What does the viewer do? Its the icon between the calender and itunes icon I thinks.

I click it and nothing happens.... Is this what its suppose to do?

I'm a PC guy so help a Mac noob.

I'm also new to macs so I'm sure there is someone else much more qualified to answer this here.... but I believe it's like a preview program, so once you open something that gives a preview it will stay open in the dock until you close it

Do you mean Preview?

Preview is you image and PDF viewer. It does not open anything because you need to open a file.

you know, the Dock is dynamic, so many people here don't have the same icons you do.

A screenshot would be helpful. (command-shift-3 to take one and save it on the desktop)

it's like asking "what's that icon below 'my computer' on my desktop for?"

If you click and open it, the file menu at the top of the screen will change to allow you to open pictures and such. You just won't see a window till you actually open something.

ok... thanks. :)

And... since you are new to the Mac platform... Hitting spacebar on a file in Finder will allow for Quick-Look... meaning you don't actually have to open a new program to quickly glance at a document or picture. Very handy when curious what something is.

This is in at 10.5 and newer... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quick_Look

Also, if you use iTunes, subscribe to the Apple Quick Tips podcast. Open the iTunes Store by clicking the link in the left-hand pane, then just use the search bar in the upper right.

if you'll notice, when you click that, the app itself opens but it doesn't open any sort of file right off the bat.....the menu bar changes to the "Preview App"....
