I picked up a pair of these over the weekend and they finally arrived today. Needless to say I was shocked to see a box, 16x12x5 in size, both drives inside with NOTHING protecting them. I'm doubt it's even worth it to test them to see if they managed to survive the trip like that bouncing around inside the box and into each other. The ESD bags alone are dented and ripped to hell. Even if they managed to be operational now, there's no chance they'll last longer than a month.

So, I'm just curious now how many others received drives from Amazon if they happened to order them over the weekend. It seems like they ran out of their packing materials and thought it wasn't a big deal to ship them in this state.

Please be clear. They were just placed in the box, with NO other packing materials? Were the drives attached to eachother? Were there any peanuts, or paper?

if the box was really 'empty,' that's pretty exceptional...

The drives were in their ESD bags, that is it. There was no 'Air Bag' or packing peanuts, nothing. Just a huge empty space for the drives to bounce around in and off one another. Hard to believe I know but that's how they showed up.

Makes me wonder if they shipped so many drives and so many other items over the weekend they simply ran out of whatever packing material they typically use and said 'f it' and shipped them that way.

I suppose we'll find out if this is just a rare exception or the norm over the coming days.

Wow...I would be contacting Amazon and getting replacements ASAP. Who cares about testing them for functionality, they're ticking time bombs.

Its not like they where running when banged around, I bet they are fine.

That's Amazon for you. All the 2 TBs I've got from them (packed this way) are still running fine though.

There is no way I would even think about using these, NEVER. send them back ASAP.

Pretty pathetic, IMO. And there was a thread about great Amazon HDD packing..

4-5 months ago I got a pair of 1.5tb drives from Amazon and they came in a box with a foam insert for 2 drives, probably the best packed hard drives I've ever gotten. Go figure.

I also ordered a hard drive from Amazon about 8 months ago and it was packed very well. Inconsistencies...

I've ordered 4 Seagate 500GB drives from Amazon in the last month. Two about 3 weeks ago and two last week. All four came in their own seperate box with the drives supported on the ends by foam or plastic supports.

I actually built my whole sytem from parts bought through Amazon and they were all well packaged. The Antec case was sent in the orginal box, but I've got no issue with that. Everything else came as a box in a box with airpacks.

Was the item on amazon labeled as "Frustration-Free" packaging? It seems that the poorly packed amazon drives have had this label. It that's so, then it seems someone at Amazon thought that shipping drives without those "frustrating" foam and plastic clamshells would be a good idea.

If you bought it here:

then yes
Amazon Has Certified That This Packaging Is Frustration-Free
This item is delivered in an easy-to-open recyclable box and is free of plastic "clamshells" and wire ties. Learn more

I would send pictures to amazon's customer service advising them that this isn't proper packaging for hard drives.

Yeah, those are the ones I ordered and I had already contacted Amazon about it which they agreed to send out 2 new ones and contact their shipping department regarding the issue.

Now I just have to see what condition the next 2 drives arrive in.
