse instead of on the bottom. I no longer have to pick up the mouse and turn it over to switch between normal and hyper scroll.

I prefer the G9 precision grip since I use the claw style grip, but the wide load grip is fine for palming the mouse.

I find that the claw grip gives more control and precision in twitchy FPS games, since I move the whole mouse with my fingers and don't move my wrist much. The back of the mouse doesn't reach my palm either.

I wouldnt say large or small hands has so much to do with it even (unless its the MS x8 sidewinder... in which case if you have large hands its a sweet mouse, if not, it sucks). My pinkey to thumb spread is 11"... I cant even squeeze my hands into anything less than XL gloves and I can palm a basketball like an ogre....

and I prefer the G9.

Just goes to show... there are so many variables at play here... you just dont know unless you try them for yourself. Maybe ask a friend to use his for a bit or something. Or hell, just do like I do and buy em all.

Oh, hey... I know a solution that everyone will think feels great... did you know the OCZ NIA2 is close to being released?!?! After using my NIA, I think Ill be in line for the new one. There is a hack/dev community that has figured out all sorts of crazy things with this device... they use it as a lie detector, they mod the program so people can use it as a desktop mouse, etc... wicked stuff.

I had a g5 that broke after I rage slammed it one to many times, and switched to a g9. It's ok, but the only reason i keep it and don't get a g500 is that it cost to damn much. But I would trade it for a g500 in a heartbeat.

Got my G500. Scroll wheel is much nicer than G5. Buttons feel different but not necessarily better or worse than G5.

My only complaint is that it does not say 'G500' on the palm rest
