just installed 7 pro yesterday and im copying my backup files from my old computer (xp-pro-sp3) ot my new one and im transferring files through my wired network (modem to router and router to gigabit switch and all comp have gigabit ethernet ports) and im getting about 3-5MB/s file transfer speed.. any ideas how to speed it up?... the best i was able to get was 35MB/s for a few secs and then it goes to a mind numbing 5MB/s speed... ugh... files range from kbs to gbs.. any help would be great

ive tried:
* change LAN controller settings (Speed & Duplex, Flow control...)
* update LAN controller driver

nada

write cache is turned on, on the all the drives on my 7 pro rig... should i turn it off?

Mind if I ask how you're xfering the files? Over to a share?

im just copying files i saved in xp rig (movies, school stuff, pics) to my new 7 rig.. its all wired network that hooked up to a gigabit switch which is connected to the router.. so im doing a basic copy (xp rig) and paste (7 rig)

Sounds like you're at the limit of your disk's file transfer speeds ...

That must be some crappy disk!

On my gig network switch I get anywhere from 70 - 85 MB/s transfer speeds from any of my PC's to my WHS. Netgear G105 5 port switch using CAT5e cables.

I say you have an issue with the network setup of bad network cables etc...

go to control panel, programs and features, turn windows features on or off, disable remote differential comression. fixed.

this is a feature that has been enabled in newer OS's to use minimal network bandwidth while syncing data across multiple computers. only server 2k3 R2 and newer support it. but vista/win7 (and server 08/R2) still try to use it when communicating with XP.

What kind of files?

lots of small files = slow transfer cause the heads need to seek alot
larger files

run HDTach or HDTune and post the results.

Pretty much what I was thinking when I said at the limit. the 35Mbps is likely during a large file transfer, and the 5 during thousands of small. You could, in theory, zip or tar or otherwise turn the small files into something contiguous to help with transfer speed, but then you incur the cost of the time it takes to make the archive.
